As a disabled bloke, I am happy just to get out a take a few mundane images. Watching RU-vid video's like yours in not only inspirational but allows me to experience the places you go. Keep it up :-)
I feel like being disabled (I'm assuming wheelchair) you would be good at street photography. You could just set up in a location and wait on people to get framed corectly and do it pretty stealthily!
@@jr-wv4qw only issue is you’re very vulnerable in a wheelchair to being mugged for your equipment. I’ve known people to have phones and various tech stolen simply because you’re disabled and can’t give chase. Despicable but it happens.
plagued by anxiety that keeps me from traveling, I truly appreciate the mundanity of simple photography over high contrast, golden hour, mountainscapes.
It definitely works! I really like the first one you got. There's a very nice feeling of being drawn into the photo, which many abstract photos lack :)
Travel restrictions has messed up peoples travel plans up big time, so most people have had to adapt to whats local. Thank you for reminding us of what can be found with a little insight of what we can all do with little expence......
The picture you did not like, is my favorite. A lot of beautifull natural colors, and a rest for the eyes. It is a picture I would be proud to hang on my wall.
I think you might be right and things are shifting towards the more intimate style of photography. If it does it will be because of videos like this. I think it's a good thing myself. Epic landscapes are great, but most people can't go chasing off all over the country. And there is something rewarding about getting detail out of things up close.
Lovely as ever Thomas. Don't be too jealous of us over here in the states though. Every area I've been too here has its own unique challenges, my Appalachian mountains have a blanket of haze through spring and summer that never lifts, the entire eastern seaboard is a light show at night... and good lord.. the powerlines.... I have been in the middle of nowhere, civilization hours away with powerlines soaring overhead.
Be careful what you ask for when you say the beautiful summer eves in the U.S. Yes, there is a window and those nights are glorious, but 90 degree F with mosquitos in the evening makes me look longingly to the UK and Scandinavia quite often. Loved the triptych! Inspired me to look at the small things right at my feet.
Great video, especially for those of us who don’t live near epic landscapes. Loved your trifecta, it can really be anything. Flora, snails, worms, fauna... the key is to see it.
Lovely individual images but even better as a Triptych, just spent a week walking on Orkney’s beaches doing exactly the same, coloured rocks, patterns in sand etc so much beauty when you look closer 👍
The first in the series of your triptych images is definitely the best of the three and could stand alone. I especially like the balance between the lower left and upper right with the dividing S-curve. geat image.
Love the triptych! 👍 The call in the middle of your Squarespace promo was actually kind of funny. That's real life right there, people calling when it's a bad time, some pictures just not working but some things coming together beautifully. Thanks for putting these videos together for us!
I think you might be right about the shift , I just think we have drowned inthe standard epic travel shots, while I love them too , I just think more individual unique landscape gives us more to think about in terms of our own creativity. That pebble at 7.05 lovely, love the triptych
I love that kind of photography. I recently found myself shooting textures and shadows falling on the wooden planks of an old pedestrian bridge. I could spend all day doing stuff like that.
You're absolutely right about how the whole lockdown period has enabled those of us who would have normally ventured further afield from home to secure those grand vistas to look more deeply at our own local environment - in a different way, and certainly on a different scale. Each of the images in your triptych is lovely, but they work so well together. Really nice work.
Great to see you back! This tryptic is one of your best results for ages. No van talk; no talk of mountain meals; no general musing - just excellent photography and explanations. Thank you and welcome back.
I've found that this type of photography -more as a fine art creation- is a certain kind of meditation. You really get into the situation and flow with what that place gives you.
The second picture ... Shows all the skill experience and soul to Heaton photography . After seeing all those "epic" shots .. this shows more of a Heaton photography for me .
I often find that if the light is not good for the big wide open landscapes, I end up walking around looking for the interesting closeups with color and texture. They tend to be the hardest to compose and light properly. But it is the challenge of seeing something interesting, then getting that image that matches what you see in your mind. I love this video.
Great images and a good idea to intentionally set out for a set of three images. I really like the centre of the three, lovely contrast of colours and lines, gorgeous. Other two really good too.
I always try to include a bit of everything in my trips. To basically tell a complete story. Have an epic landscape shot / Sunset or sunrise. But also show Details / Macro that show the environment close up how I see it when I traverse it to get to the big shots. This way I can tell the complete story and the "journey" to the "big picture".
All your films are very interesting Thomas, but this one felt more inspiring about the art of achievable photography and using observation and composition to achieve a superb result. Its not all about, rugged outdoor trekking, camper vans and survival techniques! Those videos are very entertaining to watch, passively….this one was much more motivational to encourage experimentation and a call to try something… to experiment…Many thanks for a very useful nudge Thomas!
Did you not see a photograph in the limpets clinging to the rock as you took the picture if the pebble in the water? I was shouting at the screen "The limpets, the limpets". The neighbours probably think I've lost the plot, lol. Great episode again, Thomas.
I did, as it happens, but i couldn't quite make it work. The images just looked, well... like limpets on a rock. maybe some different light would have helped.
Stunning second image. Thanks for addressing the tendency of influencers to emphasize the inaccessible. It’s not a new phenomenon as anyone old enough to have read photography magazines will remember.
Love your video, as always. You inspired me to go up the mountain here in Cape Town yesterday, to take photos of the Protea flowers to make my first triptych!
I really liked this tale Thomas! And that location.. what marvel. A place to spend some evenings for sure. You made art in this video mate, really liked what you saw. I've almost exclusively gone down to my local coastline these past months working on my new exhibition with photography similar to what you did in this video. So this really hit home! I've also toyed with the idea of a triptych (although I learned a new word today..) and made an entire triptych video couple of weeks back :) it was a confusing editing job, haha. Thanks for posting videos and keeping it honest as always, take care!
Nice change from the mountains. The first photo of the yellow rock, and perhaps all the photos, might improve with a bucket of water thrown over the rocks to deepen their colors. So, checklist for photographing the beach; camera, tripod, backpack, pail and shovel. The triptych is a nice touch and develops a theme to the photos.
For me, center image stands alone, since it is very grey. I could see this printed very large! For the tryptic maybe convert them to B&W and they would go together nicely based on shape, tone and texture. Nice relaxing day at the beach.
Loving this vid. Very inspirational. As usual I particularly like the slant that it's not all about the photography but also about getting out there and just 'being'.
Very nicely done. 2nd video Im seeing on Triptych photography and I must say, fantastic job! I love the idea of triptych photography. It ads more to your story ❤
I recently stumbled across your channel and video's. I've not really shot much in recent year's, however watching you ramble about and talk about what your doing the enthusiasm really does come through and make me go. That's the sort of evenings I want to have. Think I may grab my camera and go on a jolly this evening 💪📸
I never find nice orange stones like that, I think you must have nicked them all! ;) The triptych looks great... It's true what you say about America and sunny climates, but often the skies are a bit boring, here in the UK, however, you can get some pretty epic skies if you are willing to deal with the cold and damp world we live in, when it delivers, it really does deliver.
Tom good video. I do this all the time and always come home with something. I too live in flat, no water land. The great Midwest of the states. It takes work to make something from nothing but that is what artist do. Love shooting here in Ohio.
watching your journeys to scenic places is really therapeutic! As a city dweller, in a country that isn't blessed with such vast places of nature, what you deem as boring is very interesting to me. It's all about perspective, the grass is always greener on the other side Thomas! Keep up the honest videos :)
Thanks for the video this week. I get value from seeing the scenery (we are still in lockdown here), and just to see you find beauty in the details, makes me excited to go out and look for the details in life
Thanks Tom I really liked the Triptych. You gave me some good ideas to shoot down at our beach. Our beach isn't as interesting as yours but at least the weather is usually nice in the summer. I always look forward to your videos and find myself saying to myself "he should be posting soon". Keep up the good work.
