I spoke with Dave (Daves DIY: ru-vid.com/show-UCJu7ygS7J9DP3kvzU7Gd8Ug) and he found the correct torque setting for the riser bolts: 38Nm. I've tightened the bolts as much as I dare and now the bars are much more rigid. Thanks Dave!

I have a 2016 Chief dark horse and a 2013 Road King classic. Now I definitely want one of the Triumph speedmasters, gorgeous bike. First Triumph I've ever seriously found irresistible.

Afternoon Chris - if you do get a Speedmaster, you'll certainly not be disappointed. I tried a 2014 Cheif(tan, I think), but it felt much bigger than a Street Glide, somehow: I didn't really get on with it, although it was clearly a great bike. If you live in Britain (or even Europe), you'll love how the Speedmaster can filter between the lanes - the handling is on another level, compared to the heavier Harleys & Indians. Cheers, Chris

You can use the long risers in combination with Triumphs own Bonneville-line Bars. Plus there is even a 1inch extension for the risers available. On my Bobber I had a 1inch extension for the riseres, the Pullach risers from motone in comb with the Boneville-Bars, rerouted the cables and had a new upper brakehose made

Afternoon Flirt - I too had the Motone risers, with some Rox 4" extensions. Worked okay, though still not quite far back enough, but they were very unstable. I think that custom risers are the only long-term answer for me. (Sadly, as that's expensive!) Cheers, Chris

Greetings, I just couldn't get comfortable with the beach bars that come from the factory. I bought the Motone risers and they were an easy install and used original cables, wires and brake lines. The Motone risers lifted the bars and moved them back making the beach bars at least tolerable for me but I was not yet content. I was going to swap out the beach bars with some old Harley bars I had lying around but a quick check indicated a no go as the triumph hand grips and bar switches require a significantly longer straight section than the Harley bars have. So I just went with the triumph hi-rise bars (mini-ape style) and the extension kit for brake lines, wires and cables. I was a bit nervous about the brake lines but it all went very well and I was able to bleed the brake lines with no issue (have solid front brakes like factory, rear brake still sucks). Now I didn't like the position that resulted from how the triumph high bars were pinned. I took a chance and kept the Motone risers and installed the Triumph bars. My memory is a bit vague and bike is away for winter but I believe I may have hand made some brass shims from some sheet brass I had on hand. The upshot is that my high bars are solid, no wobble or slip and I didn't have to deal with the bar position that pinning the bars would have required. I now find the ride comfortable and use the MadStad wind screen.

Afternoon Miner - you've done well with the bars, and fitting them as the dealer said the extended electrical cables were a real pain to fit. I also tried the Motone risers with the high bars but didn't get on with them, so I sold the risers. (I use the Triumph screen as I wanted a larger screen.) Cheers, Chris

The best bars for the speedmaster are the bobbers handlebars with aftermarket 3.5 to 5 inch risers with a 2 inch pullback. Thats the hot setup. You are shopping the boutique aftermarket outlets, they are scalping you. You dont need the longer cables

Hi again Tom - lots of people are really keen on the Bobber bars, but I can't manage them (back hurts). I need the upright-ness. Ths means I need the full 5" or 6" of pullback, if I can get it. (I had 13" of pullback on my Sportster.) If I can get the pullback sorted, I'd go back to the Triumph beach bars as they are so nice. But, alas... Cheers, Chris

On my 22 Speedmaster, I do like the standard beach bars , but what I did was angled the bar up a few inches, so that the grips are parallel with the horizon instead of angled downward, it looks great and I didn’t have to change cables , my arms are more straight out,, And I have the Dart Marlin Fly screen, looks perfect and is to me more comfortable, I too like how your new Apes look , especially how you got them angled inline to the forks , 👍🏼

Morning Michael - thanks for the reply. I tried several orientations of the beach bars before I decided to change them and, for me, the risers & extensions were the most comfortable (and I liked the look too). But, alas, the wobble was excessive (or dangerous, according to the local dealer), so I felt compelled to use the high bars. Like you with the angle change of the beach bars, my arms are now straighter - and higher, obviously. Ideally, I'd have preferred to stay with the beach bars, but there you go... Angling these high bars more inline with the forks does improve the high bar look, I think. But it's all about comfort for me so I guess I just lucked-out with that one! Cheers, Chris

My experience with any kind of rubber mounted bars, a little movement is quite normal , only a rigid mount bar would be completely tight and no movement. I think if I had the risers with the locating pins, I think i would elongate the hole in the handlebar to allow some adjustability. I love those tall bars on your speed master, i want to put a set on my T-120 -2022 model but no one seems to know whether they would fit or not. Thankyou for your experimenting gives other riders ideas whether some parts would work or not.

Morning Beagles - I've managed to keep the bars stable by... over-tightening the bolts. Not very clever, but it works. 🤨 I was coming from a Sportster (solid mount bars) so got used to that. It's okay now, but I would prefer solid mounts - as long as the engine vibrations were minimal. Cheers, Chris

Great video well said. I have a 2018 Speedmaster .Before that 2001 Heritage softail with factory bars and pull back risers. Loved it. Im 64 I love my speedmaster low stance .Right now battling to rather keep beach bars and just rotate them up just a smidge, are bye the motion pull back risers are the tall bars like yours.Its pretty expensive to experiment if you dont like it. I guess I will keep my beach bars for now they are so close to perfect probably not a good idea to mess around changing plus I like being able to push it around with little effort where as you are correct the tall bars changes the weight on the bike. Thanks for the video.

Afternoon Levi - thank you for being appreicative! I found that the beach bars do have a little adjustability, which helped me a good deal. If they're 'close to perfect' for you, I'd stick with them because even though the high bars are better for me, they're certainly not perfect. I was with a gent in the week who was also wrestling with the handle bar issue. In the end, he rode from Exeter to the IoM for the TT on his Speedmaster, and was pretty much okay. He decided to keep the beach bars - he's 72. One day, I'd like to get custom 6.5" (160mm) risers to pull the bars back. I miss the beach bars so much, but very long pull-back risers would be wonderful. One day! Cheers, Chris

I have the 2008 Triumph America and the only thing I changed apart from an EFI tune Upgrade I changed the shocks front & rear as the standard shocks were way to stiff and hard. So I changed them to progressive front & rear springs and new adjustable dampers. It's so smooth now I can throw it around into corners like it's a racing bike it now feels like it's running on rails.

There’s an American chap on RU-vid who fitted the TC bothers 8” mini apes. They looked pretty good, and he didn’t need extended cables. Another alternative is the bars from the Triumph Scrambler XC. They have slightly higher rise than those from the T120 and of course, all the controls fit properly.
@chrisoftheot6272
@chrisoftheot6272 Год назад
Morning Richard - many thanks for replying. I think the chap you're referring to might be Daves DIY. If so, this is his video of fitting the mini apes on his Speedmaster: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u3Xa1rdDmJE.html. I watched it with interest when I was looking into the handlebar change. You're right about the cables, he re-routed the standard lines, pulling them inside the yoke assembly. I didn't much like that idea, if only 'cos Triumph don't route the cables like that normally. (Does any manufacturer?) Also, the pin - or the 'master cylinder locating lug' - means that the bars have to be drilled, or the lug has to be filed off. Either way, it's not the way I wanted to go. I'll have to check out the XC bars though. I wasn't sure if standard Bonneville bars would fit, and I didn't even think of Scrambler bars: good spot Richard! Cheers mate, Chris

@chrisoftheot6272
@chrisoftheot6272 6 месяцев назад
I've looked into the Royal Enfield options, but they're no better than the Triumph ones. First, the TEC Bike Parts 'kit': www.tecbikeparts.com/product/interceptor-650-30mm-bar-riser-kit/ It's cheaper at £28, but all you get are two bolts, washers and spacers. Not so cheap then! They only raise the bars 30mm too - no pull-back at all. Second, Voigt Moto Technik: voigt-mt.de/Handlebar-riser-with-offset-for-Royal-Enfield-Interceptor-650-18 Much more expensive at €70, but much more substantial. They include two top clamp replacements which move the bars up 30mm and back 21mm. I don't want any rise, and 21mm is nowhere near what I'm after. The idea is good, I imagine more pull-back is managable with minimul redesign. Lastly, an Indian company Indimotorad: indimotard.com/product/royal-enfield-650-interceptor-handlebar-risers/ They cost ₹ 6,690.00 (about £65) and are quite solid looking. They raise the bars 2", and offer about 1" pull-back, which is not what I'm after. They also retain the stock rubbers, like the Voigt items, above. So no help there, alas. I'm back to getting them custom made... one day. Cheers, Chris

@@chrisoftheot6272I think they look fantastic. I’ll be getting a SM at some point and will be changing to apes. OK....I am sorry, but I cannot fathom why the original bars are not more comfortable than those mini ape hanger monstrosities. Every (and I mean every) review I have seen of this beautiful bike says the bars and seating position is delightfully comfortable. Those ape hangers are going to mean rotator cuff surgery in the future. As subjective as looks can be, those apes are the ugliest thing you could do to a Speedmaster. Sorry, but that is my honest opinion.
@chrisoftheot6272
@chrisoftheot6272 5 месяцев назад
Morning Grasshoppa - I seem to remember that name from a while ago so, hello again. :-) As for comfort reviews, well my review does not rate the riding position as 'delightfully comfortable'. It's quite good, more or less, but the forward lean hurts my back with the (beautiful) beach bars, so definately not 'delightfully comfortable' for me. Still, I believe that your medical assesment of 'rotator cuff surgery' is somewhat alarmist! Like you, my 'subjectivity' leads me to much prefer the beach bars asthetically, but comfort is king for me so mini-apes it is. Thanks for commenting mate, Chris
