Yes! I got to ride a Rocket III!
My first ever ride of a Triumph Rocket III!
It has a 2.3ltr Inline triple engine...
What a bike...
I hope that you enjoy!
Pip pip!
Warning: Slight bad language (certainly justified anyway!)

There's something about the Rocket III that makes its riders just laugh out hysterically when reviewing it. Looks like absolute fun.

I just bought one last year and I love it. I've owned 17 rides and have ridden twice that. From Honda valkyrie to the Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 to giant Harley baggers. I've ridden all the big bikes. The triumph rocket has got to be the best bike I've ever ridden. When it comes to comfort and accessories.....ok maybe not so much. But the roadster is surprisingly lighter than my Vulcan 2000 and my Vulcan voyager 1700, which both surpass 900 lbs and are a tad top heavy. The roadster is perfectly balanced and is just a breeze to ride. It's a muscle bike so you gotta have muscles to maneuver this beast. But for me....I'm 6'2'' and pretty strong.....I never have any issues whipping this bad boy around as if it weighed no more than 500lbs. My one complaint is that this beast doesn't wanna ride slow....it wants to move and move fast. Also gas usage is far from economical for a motorcycle, due to only getting maybe 25 mpg. But honestly ...if you're a thrill seeker, love power, going fast and getting all kinds of envious looks....this is for you. I'm sure the Ducati and the Yamaha vmax out perform the rocket iii roadster......but they're not as pretty as far as cruisers go. Just one piece of advice, don't go out on a bike run with this riding with a bunch of Harleys. The rocket iii roadster has a mind of its own and will want to leave them in the dust the moment they rev their engines. Remember Harley is the only motorcycle manufacturer that can convert fuel into noise without the side effect of torque. 😃

Brilliant comment! I almost want to frame this! Thank you for your excellent points that come from actual experience! I'm a similar build to you by the sounds of it, and I'm sure that I would get used to the warp tunnel effect when you twist it all the way! :-) I was very surprised at how quickly it handled... Cheers and ride safe my friend! :-)

RG Vinson II I'm 5'10" and probably really weak and dont have a issue handling the bike. Other than if the bike is stopped and at a bit of a decline it can be a bit heavy to push back only because my feet slip if there is a bit of sand on the road. Some people make it sound like or think you have to be a body builder to handle the bike and that couldnt be further from the truth. Its not a tall bike but it is wide so someone with short legs would have issues. Its sad to see such a great bike go out of production, possibly due to people thinking its a hard bike to handle. Also if you are getting 25 mpg you have some serious tuning issues. Even when i beat the shit out of my bike its pretty hard to get bellow 30 mpg. Typically i get around 36, ive gotten 42 mpg but that was being really nice to it which all and all isnt great mpg on a bike but who buys this bike for economy?. I had a dealer fuck my tune up and the mileage dropped hard into the 20's until i got it fixed.

This reminds me of the first time I took a friends Fireblade out a hundred years ago. Cautious on a borrowed machine until I found myself on an empty stretch of sexy twisting road with low hedges on either side so I could see for miles. I dropped her into second, yanked on the throttle and climbed through the gears. Less than 30 seconds later I was sitting in a pile of warm last night's dinner and my arms felt as though they were four inches longer (Useful for scratching your knees while walking). My friend told me that when I came back with his bike I had an expression of frozen astonishment on my face that lasted an hour. I think this machine has the potential to replicate that experience. I may just pop out and arrange a test drive. Great video as always.

It was great to see your obvious joy at your first ride of the Rocket. I bought mine in 2011 and I still laugh like that every time I take it out. Solo blasting, two up cruising and long distance European touring its just a fantastic bike. I would urge you to try it again now the trepidation may have worn off. You will be utterly amazed at just how agile this bike can be. Blasting around the Alps with my friends on a Sprint GT and a Diavel opens your eyes.

Absolutely love the sound of that big 3!! and your laughter is contagious, I was laughing along with you ;-) I'm a smallish guy (5-9, 147) and this beast looks a little too big, but a say, 1500cc version weighing 550-600 pounds would be doable and very desirable.
@CaptainRambunctious

Not at all. It's only heavy when stationary. Once going, it's really light. They got the geometry of this near perfectly. However, there's a new one coming out! :-)

Good review, looked like you enjoyed it. Owned one of these for just under a year and half now and still love it. Done 15000 miles , Changed the tyes to Avons ( and apart from the rear blowing out due to delamination within the first 500 miles on the m5 ) they seem ok for grip. This is my first cruiser after owning loads of sports and naked bikes changed pipes and mirrors. Next step could be supercharger!!!!
@CaptainRambunctious

Steve Read Blimey! A supercharger really would change it somewhat! Might need to upgrade the suspension and transmission if you did that I reckon. Definitely the clutch at any rate! But you are very lucky. Thanks for watching!

I bought my Rocket last year and never had so much fun with my clothes on. It's a thrill every time I take her out on the road. My biggest gripe as far as the looks go is in regards to the torpedo tube exhausts. They are just so big, I am looking for something sleeker and better sounding, but otherwise I'm still in love with her. That explosive acceleration is addictive. I was in awe of her when we first paired up and the power on tap made it a little nervous for the first mile or so but chugging along the A31 on a Rocket soon puts a huge smile on your face. Without doubt, the best bike I have ever owned. I cannot imagine ever parting with her.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 9 лет назад
Wow! Brilliant comment! Thank you. Lots of exhaust options out there... Newr3 and British customs and speedycom.co.uk all do their own versions but you're right about the exhaust being s bit too straight! Zard do very modern looking ones too. And carpenter Racing can do one hell of a package for a Rocket III. Anyway, glad you love your bike so much and keep enjoying! :-) Ride safely!

I love the Rocket. I had 3 of them on my life. I change bikes and then I return to the Rocket simply because it's such a joy to ride. It is heavy when stationary, but on the road you barely feel the weight at all, really well balanced. It has a surprisingly amount of ground clearance, so you really have to push it to scrap the pegs. On the city you rarely go over third gear but on highways you push 5th and leave it there, you wont shift down even when the road starts to climb. However it feels the need of a 6th for long runs, specially to help in fuel consumption department; on the city, if you use it daily as I do, the full tank would last a week, not fuel friendly at all, but for what you get its a nice deal. Triumph is not very good with the accessories and honestly finding mods for the Rocket is not easy and rather expensive, tires and brakes are wasted rather quickly as well. My only advice, is that you always check if the underground parking is open, you will not want to drag it by hand back, on reverse, to the surface on your own.
@CaptainRambunctious

An excellent comment. Thank you. I revisited this bike a few months later and did a video then. I was a lot more confident on it which really helps it come alive... I agree with all your points! Thanks again.

I've only ridden a few of these on test rides and I found them to be a massive handful. But, like yourself I couldn't stop laughing at how much torque these monsters have. I am only 5'7" tall but managed to feel quite at home on it due mainly to the comfortable saddle and the bike's own ergonomics. I currently own an Suzuki M109R and if the R3 was a twin cylinder I would have one of those instead. I really love the sound of the V twin and that might just be enough to keep me on the M109 for some time. Thx for posting.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 9 лет назад
Byron B It was great fun! Interestingly enough, I rode a different one yesterday and as I had ridden it before, I was able to be more positive in my inputs so it reacted well and I enjoyed it more! If you prefer a twin, have you considered the Triumph Thunderbird Storm, Commander or LT? They are 1700cc (104") parallel twins that have 270 timing interval for that V-Twin sound... Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting! Glad you enjoyed it. Ride safely chap!

Just found you btw, I shall check out more of your videos, subscribed too :) I grew up in Bedford, so not far from Hemel Hempseed, and now living in Texas would you believe! @CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 9 лет назад
evo moto :-) I'm in Aylesbury but grew up in Northants, so know Bedford too... :-) The Rocket, don't you find it just a bit too heavy? or are there straighter bars that stock because I felt that they bent in towards me too much... That would help the manoeuvring for me! :-) It's a pity about the economy though. That's how I sell the idea to my other half... "It's got really good fuel consumption dear!" :-)
@Dumptheclutchevo
@Dumptheclutchevo 9 лет назад
Oh I know Aylesbury, my old man lives just outside of Wendover…perhaps a pint when I'm next there then fella! I only find it heavy after I've been riding another bike like my Daytona, or a supermoto for example, but otherwise it's surprisingly agile and 'flickable'. I'm 6' 1" and would imagine having issues if I were less than 6'. It's actually very good at low speed maneuvers but the clutch is a tad heavy! …and yeah, it's great when it's not in traffic, but now I get to tell the wife I need a new dualsport to commute on as it's 'safer' and more economical - the safety angle ALWAYS works!

Thank you for the info! I just felt a comment was in good order. You actually say, in the video, that this is probably how it is to ride a Harley. And the V-rod...well, I've tried that one too. Some like it, some do not. I was a bit dissapointed. You know the Harley owners do have a tendency to claim that Harley was first and that all the others are copies...some like the mother, some prefer the daughter! I thoroughly enjoyed your review...you are hilarious but you gave a very good review also. I am contemplating adding the R3 to the stable. I have been looking at this bike for about two years. I currently do some twisties on my 2007 FJR1300. I am looking for a cruiser/roadster and I have landed with the Rocket 3. What do standard maintenance costs run? Thanks and keep doing good honest reviews. Thanks CR
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 9 лет назад
John Williamson You're most welcome! Thank you for the kind words. I'd suggest that as it is shaft driven, your standard maintenance costs will be in servicing, tyres and washing the bike... Keeping it nice and shiny will be your most effort. It's lovely and will do twisties if you put a lot of effort in but it might be tiring after a while! I certainly feel that way after a day in the saddle doing twisties on my Thunderbird Storm. However, you can still have a very comfortable days riding which takes no effort when you take it easy... Tyres should last initially up to 6,000 miles on the stock tyres, but Michelins should last longer, up to 10,000 miles. Hope that this helps...

The storm because I have long legs and the foot pegs are further forwards, the Rev range is better, fuel economy is better and the handle bars are lower which I felt more perfect for my size. I'd try both though as just because the storm fits me perfectly, the rocket might be your type! Both are amazing bikes and the rocket pulls like nothing else! :-)

I have a rocket 3, owned it for 7 years. One thing I will say is that its very hard to take sharp corners on it, especially hairpins or slightly lesser corners. I ride mine in rural Scotland where the roads are very bendy and sharp, you have to take it easy on the corners there, you just don't know what lies beyond, mud or grit or some tractor parked just round the bend. Don't get me wrong I really know how to ride my rocket, its become second nature to me, but like I say it does not lean over as easy as one might think, after all its not a racing bike, and even if you do lean it over it will peg out very easily, and that can be dangerous. Its designed for cruising on the open road where it comes into its own, nothing will beat it there and I mean NOTHING! All in all, I would not part with it its such a thrill, and I have had many bikes in my life.

yes that is true ! it has a big inertia but once it's riding it rides like a pedal bike hahaha, so sweet ! also when driving at very low speed, in a parking lot for example, and just turning a bit ... never use the front brake while turning ! It accelerates like a rocket ( lol ) and drives like a charm ! Brakes are very strong reacting. I did 10 liters per 100 km ...... Yes, in the SHARP corners or the round-abouts you cannot take them with speed like a sports bike, you must keep the weight in attention, just easy turn keeping the bike as vertical as possible .... it's all about inertia !!! Cheers !!

Captain Just to clear something up in your Video, the Rocket doesn't have "Bar End Weights". The are elastomeric vibration isolators to get rid of handle bar vibrations from the engine. They work as designed. I rode without them on my Rocket and my hands went numb.... Just an FYI Sir!

you can "wheelie" it in any gear at any rpm. just snap the throttle open and the front tire WILL leave the ground. snap it too hard, though, and you'll find yourself skidding down the road feet first, flat on your back, with almost 400 kilos of steel and iron on your chest. i have an '07 Rocket III Classic since new, and i'm still a little afraid of it - at least, afraid enough to treat it with respect. the nice thing about all that torque? as you discovered, you don't have to downshift or even really put your wrist into it to pass cars on a highway. just roll on it moderately, and you'll back off long before you reach the bike's limit (unless you're brain damaged.) edit: also, as you discovered, it only feels heavy when you're lifting it off the kick stand. it really does handle like a bike half it's size. in fact, that was one of the selling points for me. at the time i bought it, i'd tested Victorys and Harleys. (i won't ride a rice grinder - my Harley-loving brother would strangle me.) the Harleys handled okay, but the Victory i tested was like a greyhound bus in comparison. if you haven't done so already, check out Jerry "Motorman" Paladino's youtube page here: ru-vid.com/show-UCf88EFO_GdwPw7XnVBl_0Iw after learning the techniques he teaches, i can turn figure 8's inside four standard parking spaces (5.5 meters by 9.75 meters) all day long. the Triumph engineers got the steering geometry perfect for that bike.

@hennienijrolder9075 8 лет назад
Well. Good question. Slow speed 8 in a box like that size... In the Netherlands it is part of the motor cycle examinations. But then you usually drive a small custom like a ltd450. And it was quite some time ago since I practiced that. Anyhow. As I wanted to be able to handle my bike completely I went to a big parking and tried. Not good. Very not good. With all the extra's my Rocket X is 400 kg. I had to lift it again. Luckily no damage. I think I was to unstable and insecure. Than I asked a driving instructor for some advise. The bike is to long. Sitting quite straight up will not work. But with a little more speed you can give the bike a side slope.... And the radius decreases. Starting with bigger 8 I worked back to the box of 9x6 m'. Maybe that I do get a little outside the box somewhere but in general it is possible. But you need to be on higher speed, than it is possible. And after a while trying it gets quit a kick. Turning on the road in one time is still a challenge :-)
@CaptainRambunctious

Hennie Nijrolder A sad story but a useful one! i though that as long as you rode the biting point of the clutch and dragged the rear brake, this works on all bikes... Sad. A little. Big guy. Big bike. And see it goes down in slow motion. Oeps. Lifting the bike was more shamefully. 😏 And a big lift of course..... And the clutch and rear break are basic. The problems were exaggerated and often caused by poor work at dealerships. Where the dealers were competent, the complaints were few and far between. Another problem is some people buy these bikes purely for hard and fast take offs causing clutch, tyre and sometimes gearbox problems. When they have had their 10000 miles of fun, they are put up for sale and some other poor bastard gets stuck with the poor reliability. If you get a well maintained bike, it should serve you well. But after watching some of the reviews I'm not sure if it's a good idea, some people say it's not that easy to ride it, some say it's very comfortable and pretty easy . I'd like to know what is your opinion on it? cheers
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 8 лет назад
+uniteehumaine Um, it's a tricky one. I think that as long as you concentrate hard on your slipping of the clutch and dragging the rear brake when slow riding and turning, you should be fine. Once going more than 5mph say, it's a lot easier to ride, just feels heavy at very slow speeds... It's when you are distracted at slow speeds that you are likely to drop it... I would say test ride it. It would easily suit your needs, and is very comfortable, but I would just question having one as a novice, purely for the slow riding part. The again, practise that a lot before you get the bike and you will be a lot better than experienced riders who never practise anymore.... It's a brilliant bike and if it flicks your switch, then go for it! :-)

@onlylexus

+uniteehumaine I suggest that as a beginner rider that you do not get a Rocket 3, I would wait until you have more experience with bigger bikes or medium ones up to the rocket 3. I have ridden bikes all my life, starting many years ago with scooters and then progressed onto a BSA bantam 125 cc, (a very long time ago) that was easy to ride and very light. As I got older I went onto 600 cc bikes that were heavier, I learnt a lot about counter steering on these, like on my Triumph Bonneville. The last 5 years I have been riding the Rocket 3, even for me that was quite a move up in power and weight. First thing I noticed on getting the rocket was its weight, especially when it was static and not moving. You have to make sure that its balanced at all times even when mounting it, also when coming to a stop or on uneven ground or on a hill start that turns to the left or right immediately, that is where one could drop it as you pull away, but you get used to it. Once I got used to its weight and my mind was mentally aware of how planning ahead was vital, the whole thing became second nature to me. The rocket will just about stand its self up once you get to 5mph, such is its low centre of gravity, what with most of the weight being low down, so yes after you set off its no problem. Just be aware that when stopping you need to be centred and well upright and look for the camber at the stopping point on the roads surface. If you are physically strong anyway this should be no problem for you. If you are looking for a bike that you can throw through the corners, then this is not the bike you want, its a cruiser after all. That is not to say that it will not corner well, it does in fact, but you have to make sure you are prepared for it and counter steer hard and then let the rest come to you. Having ridden my rocket the length of lands-end to the highlands of Scotland and more, I would not ride anything else. The feeling of power and stability and the rush factor is like nothing I have ever known or ridden in my long life. In fact after riding countless bikes The Rocket 3 is the one I shall always ride from now on. But, having said that, I would not advise a beginner biker to start with one, they need to gain some experience with medium bikes first then maybe after a couple of years, try the Rocket 3. Owning one is something that you never stop having to talk about, people stop me all the time to take photos, usually with them on it and me taking the picture. Mine has all the extras, the whole lot! and I keep it shining and pristine. If you get one your life will change and you will never stop talking about it, because they want to know what it is, as can be seen from my long drawn out essay here!!! Hahha. Good Look mate, I hope you own the Rocket one day, you will never look back, but just be careful though and take your time. Making a bike go fast is something that any fool can do, but making it stop fast is where the skill comes in. The bigger the harder.

Paul, thank you very much for your advise mate! I will definitely consider that. I started on a 600cc honda hornet, got used to that, but it seems too small in size for me. I will try to learn more about handling it in lower speeds and take it from there. I'm not too much of a speed freak, I get the speed part from other hobbies when skydiving and base jumping :) I like the idea of just cruising in the countryside, listening to music, and enjoy the scenery, letting my thoughts go far away. And yes, rocket 3 is something I always dreamed of since I saw it for the 1st time few years ago. One of these days mate..:)

I currently ride a hd came from BMW . I luv guzzis & triumphs too, but dealers are too scarce for my taste. Hd dealerships are worldwide. 700 apx in America alone. I luv all motorcycles but dealer network is my 1st concern.

Very true... If you need the dealer support where you are, then that's a mistake by the companies who don't nurture their dealers... Thanks for your point and for watching!

And the same in mainland Europe I've seen it in action, leaving uk with big nail in my mates Harley tyre ,send a text from a ferry at 8:30pm to Rotterdam Harley by 9pm it's sorted bike is picked up 9am next day as we land then coffee while puncture is fixed I was a spectator on my 05 triumph speedmaster and we both wondered would I have got the same treatment but ten years on I ain't had to test that yet 🇬🇧🇺🇸

more then any super in depth and eloquent review i feel like your giddy giggling and excitable noises make me want to buy the bike more then anything. do you feel like the power is excessive? im a tall guy and am tossing up between this and a thunderbird
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 лет назад
Hmm... The power isn#t excessive. The handling of the 2 bikes is similar. I loved my Thunderbird Storm, but if you have the money, then I think that you have to have the Rocket for even a small part of your life... :-) You will have a little more legroom on the Thunderbird though, so try both if you can...

@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 9 лет назад
It does go around curves very nicely but you have to put effort it. You need to tip it in and then hold it over through the corner. However, it does flick nicely one way and the other. It is definitely not a sports bike but it goes amazingly with that engine! :-) Does that answer your question?

If it's lighter than your Harley, then try one. I think that all Harley riders should at least try a Thunderbird Storm and Rocket III. I know someone who's now on their 8th Rocket III! Great great fun... Just doesn't tick the boxes for my uses, but for a giggle, it's outrageous!

I have a 2005 rocket and I was very tentative, after ridding a H/D sportster around 35 yrs ago when I was discharged from the Navy, let me tell you their is nothing like it and once you take your time and get used to her you will never be able to honestly replace her.So if you are one of those riders that like to try out different rides, don't buy a ROCKET 3 "Divorce Her For What?

Ye gods what a monster. 'Bigger engine than a Honda Civic'? I think it's got a bigger engine than 80 percent of vehicles on the road today...... The pistons must be the diameter of drainpipes.......

Captain Rambunctious I can quite believe it. I was actually at a Triumph dealer last weekend and I saw one on the forecourt. Bloody hell! But I'd rather have the speed Triple. To quote BVG - 'what a Jizz machine ! I want one. That or a GSXR. Thinks.... must pass full bike test and 'code de la route'. What a pain.

The bikes pistons are the same diametre as those of a Dodge Viper NAS car. That is what inspired the bikes build when John Bloor watched some racing while in the states.

Yeah I agree with this... Having the camera on the helmet is very off-putting when you are riding. The normal - and *necessary* - head movements are exaggerated in the video, and especially when the viewer is sitting still...
