OK so we've diagnosed some issues with the carb settings that are contributing to rough running so let's strip them and check them out thoroughly as well as taking the opportunity to refit the original bodies if they're not worn. I love this job - not.

i have an 1965 A65 "E" , thats been chopped, developed a constant missfire on one side. it starts first kick, idles great ,revs up . soon as you jump on and put it in gear it sputters and coughs badly. i tryed everything, been throught the carbs a dozen times, different needle settings , tryed swapping needles and mix setting numerous times, gave up on it and took it to a local "old BSA guy" that my dad knows. he calle dme up and said the he figured it out, he took a brand new pair of carbs off one of his bonnies, and fitted them to the BSA along with his cables and twist grip. he said it runs like a dream now. so he ssays both my carbs are worn out, and my 2 into 1 cable wasnt letting the slides come up all the way., he says i need new pair of carbs , new calbes that instead of a 1 into 2 system , he wants to fit a twist grip that has 2 cables that go down to each carb in 1 piece each. just an interesting dicovery that both the carbs a re bad, he said he has seen it befor ,but never as bad of a missfire as mine, what would cause a carb to missfire so badly but the internals looked ok? even he said he looked at them and didnt see any obvious damage or issue.

Thanks for the interest and comment. There's a lot of variables you've highlighted. Bonneville carbs settings will probably be different to the BSA - did he set them up as per standard specs? Is the bike running standard compression and ignition? If standard ignition, is a condenser bad or if electronic, is the battery good? I can understand why a two into one cable might restrict slide movement if there's not enough adjustment in the cables either side of the junction box but that wouldn't cause a misfile unless perhaps the slides were badly out of balance. Are the tappet clearances correct on all valves? Those are the sort of areas I would check, check and check again.

@@BSAPowerSet , as for the jetting he used on his bonnie carbs i am not sure ,my BSA runs a 190 main. but the fact that he put them on and the bike ran flawlessly says my carbs have a big issue. not spark related as ive gone threw the entire ignition system and it works perfectly, boyer box. its a high compression pistons, as its a 1965 spitfire/hornet , chopper. not stock anymore. both tested at 165 lbs compression . im just surprised that the carbs could cause a brutal miss on one side ,the other side works fine. but i guess swapping the carbs out was definitive,. slides were in balance, tappet clearences checked multiple times(good) . and inside the carbs, no sign of anything out of whack. needles were 3rd postition . jets all clear, checked float hights. this was a real stumpper of an issue.

@@jackbeanstock7710 Fair enough. It's frustrating when there's an apparent fix as proven, but you don't know what the root cause is.

@@BSAPowerSet the struggle is real!, keep up the good work. your channel helps us do it yourself kind a guys! now just 1200$ for a pair of amal carbs might have to wait for that one.... have you any luck with wassel carbs?, its about 500 for pair of those.? any good?

@@jackbeanstock7710 Thanks for the kind compliment - I'll keep on going and trying for as long as I can. I've not had any experience with Wassell carbs I'm afraid although I've heard some negative feedback regarding the quality but can't verify that.

Looking fresh, does the boyer ign work OK?

Seems to be fine Matt and the battery is good so no concerns on that front at the moment.

What size pilot jet was in the premiers? If 19s that would explain the pilot air screw setting
@BSAPowerSet
@BSAPowerSet Месяц назад
Hi Nick I didn’t have the specs so don’t know but that didn’t matter as the bike ran much better when initially assessed when I reset the pilot screws to the specified position - see previous video. Thanks for the comment and interest.

Original Amal carbs have 'Amal Birmingham England' cast into the body. Oh, hang on. That was the monoblocs and it was on the float chamber cover. Original Amal concentrics from '73 simply had 'Amal' cast into the body. So those 'original' carbs with 'Amal Made in England' on the body are very far from being original and that is why the castings look so ropey.

Thanks for the interest and comment Dave. I've never noticed that - does that apply to concentrics and monoblocks?

@@BSAPowerSet When I say original, I'm talking about carbs originally manufactured by Amal of Birmingham that were fitted to British bikes over many decades. I have a fair few stashed in my garage. No 27mm Concentrics unfortunately. They are like gold dust. When you referenced the 'original carbs with the short tickler' I wasn't sure what you meant by 'original'. A copy of the original? Or the original carbs that your client supplied you? It wasn't clear. All I know is that geniune, original, monoblocs from the sixties have 'Amal Birmingham England' cast into the float bowl cover and genuine, original concentrics have simply a raised 'Amal' cast into the body of the carb. Jeez, those castings for your client's 'original' carbs are ugly. And why have they been spray painted? That is asking for trouble. Oh well. Have fun 👍

@BSAPowerSet Месяц назад
@@DaveFiggley Cheers Dave. The owner supplied the original Amal carbs fitted to the bike. As you say, they have a raised AMAL cast into the body on one side. The factory painted the carbs silver on the Hurricane as standard.
@DaveFiggley
@DaveFiggley Месяц назад
@@BSAPowerSet The factory painted the carbs? Ha ha. No they didn't. With respect, you're talking rubbish. "Amal carbs originally came with a very light clear coating protecting them."
@BSAPowerSet
@BSAPowerSet Месяц назад
@@DaveFiggley The Hurricane carbs were definitely painted silver as the standard finish Dave. Whether Amal or Triumph painted them I don’t know but with respect I’m not talking rubbish. I owned one for 20 years and there are many published articles referencing this. This in contrast to the carb rack painted black which is also standard - which was not the case with the other triple models. By the way - you are right in stating that the original concentrics had Made in England embossed under Amal on both sides of the bodies - certainly the early ones with extension ticklers as on the T160.
