I couldn’t agree more about debunking the five speed theory. My scrambler has six and Jessica’s street twin has five. I absolutely love her 5 speed transmission. The engine is always happy and the gears are so wide and enjoyable. Plus that 900 engine is a peach, it truly has all the power a rider could ever need.
I have a 03 T100. It is what I love in a motorcycle. It's only 790 cc but you wouldn't know it unless someone told you. Speedo, tach, four dummy lights on the dash, single disc brakes, dual carbs. She rides like a dream, and I have no problem doing any speed I need out of her. Loved this video. Bonnevilles are a fantastic bike!
I've had a 2018 900 Street Scrambler for 4 years now. Been riding motorcycles since 1971. Probably the best, nicest and most economical 'bike I've owned. Thanks for cutting through the bulls**t and publishing an honest "real world" review 👍
Last year I picked up a used 2020 Bud Ekins edition. It’s a fun ride. Next month, to celebrate my 68th birthday, I’ll be riding in the Smoky Mountains with my Brother in Law.
I started riding motorcycles back in the late 60s when I was in high school. The Bonneville was considered to be a high quality expensive bike back then. I wanted one but I could only afford a used Honda 160 at the time. Here we are 50+ years later and although I never got around to buying a Bonneville, I sill love their retro classic looks.

My Man - you've summed up this bike perfectly. I ride a Kawasaki Z800, total opposite to the T100. I test rode one yesterday and couldn't stop smiling. I'm 60 years and logic is dictating I ride my remaining years on the 2017 I rode yesterday. And it's only done 2500km's. Thanks for your video, It came at a perfect time.
Bought my 2017 one when it was 6months old and it’s still my go to bike (I have 4). It does everything well and gives so much pleasure to own and ride. Did a 3000ml tour of Scotland no problem with all day (500ml) comfort. It’s a keeper!
I bought the new KLR650 for the exact same reasons. My commute is half of yours and all 40-50 MPH back roads. Perfect for my needs. Beautiful bike you have there. The T120 Black is really tugging on my heart strings.
I just pick up my brand new T100 today! Ive grown to love Triumphs and this bike fits me perfectly. Good review. (BTW, I gave up dirt biking this year 🙂)
I appreciate your words of wisdom on this bike and riding in general. I grew up riding a low cc street and trail bike which I loved just getting around on. Then my dad had a Suzuki GS850 which I got to drive when my mom was out of town. I haven't ridden in a long time but think this bike would be perfect for me to get back into something versatile. I don't care about going fast but I do want to ride on dirt roads. I've looked at dual sports, cafe bikes, scooters even, and I just love the retro bikes. Thanks.

I love the looks of it, but from your review, it sounds like it's got not just the form but also the fit and function. You mentioned that it is on the heavy side. That's one thing that concerns me as I keep thinking I need something lighter in weight. Regardless, I'm very impressed with this bike. Now, I'm off to watch your video riding this bike to Vegas!
It sure is a fun bike. I bought it to commute but it's been a hoot to ride. With the KTM waiting on parts it's been great having it in the garage. You'll have to give it a spin sometime.
I have an earlier carbed air cooled T100 I bought new. No one has ever worked on the bike but me. Day 1, I debaffled the pipes. Rejetted and went up one tooth on the front sprocket. I also gutted the airbox and put in a programmable ECU . I advance the timing curve 2 degrees. I put Hagon shocks on. I think its fast , if ridden well. Probably 70+ HP at the crank. My Fusion plug in hybrid can get 100 mpg. My Bonnie gets 40 mpg but makes me smile.It definitely goes over 100.
I used to ride "sport" bikes all the time, mainly a GSXS-750 and an MT-07 for commute. The second I swung my leg over a T120 I fell in love. But the T100 is my perfect motorcycle. Plenty of power for the street and tourqe rich! I love the 5 speed gearbox because it has long ratios and really let's you ride the gears. You get to feel the engine and hear the rumble more than banging gears. It sits just over 3500rpm running 70mph and with a 7500rpm limit its smooth sailing right at peak tourqe. It's a beautiful motorcycle that really feels good for the soul to ride.
You nailed it my friend....I bought my T100 new in 2020.....does everything I need.....has more power than I need. My speed range is upto about 65mph....at that speed in feels like the engine is having an easy time....well on top of the job at around 3200rpm. Its super smooth....sounds great....I'm in the UK....over hear we can remove the cat...I have....all win win....pleasant sound....not to loud...smoother at low RPM....and gets rid of the heavy engine braking on closing the throttle....used to feel like I have puts the brakes on. Now it got normal engine braking..... I gain a small amount oin gas mileage approx. 4mpg.....it prob has more power but I can measure it. I do wish the T100 have the fake carb bodies like the T120....unfortunately the dummy air filter covers dont help.....so I have cut the sides off mine to have a more square profile.....looks more like an air filter now. I found the std seat fine.....with my package I got a free ctr stand and de=lux seat.....its great....but so is the std seat. Be lost without the ctr stand. So to me....its my perfect bike....I never carry a passenger......power is ample.
Bravo mate, Finally a review from a real perspective with experience. I have a 2002 100th anniversary t100 and could not have said it better myself. I totally agree with everything you say especially regarding the 5 speed box. It rides as smooth as new, i too have around 50 years riding experience starting with dirt bikes when I was 9 to road bikes when 18. I'm near 60 now. Great work, I'll also mention that at 5ft1 it's a great seat height, I've ridden heaps much taller but don't have to rely on vertical skills with the t100.
Really good, thorough review, I agree almost 100%, and the nits I'd pick are somewhat personal preference, and some may be due to a different model year as mine is an '02 (it's my newest bike of three; next oldest is a '97 T595 Daytona, oldest a '73 Yamaha TX500, I'm the original owner of all three). Mine has carbs, but I haven't had any issues (but then I haven't taken it above 5000 feet either, my Yamaha didn't care for the Rockies much when I rode it cross-country back in '75). Stock seat is fine, felt a bit hard at first but I've ridden up into PA a few times as well as down to NC, 500 miles is not a problem, and I've found from those trips that indeed it does not need a sixth gear (the Daytona has 6 and I almost never go above fourth; why bother when a 60-100 roll-on is so easy and fun). Suspension was definitely too soft, I handled it with Race-Tech springs and Cartridge Emulators up front (the transformation is amazing) along with the less-expensive non-reservoir Ohlins shocks. Front brake was NOT good enough, switching to EBC sintered pads helped but what really got it to where it stops like it should was Spiegler steel lines along with Galfer wave rotors. (Though I do wish there were at least an option to mount a second disc; my "73 Yamaha has a factory dual disc conversion kit on it.) And mine has metal side covers and front fender (as well as chromed engine case covers, it's the Centenary Edition). Don't know why I never checked your channel before, this just showed up as a recommendation today, I'm certainly familiar with your comments elsewhere (like Hawk Girl's channel).
Thanks for stopping by. That's a nice collection of bikes. My hope is ti dispell some of the myhths on the new Bonnie's. If you watch some reviews you'd think they could be beat by a moped. Thats why I did ny Vegas and back in one day video.
The five speed gearbox is great, but it could definitely use a wider range between gears ⚙️ The brakes are marginal at best, the suspension is the weakest point on the bike. My 2014 is going to stay in my stable of motorcycles 🏍️ for life 😊❤ That’s the honest review… ❤Triumph❤.
I have a 2005 Bonneville T-100. I love it. It never says don't ride. I also have a BMW R1200RT, a Triumph Sprint ST, an 800 Tiger, and a couple of 850 Norton Commandos. I'm without a Ducati for the first time since 1967. So I have, and have had, some very good bikes to measure the Bonnie against. I don't think I'll ever sell it. There are other bikes I want but it is all horses for courses. The ideal course for this bike is around town and on back country roads.

My 01 California EV has a 5spd. 3rd gear is 1:1 which is 1 round of the output shaft on the tranny is one round of the crank. 4th is 1:.85 and 5th is 1:.76. So even with a 6th gear look at what the final output shaft to crankshaft ratio is. Enjoyed the video ADD. Beautiful bike and RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
I have a 2018 Street Scrambler and agree with almost all of your conclusions…do wish it had the single button cruise control like on the T120. Overall I absolutely love the bike…fit and finish of the modern Triumphs are quite good.
I've clocked 121.500 Km. on my 2017 T100. It has been a pure joy. Only troubles I've had, about a year ago I had to repair both the Reg/Rec wires. Theres a design fault there and The bike just packs up. Last month I had to replace a section of the wiring harness/loop ( would have cost a fortune to replace the whole thing as Triumph suggested ) at the same time had to replace the Throttle switch. Thats all folks
Looks like a fun bike and a great commuter. Triumphs are my favorite I have a 2020 Rocket GT that I love with torque of 160+ ft pounds. Twisting that throttle is my drug of choice, lol .
@@azdesertdog I'm really enjoying this bike. Like you I do ride on dirt roads a fair amount here in northern New England (Vermont) and this bike is a joy for that. I do need some dual or adventure tires. My bike is a 2022 T100. Triumph reduced the front wheel diameter has been reduced to 18" which is really limiting my ability to find suitable tires. Most of my time is spent on twisty paved roads out in the country so I think an 80/20 tire is probably the way to go.

Good review. I agree with everything you day except what you said about ABS. I'm not sure why you don't like it because it has no effect atall unless you are making a very hard emergency stop and then it can save your life. I ride a 2015 Triumph Rocket 3 Touring with ABS and I basically forgot about it because it has never kicked in. But it's goid to know it's there in case of an emergency. I love Bonnevilles.i rode one all over North America in the late 60s not knowing where I would end up each day. It was wild times and the adventure of my life. My Bonneville T120 leaked oil badly from the frontpusheod tube, sometng neither I nor Triumph could fix but i still loved that bike. I would love to get a new one but at nearly 75 and with my R3T taking up so much garage space, I don't have room for one. Your point about fuel injection is so true. I remember my Bonneville going at literally a walking speed sometimes on mountain passes. There were times when I actually had to push it. A couple years ago i took my R3T in a 6,509 mile solo trip out west and never noticed anything at altitudes. Fuel injection is a huge improvement.
Thank you. I'm not a fan of ABS for several reasons. It's mostly opinion or preference. I dislike input from sources other than me. Some bikes you can't turn it off or like my KTM you have to turn it off every time you start it up. I ride a lot of dirt and live on a dirt road so I do get bothered by the ABS more than someone strictly on pavement. My 1090 was out of commission for two months because a rock took out one of the wheel sensor cables. I don't think it's bad it's just not for me.
I have seen hundreds of videos on this bike. I always wanted to own a Harley, but nothing they do these days gives me any kind of excitement. They made the blessed Sporsters disappear. A very big mistake from my point of view. Bonnie always comes back on my radar. I love this bike, and I've been watching videos of the T120 until a lot of riders started to explain that the fun, the tasty, was in the T100. Your video has convinced me. I think it is the most enlightening explanation that I have had on this bike. I thank you and I will go for one.
Totally agree! I have a BMWr1200R and a 2020 t100. I find myself riding and enjoying the T100 much more, it truly is a fantastic bike. What kind a bag to you have on the back of your bike?
Thanks for this one. I live out in the East Valley. I got a ‘22 T100 last December. I’ve been thinking that maybe I got the wrong bike because I see all the sport bike dudes just flying on the 202. I actually went to Ride Now in Gilbert to trade in the Bonneville for a Yamaha MT. When they wanted to give me $1650 below blue book, I left. I’m thankful it didn’t work out. I’m 53 and have been riding for a year and a half. I often feel like I missed the crotch rocket portion of my life but frankly if I was riding a liter bike in my twenties I probably would not be alive. The Bonneville is just right for me and my skill level and the fact that I have 2 young daughters and I need to be around for them. What road are you riding on? I typically ride out to Tortilla Flat, the Usery Mountains and Florence. I’d like to find new places to ride.

I live on the other side of the planet, in Greece, yet I couldn’t relate more… In my late 40s, two daughters, 2 years riding “full time”, apart from occasionally riding random bikes in my youth. I just bought the T100. The 1200 model would be too much for me. Plus, the fuel economy of the 900 engine is outstanding. Glad you’re enjoying yours.
Have to disagree with your ABS and Traction control comment. I commute in L.A. 50 miles one way (100 per day), average speed purring at 80 mph. I've put 26k on it in 2 years. Lane splitting is legal here and I get cut off almost daily. If it weren't for ABS I would have certainly crashed into one of these people who have cut me off suddenly. ABS is literally a life saver. Traction control is awesome on slippery roads or when you take a turn with a deep lean - less chance of low-siding - it just feels right. I will never again buy a bike without them. 2020 T100 purchased with 1 mile on it 2 years ago. Other than that, spot on. Awesome bike.
I bought a 1200 Thruxton about a year ago. There is something about Triumph thats hard to define. I was born in Wales and lived in Australia since 1967. We do not have an issue with patriotism expressed in Harley ownership. Where I live there are no freeways or motorways or autobahns. We do have mainly straight flat roads. I experience no built up area communting, just open country roads. I changed the rear sprocket. The 1200 wil now l cruise at 70 mph at 3800 rpm. The bike handles well so you can hold your speed on corners to compensate for acceleration. I traded a Kawasaki zx14R with 200+hp. My main cruise speed on that was 90 mph, which the Triumph does . On a zx14R i would go faster on long straights that go for 20/39 miles with barely a corner. The Triumph is running out of steam at 100/120 mph so it took a while to adjust. I actually wanted a slower machine, its why I traded. The Zx14r has massive torque you use on corners to improve grip. The Triumph lacks that . Hiwever i am not sorry I made the change, as a Triumph really is something else.
@@azdesertdog I had a zx14 and a zx14R for 16/ 17 years. With money my mother left me, I bought a new red zx14 in 2006. Had a 1900 Yamaha a few years ago as well and i got to like really slow cruising and sightseeing. I started to find the kwacka just too intense. I had told myself I would sell it when i was 70 and I did but i was 69. I was looking for a motorcycle for my wife and saw the Thurxton and rang the Dealer and said i will buy it im on my way and rode 200 miles to trade . The zx is a first class machine but going slow was actually the max speed limit and i always rode around at 90 to 110 mph, with no real intent. Though the Thruxton is much slower, it takes more concentration to ride as it goes where you look so sightseeing is off
have a 21 t00 great comparison the newer bikes even better some mods done fantastic bike maybe the best all-round bike ,the fueling is superb and a great bigger beginner or ladies bike
Thanks for the review, I've been thinking about getting either the T100 or the T120 But I read somewhere that they tend to overheat in hot weather. You're in the perfect location to know if that is true or not, so have you had any problems?
Some people get nick picky over the weirdest things, key in the gas cap only helps one to remember to put the cap back on plus prevents losing the key, just my opinion. I hate to brag on you but I really like the way you done this review. I need to find a negative so you dont think I am flirting with you haha.
Great video. I'm thinking of buying a 2006 Bonneville (790cc, 60hp) as my daily commuter. I'm between that & the new Interceptor (same price here). Besides the new bike thing (warranty etc), as a bike, as a daily commuter, which one do you think is more comfortable (suspension, seat, brakes) for start-stop situations or bumps?
Thanks for watching. I am not so familiar with the early 2000's Bonnevilles. I have ridden the Interceptor. Comparing it to my Bonneville the Interceptor was nice but not at the level of Triumph. When you purchase a new bike you'll loose a large amount in value as soon as you take possession. That won't matter if you keep it long term. The big advantage is the Enfield has fuel injection and as you said a warranty. Depending on mileage an 18 year old bike may have some reliability issues. Good luck be safe.

I haven't ridden a bike in a very long time and being a Brit we always knew the Triumph was unreliable back in the seventies/eighties but having one was still something special. I bought a Honda NC750X dct. It is the ultimate commuter bike ( in my opinion). It has a 14.1 litre fuel tank. You can get over 200 miles on a full tank .
The T100 is 400 plus pounds but well distributed. I like it I call it my mini bike. My other ride is a KTM 1090 Adventure R. I gave up dirt bikes a little over a year ago.
I'm torn between the Bonneville and the Speed Twin. I'm not an aggressive rider but I like the classic looks and want an easy all round bike. Some reviews seem to say that one bike is better for a taller rider than the other,. I'm curious as to what other riders think.
The Speed Twin is a different bike. It's the 1200. The Street Twin no longer made was a 900 like the T100 Bonneville. It had cast wheels, softer suspension and a thinner seat. I think there is a 3/4" difference if I am not mistaken. The look of the Street Twin is a little more modern in paint, exhaust and wheels.
I'm 53 years old 6'3", 215 lbs and retired. I would like to buy a T100 or T120 as a first bike and would be a new rider. I prefer the T120. I want to get out and just go riding, some in town, some highway, and to take some longer trips after I get the fundamentals down and feel more confident. What do you think about the T120 for me? What Triumph accessories do you recommend starting out? I'm planning to take the MSF course and then buy a bike but I would like to do more training after passing the beginner MSF course if possible. I tried sitting on a T120 at the dealer. It was parked on an incline and when I tried to pick my left foot up to see how the position would be, it started to lean into the incline and felt like it was going to fall over. I was able to hold it up but I felt really stupid about it and it kind of messed with my confidence. I guess it was just a stupid mistake but it just made me feel less confident about getting a bike. I really want to get a bike and get out more but I want to do it safely and have a nice motorcycle that I can really take good care of.
Thanks for watching Bill. First great idea on training. I always recommend that to any new rider. It's easier to learn the correct way than erase bad habits. See if they have rental bikes. Tbey usually have easy to ride 250s and you don't break your bike. As far as T120 vs 100. That is hard to say. I took my T100 300 miles to Vagas and had no issues. A lot of people like the extra horsepower of the 120. Both are easy to ride. As far as accessories the only thing I would recommend are a set of engine guards. Incase you drop it they will protect tbe cases. TRex Racing make a good affordable set. Anything else is subjective. Ride the bike for a while before you make any changes. You'll develop confidence with experience. However, a motorcycle is not a stable vehicle like a car. There is always a chance you may crash or drop the bike. Good luck ride safe and get some good riding gear for you.
Nope stock has a great sound and doesn't cost anything. I usually change to aftermarket for weight savings but there's not a ton of difference for the money.
Both are equally as good on a work commute. The maintenance and tire cost on the 1090 take away from the financial benefit of commuting on a motorcycle.
You should have crashbars on your bike. You never know when you might need it. Expensive damage even from a simple roll off the stand. Protects against from damage from low speed get offs. Have them on all my motorcycles. All motorcycles should have dual disc brakes for safety.
Hey Frank. The bike has crash bars and a skid plate in this video. I'd recommend them to anyone who owns a bike that they cab be installed on. Did your T6 come with dual discs?
@@azdesertdog My Triumph Tr-6 with a hard tail and magneto has the twin leading shoe front brake. It's so lite it stops on a dime. I wish my Sportster had dual disc brakes. Lots of bad drivers in Florida. The triple disc braked new URAL has the same stopping distance as my drum brake model. I like drum brakes. Easy to work on. I replaced the front brake cable on my URAL side car outfit in 30 seconds. All of my BMW's disc brakes go soft in storage but my drum brake models are fine.
Long distance comfort on both is very good. Each has their draw backs. The 1090 is a larger motorcycle and for a 6 foot person I'm not as compact on the 1090. However, tbe 1090 is built for off road and is like riding a dirtbike on pavement. The Bonneville has great road manners. It's a smaller bike and traffic doesn't notice you as well.
I don't have any real experience with 2 up. I did ride a stranded motorist about 10 miles. I'm about 250 lbs the person I helped was about 150. It did pretty well. I would be cautious when passing cars.
I just bought the T120 Bonneville and I can attest that the 6th gear is definitely an overdrive. Even on the highway I found myself tooling around in 5th not needing 6th until I really get up there over 60-70 mph. The brakes though....I disagree with you on. The Brembo brakes are by far the best brakes I've ever had on a motorcycle. Nissin are ok....just ok. Brembo's are in a whole other class. That said....the Nissin's are just fine for the majority of the bikes out there.

I love the aesthetic of the bike and enjoyed my test ride. However, I’ve encountered a number of issues concerning the transmission gears breaking, transmission selector breaking among other things that seem to happen at unpredictable mileage points. This has put me off buying the machine entirely.
Oh wow. So you own one and had thise transmission issues? Thats terrible bad luck. How did Triumph warranty treat you. Let me know how you made out with that.
The clutch/starter tie in comes ftom the 1990 when Triumph was relying on Kawasaki for engineering. During that period Kawi and Sazook were colaberating on several models.
Kind of disagree about the plastic. I hate plastic fenders. And almost every Kawasaki I’ve had would have some plastic piece vibrating or buzzing driving me crazy. Even cars these days come with plastic chromed grills. Just hate that. What are you gonna do though, it’s just the way of things these days. I had a triumph 2000 Adventurer, one of the first Bloor classics, I loved it. And I miss the UJM!
It's not made in England anymore. I have the real thing.l. I have had my Triumph Tr-6 with a hard tail and magneto for 40 years. I have had my Triumph TR25W Enduro for 20 years. Both British made. Reliable and dependable transportation as well. I don't have a car 🚗. My Sportster is my daily driver. My URAL side car outfit is my truck. I have less trouble with a 60 years old vintage British motorcycles than people who have new ones. Vintage motorcycles for rebuidlable forever ♾️. Light weight and truly simple. No electronics waiting to have a expensive failure. Modern motorcycle 🏍️ are disposable. Today's motorcycles are a collection of government regulations on 2 wheels.
Frank I appreciate your take on vintage bikes. However, they are not for everyone. I would hate to see a good vintage bike go to someone thar wouldn't know or care how to take care of it. I was around for all my dad's bikes of thar era he purchased new. They are not a cake walk. As for the new Triumphs the Taiwanese did a pretty darn good job.
@@azdesertdog Right now I am watching a Stuart Cunningham video about his trials and tribulations regarding gearbox issues. People having selecter replaced 5-10 times over and over again.Lots of people chimed in have the same issues. Poor customer service is unexcusable.
What is interesting to me / bothers me, to be more precise, is that the T100 is listed as 503lbs, and the T120 is listed as 520lbs. That 17lbs of difference could actually just be the additional front disc and caliper. I understand they have different engine displacement, sometimes a larger displacement can mean simply larger internal spaces = less metal, duh. However, that then brings the decision of 1 Vs 2 front discs down to stopping power over the motor's ability to reach higher speeds OR the cost associated with buying twice the components. Still, from Triumph's perspective, it seems like a miss due to the fact that their service centers miss out on the extra work involved in servicing 2 front discs... but, then again, if you only have 1 set of pads stopping the bike then you are (potentially) going to be seeing them more often. I don't like that kind of screwery, at all, and it is obvious to me that that is why they chose to dumb down to a single disc on the T100. Otherwise, if the T100 had dual front discs, I would consider it. As is, I am tempted to no longer consider any Triumph and search out another manufacturer who doesn't do such pithy scraping. Yamaha's seem legit in that respect, and it is about respect.
