These are back in stock in the UK.... Mine arrived from FFX this morning SUNDAY... Boy, this is so much better quality than the other cheaper ones on the market. The fence is sturdy and all the adjustment parts are cast aluminium. The beds are sturdy and thick, not like the crappy thickness planners. Easy to set up thanks to this video. I just need to find some space in the workshop now. Thanks John

Hi John, Another great review. I'm not looking for a planer, as I have one waiting for me at a friends once we can travel again. Nice work John, I was on my way to Yandles to pick up my pre-ordered TPT125 thicknesser and watched this in the car park before I went. I went with your recommendation and gut instinct there and then and asked the guys to reserve me one of these too. (Don't tell the missus). About to start assembly today and your guide is great - thanks for that. I particularly like the way you've broken down your vid into chapters which I can see by hovering over the timebar - excellent idea. My only reservation is a design one based on what I've seen elsewhere : the handles. Assuming the tables are co-planar then lifting the machine by the table ends MAY lead to mis-alignment longer term. So on that basis I'll be fixing mine to a base board and maybe fit the handles to that instead, not the table ends. Otherwise, thanks for giving us all the benefit of your experience and time to educate us all - Cheers.

i bought the tpt125 ignorant to the fact that it doesnt create a flat surface lol. i did how ever make a jig and this worked but it meant screwing into my choice of wood piece every time and was annoying so i decided to keep the thicknesser because i later found out that once you run a piece of wood overe the surface planer, you could then have a solid reference for passing it through the thicknesser. they have a duo relaitonship. like i said...i was ignorant and didnt listen and check ahhaha. u live n learn. hows your surface planer these days? still using it? any faults happened?

Hi John bought one of these beauties and had it delivered yesterday from Yandles I wish I had have seen this video yesterday the set up was terrible couldn't understand the instructions at all. Had to phone up Yandles in the end after scratching my head for nearly an hour. Spoke to Sam and he put me right I didn't realise the damn bolts I was looking for was on the fence. Love the soft start on it and you were right it all came out of the pretty much set up. It a cracking machine and the push pads are brill, nice cut as well. The only thing I noticed was the square bolt I've put it in the other way and that way you can alter angle to get a true 90 degrees. Spoke to Sam this morning to order something else and he told me about your video, brill by the way. Will keep my eyes open for other vids of yours Thanks Terry
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 3 года назад
Hi Terry. Thank you for telling me. Great to hear that Yandles set you right. It certainly could do with better setup instructions! I do hope that my video will be of some assistance to people in the future to help with this. I did the same thing with the bolts, didn't realise they were on the fence lol. Yes the soft start is good. I should have mentioned that in the video. You made me think about that square bolt again and I think you are right. The fixed end is meant for the 90degrees but it cant be adjusted. The other end allows you to specify your own repeatable angle. I hadn't realised this at the time but that makes sense. so if you do want to adjust from the stock 90, or if over time it stops being true, then you do need to use the other end. So maybe I was right the first time lol. Thanks for watching!

Hello Thank you for the video and I bought one upon your recommendation. I bought it from Yandles. Not sure if this was a brand new machine, but I am pleased with it. On starting the machine it made an unusual and unexpexted noise which was quite disturbing. I think that some packing material had entered the drum box but all seems OK now. I have noticed that it does become warm during operation. It's not too noisy but, as you say, ear defenders are highly advised, Thanks again.. Frederick

@JohnClothier 3 года назад
Hi! I am glad that you are happy with your purchase. It is possible some packing material got in there. Maybe worth speaking to Yandles about it just in case. I'll look out for the heat. I only did a couple of test pieces so I didnt notice the heat but as I say I will look out for it. Yes not a quiet machine but not overly noisy either. maybe one best left for a mid day use rather than early in the morning or later at night. Thanks for watching

Hi John, as before, thank you for a fantastically helpful video. I think I've just spotted what happened with the inner 45degree fence test at 13:27; you positioned and tightened the fence on top of the red blade drum guard, which should be behind the fence for this cut. The red guard locates on the magnets in the back of the fence. Would be interested to know the out-of-the-box score with a re-test - hopefully we'll do better than 49deg! ;) If not, I've got some e-mails to write - ha!

Hi John, A very clear and useful video once again. Thank you for sharing. Is the table made from cast aluminium? The only down side for me, and my neighbours, would be the considerable noise. It would be great if Triton could offer an option to put in a radial cutter. This would help with the noise and even better surface finish. A great video and I hope you get a lot value out of this planer.

@JohnClothier 3 года назад
Hi Daniel. Thank you! I will need to check on the table. I will let you know later. As for the noise, while it is certainly noisy I dont think it is that much noisier than using a router. I was a wood machinist for many years and can tell you the outfeed table should be set so as it's level with the top of the blades in the cutter block, not level with the infeed table. The infeed table height just defines the depth of cut. Have a look here, the picture in it shows what I mean... www.woodcraft.com/blog_entries/jointer-fundamentals#

@@alankirby2931 Thanks Alan. The reason i asked is that i've just restored a Kity planer/thicknesser and previously restored a Coronet planer, so have watched lots of videos on setting the blades and tables. I found plenty of videos on how to set the blades if the tables are already set, but not much about how to set a planer up when nothing is set right. So your advice and article are most useful thanks. The reason i asked John is because the other thing i found is that some planers are easy(ish) to set up and others are trial (by ordeal) and error. if I decide to get a non vintage planer its something i would take into consideration. Hi John, purchased this model from handles prior to your great setup/review video. It was a true godsend and helped me enormously with the assembly and setup. The manual was very binable! Just one small query? I found one very short grub screw about a 6mm in the bottom of box. I’ve looked everywhere for it and only found two holes with nothing in and a thread on the back of the vertical fence housing assembly (not fence) below the round rubber knob on either side. The thread is a match but there is only one screw. Can you tell me if these exist on your machine? If so what is there purpose? Cheers for a great review and well done!
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 3 года назад
Hey. Glad you found the video useful. It certainly took some working out. No sorry I’m not sure what that screw might be. My thoughts are it is for the fence alignment.
@chrissammels5444
@chrissammels5444 3 года назад
I had exactly the same screw, loose in the box. I am confident that it goes in the position you describe. There is already one screw in the casting below the sprung loaded ball shaped knob. This loose screw goes in to oppose and pair up with the already fitted screw. When both screws are fitted, it allows for a balanced, centred, slightly loose clamping force to the aperture for the square sliding bolt. Essentially, it just stiffens and squares everything up in that part of the fence assembly. Why it is not factory fitted is puzzling, especially as it is not shown in the assembly instructions. My imagined explanation is that the person who is supposed to complete this sub assembly, has insufficient time on the conveyor belt, so the order goes out to throw the screw into the product box instead. On the upside, unlike the video, the square sliding bolt was already assembled in my box, so I didn’t have to work out which way it slid in. Fascinating to think that a factory operative on the other side of the world can engage us in such trivia, by their minor discrepancy. To add a bit more trivia, I will tell my planer story. Many years ago, I had an Elu planer/thicknesser. It was excellent, but I had to sell it because it was too big and not practically portable. I subsequently bought a Triton bench top thicknesser and have waited untill now for Triton to produce an affordable and acceptable quality planer/jointer. I now feel complete again in terms of compact, portable machine planing capability.

My experience with this machine wasn't great, it broke frequently and while i have nothing but good to say about their customer support (very fast shipment of replacement parts or entire machine with no shipping cost) i would rather have a working machine. The fence setting mechanism is very well thought out, one of the best i have seen. Don't grab the infeed table or its handle, its prone to getting damaged. I got rid of the blade guard on the first day, its annoying as hell, has its upsides but i now have a bigger unit with american-style blade guard and its a night and day difference. When they replaced the whole unit i just sold it on the next day. Save up more money and buy a serious machine.

@@JohnClothier no worries. I've messaged Triton hoping they can do something. It seems there's an ever so slight bump in the infeed table. Putting a level across it I can rock on each end slightly. With the infeed table dipping down the most nearest me and the blade. Which produces angled planed wood and not squared.

Hey. I’m glad you found the review useful. Yes they are right with the size. However it is a little misleading. If you out it in a box that is how big it would be. This is because the fence mount sticks out the back a fair way and the blade guard sticks out the front. Putting it up against a wall you will need 510mm. Hope that helps.

If the companies developing those machines spent just a little bit more money they could easily up the capabilities and size of the machine. There is a massive market in the middle of people wanting machines that can be used in their small workshop.

@@JohnClothier So, the store said blades are NOT resharpenable. You can potentially resharpen them once, but they have holes in them and won't be adjustable. Unfortunate...
@JohnClothier

@ oh ok. Thanks. I presume they sell replacement ones though
@Tritonwoodwork
@Tritonwoodwork 3 года назад
@ Hi Mārtiņš, all Triton Planer blades are reversible, so once they've had their share of use you can swap them around and get twice the life out of them. It is possible to re-sharpen the blades (the blade holes are locating pins for alignment), but we would thoroughly recommend having this done professionally. Also, as John has said, replacement blades are available for purchase. Hope this helps!

No probs. This is a jointer. That is it’s main feature. That is what I will be using it for. I use a home made drum sander as a thicknesser.

@@JohnClothier 😆 I've just ordered this unit - I trust I've made a good choice... I had the Triton Thicknesser & unfortunately, I had to return it due to spiking at start-up tripping switches.
