A simple enough and straight forward enough job, surely? Undoing the seal holders and shuttle valve retainers would be the two possibly most difficult aspects of the job? Yeah, right ...
Thanks for your effort in showing us how to rebuild this shuttle valve type fork. I am trying to convert one for my 1950's BSA B31 in other to fit the better 2LS brake.
Feel your pain Paul. Had exactly the same issues when rebuilding my Daytona forks. I accrued so many "spares " while trying to get new parts to fit with old. Shocking!
Good old reliable stilsons. If you ever need a large set, being ex- heating engineer,I have some 48" s you could borrow. Great video. Just goes to show how badly these "new" old parts are made. I trust the client will appreciate all your efforts Paul. We certainly do. Thanks.
Beautiful work as usual. My fourth clanked over the bumps from 1979 until 2019, when I finally rebuilt them for the third time and changed the damper sleeve to put the thick part at the bottom. What a remarkable change that made. It is so much more pleasant not having that clunk.
An interesting video, as always and a chance to see the inside of triumph forks. So thanks for that. Imperial dimensions for parts made in a metric world whether it's 'O' rings or the grooves they sit in is likely to be the cause of much frustration. That said, buying carburettor parts and 'O' rings for old Japanese bikes, can be a similar nightmare.
Also you never showed the fitting of the oil drain plug into the cone shaped restrictor and the hex head retaining bolt and aluminum washer fitted into the wheel spindle cutaway recess. This always causes problems. Great instructional video btw. Cheers
G'day Paul, those pattern parts probably came out of India, l have ordered fork parts for my BSA lightning, hope l don't have crappy aftermarket parts sent as my tool kits not as good as yours, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.
So, the issue is the seal holder, clearly not the correct part, the other parts are fine. Would it have not been better to get the correct seal holders ? Your patience is amazing.
They were the 'correct' seal holders, but made to the wrong tolerances. The owner sent them to me along with the forks and most of the other new parts for rebuilding them.
@@melvynrogers3149 you will have another fight ahead of you to install springs and rubbers on the top of the seal holders which have their edges to wide to make this part of a job easy. As David said faulty pattern seal holders ruined it and in my case without a lathe I'd be forced to buy originals.
It seems you have the wrong seal holders. The threads on the slider changed to unified threads at serial number DU68363. The prior part number is 96-1654; post part number is 96-3633.
hi Paul only last week i bought some clutch spring nuts for my c15 trials and when i tried to fit them they were the wrong thread as luck had it i had the right tap so re threaded them job done but what should of took 15 mins it about 3/4 to an hour to sort it. it's a joke who ever did the QC, on these must of been pissed
I feel your pain..i despair at the shoddy quality of pattern parts..i did look for genuine oil seal retainers but no luck so tried an online parts supplier from the uk..now im bracing myself for the heafty bill...
the `o` ring grooves might have not been undercut enough ? if there`s enough meat to get a small boring tool in and machine it out on the lathe paul ,that could cure the fit but admittedly its a a bit of a fiddly forking task !! 😁👍
Most of the sellers are just selling MCA and Wassell parts that are complete rubbish. My belief is, that to avoid intellectual property issues, they change key dimensions, so, of course, they don’t fit. Always best to ask before you buy.
They were 'correct', just not made to the exact original tolerances and who is to say the next set would be a perfect fit? Perhaps I might have ended up with a few sets which weren'r quite right. That is often the trouble with modern replica parts. I was able to sort them out with some basic lathe work and a bit of 'elbow grease', job done.
@@paulhenshaw4514 I did this very same job a couple of years ago and used repro parts. Never had a single problem with them not fitting. My repro parts obviously never came from China!
