You're so good sir! Glad I've found you, so great to see someone like you sharing this huge nolege, May I ask how many decades you've been playing?
@hersoveela
@hersoveela 3 года назад
I started with classical guitar lessons when I was 21 in 1972. That makes it almost 5 decades. But I was not a good student and really struggled with classical technique. Plus I had many periods of several years when I played nothing at all. That didn't help. Best advice is don't stop playing like I did. I started practicing again seriously in April 2020 after a very long break.

Thanks for this, Sal. Much appreciated :-) My hand has been too tense whilst playing and not allowing the wrist to take over.
@hersoveela

Happy to help! One thing I didn't mention in the video was that after each stroke of the triplet the hand is totally relaxed with no tension at all.

@@hersoveela Oh would you say this is easier or harder than the rhumba technique?
@hersoveela
@hersoveela 3 года назад
@@rambledogs2012 It's hard to compare one thing to another like that. Both of these techniques are as easy or hard as the amount of time you spend practicing them. The biggest factor is always practice slowly at first, taking care to relax the hand between each muscle movevent. It sounds boring but that is how I learned to develop any complex technique.

Sal I have two problems with this technique. The first is my thumbnail gets caught on the way down. Is it best to play with a short nail? The second is there's an accent on one hit. How do I remove the accent and make it sound more like a loop?
@hersoveela
@hersoveela 3 года назад
1 - I keep my thumb at a 30 degree angle to the strings. This is best for me to prevent hooking of the nail. This also allows the back of the wrist and forearm to be in a straight line. All this means the hand rotates at the wrist naturally when executing this rasgueado. Check to see if your thumbnail is not too long. That could be your problem. You need to find your compromise between having the nail long enough for playing strong thumb rest stroke, playing thumb strokes cleanly in arpeggios and normal free stroke,. and also long enough to execute this type of rasgueado. You need to experiment a bit. Maybe you need to turn your a bit inwards towards the strings to allow more nail on the strings. Also take a close look at where on the nail you are hooking. You may need to file the underside of the thumb nail in the spot. Keep the filed surface as smooth as possible with a fine buffing board. Always make small adjustments and try the result before making the next adjustment. The last thing you want is to take too much off. Then you will be cursing me. 2 - Getting an even sound without accent is easy. When practicing triplets. Practice counting in 4s or 2s. This way the accent falls on a different stroke each time. We are still talking about deliberate accents. But after a while you will notice the repeating heavy accent on the same stroke of the three strokes becomes lighter. This will help to make all your strokes even if that’s want you want. The will be times when you do want a regular accent in the same spot. This is something you need to consciously put in to the rasgueado. Practicing counting in different ways will give you the control to put accents anywhere you want. The same applies to practicing a 4 or 5 stroke continuous rasgueasdo. Practice these in 3’s for a more even sound.

@@hersoveela thanks for the advice, I have been trying this. Still not fully there, should I keep practicing it slowly everyday? Should I use a metronome? I find when I try to do it fast, the accent comes back
@hersoveela
@hersoveela 3 года назад
@@adamcrosbie6262 Yes. Practice slowly every day. Be patient. It takes time. How long depends on how accurate you are in the individual strokes. I know it sounds boring but I'm speaking from experience with my own development. I also watched other flamenco players I worked with develop this technique from scratch. We all knew the importance of patience and consistency. This was taught to us my players who were very advanced and we understood they were not born experts. They simply passed on the slow and accurate practice philosophy to us because that's how they learned and became so good. It will NOT happen overnight. But it will happen. Weeks and months go by when you think very little progress is being made. Trust me that behind the scenes in the muscle memory and in the brain you are definitely making progress. Use a metronome if it helps top keep time. The main thing this is relaxing between each stroke. As you play faster later this becomes automatic. Patience.
