Gravis UltraSound and Crystal Dream II demos by Triton. Everybody else seems to have used DOSBox, resulting in lower sound quality and rendering glitches... So I have recorded these on proper hardware, A real Gravis UltraSound, a real Pentium MMX and a real S3 VESA card. Enjoy these demos, Feel free to request other demos, if I can find them I might just record them and put them on the internet - I can now record from almost any IBM Compatible PC.

I loved the Gravis Ultrasound and watched Crystal Dream 2 countless times using it, was quite an upgrade from my Sound Blaster 2 which if I recall correctly was only capable of mono sound output. I also remember being amazed at how midi files sounded compared to the old card.

Yep, the SB 2.0 is mono only, I use one of those in a low profile 486. The SB Pro was the stereo card until the SB16 came along. The GUS has since moved to a different machine, one which isn't completely operational yet.

After almost a quarter century this one still holds up... the music... the bombast... the bar it set for all prods after it. And a great cap to boot.

One of the real classics of the MS-DOS demoscene for me. Rocks both in design and execution. Love the sharp and smooth sound of the original GUS. This was bundled with the Gus Max CD, will always remember this. Nothing quite beat the GUS in it's clarity and tone of sound.

GUS was incredible for the price. Installed it alongside a SB on day one no regrets.

I had a GUSMax sound card with 1MB onboard RAM. Not 512KB, 1MB! I was king in 1995.

The color bar was made by the box (Konig VGA-Scart) which converted VGA into S-Video for capturing, it was meant to appear whenever there was no signal from the computer but most of the time it didn't - this was rather irksome as it would have been useful for setting the capture card up but I recently switched to using a DVI setup instead so it doesn't matter anymore and there are programs (like PCCheck) that I use for color bars if I need them.

these pc demos are full of musics made with Amiga ST-00 samples, true oldskool ;)

For the most part it's a PCM Card, it has what one would consider a wavetable synthesizer for which custom patches can be loaded, due to the nature of it's inner workings it means that all the work is done by the card as opposed to the CPU (SoundBlasters rely on the CPU) and it is very useful for playing Module files which is what these and most other demos used at that time.

@HaloSpartanG13 This system does beep, but as I said, it can only use the internal buzzer to do so, the only way to record the beep from this system would be to use a microphone, this would sound bad and wasn't important enough to do as it isn't part of the demo - which is the point of the video. Another system I use for similar recordings uses an AWE 64 and has a cable I made allowing the beeps to output via the Line-Out.

Wow, some of these are really impressive (magic cube, vector slime), especially that those were made for a system where not only shaders were unavailable, but everything had to be rendered on the CPU.

@1337Shockwav3 Before this I had used Composite Out, but those newer graphics cards caused rendering problems with these demos (apparent in other recordings on here). I use a Konig VGA to RGB/Scart converter that cost around £50 on eBay - it works out cheaper than finding cards with TV-Out for each machine. I then hook it up to a TV-Capture card in my main workstation to record it. Stereo Covox eh? That could be interesting.

It was similar to the Sony SPC700 card in the SNES but bigger RAM, more channels and no ADPCM.

I also recall Triton being upset with Gravis for releasing that demo (the UltraSound demo, not Crystal Dream 2) before it was finished, claiming it hurt both of their reputations.

I've never used an Ultrasound. Was it a PCM card with a wavetable synthesizer, a PCM card capable of custom samples or a hybrid? I have a soundfont of all the GM sounds in the Ultrasound and I'm more than impressed with it.

@HighTreason610 13 лет назад
@HaloSpartanG13 What do you mean I forgot it? The system uses the internal buzzer to beep, the Gravis UltraSound does not have a connector for this and nor does the motherboard have one - being an old OEM system the buzzer is soldered to the board. It actually irritates me, because if I want to record something that uses the buzzer, I have to use another computer.

Hi, do you still have a demo CD (GUS MAX) with mod tracks, in particular - Movie it?
@HighTreason610

Don't remember ever having such a CD. Not being particularly interested in tracker music, beyond the occasional 'hey, that sounds cool' one, I'm afraid I can't think of anything to suggest that might help you track it down.

@timepope Hehe, I have a 486 DX-33, it's built entirely out of garbage parts, love that machine. Darn right the Gravis was the king, in some ways I still think it is, given that most cards seem to have gone back to using the CPU as opposed to doing the work themselves. As for SBPro being a p.o.s, hell yeah, and many programs made for that thing would not work properly with later cards, most of Creative's gear sucked. Funny thing is SBOS (for the GUS) is often better than an actual SoundBlaster.

How'd you record those? Use a PC with composite out? Already thought about recording this demo using a stereo covox (!) which actually sounds great as well and this being one of the few demos which support it ... but then again I currently just have a way to record sound.

I had a Sound Blaster 16, and I wondered for many years, how a GUS card would sound in my favorite MS-DOS gmes etc.. Until I got Dosbox working, and configured a GUS card.. It sounds just like module files, (mod, s3m, xm). I remember the Sound Blaster needing extra CPU power to play them. sometimes you had to reduce the samples quality in the game setup. :)

ultrasound quality really amazing, sounds like wav file quality if there can compare what the music part difference between ultrasound and sound blaster or adlib then it will be great!

As usual coding and music (especially the music!) is very cool. There is no GFX whatsoever, which is typical of PC demos at that stage. Better to have no GFX than lame GFX on the other hand. I have always liked this demo very much.

Going by the age of the video and the test card at the start, probably a VGA-Scart box with an S-Video output connected to an old analog capture card. In fact I think this was one of the first, if not the first, which was recorded this way. I would like to re-record it some day with better hardware as it is much easier to do now and better hardware is available allowing for at least 60fps captures. I miss uploading these demos and hope to get back to it eventually, things keep stopping me getting my new GUS rig off the ground though. Probably in a few months I will have it finished as the machine used back when this was recorded gave up a long time ago. Prior to these recordings either a video card's TV OUT was used or else some very old, very odd hardware I don't have anymore. At present I use a Gefen scaler and an Intensity Pro, but this should also change soon as it is getting long in the tooth and better solutions exist now. I think Spirit was the first demo I recorded with the current setup.
@Nico93

if your really gonna rerecord these someday, how about in 60 frames so we can see how smooth it is?
@HighTreason610
@HighTreason610 8 лет назад
As I said, that's the plan. Ideally I'd be able to do 70fps but RU-vid doesn't support this - see my recording of Xaos. One reason I haven't pushed so hard to record more yet is because I want the best hardware I can get so the demos can be shown in the highest quality possible.
