Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review: Buy this over the Speed 400? | TOI Auto

While there are a few scrambler motorcycles in the market, however, the format has not really picked up pace yet. Scramblers are meant to be ridden both on roads and taken for some off-road excursions as well. They might not be as capable as ADVs but they do deliver a lot of fun in most situations. The Scrambler 400 X from Triumph shares a lot of components with the Speed 400 but intends to deliver a completely different riding experience. But does it manage to do so successfully?
The engine powering the Scrambler is the familiar 400 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled one and it produces the same 39.5 hp and 37.5 Nm. However, the Scrambler gets 150 mm suspension travel at both ends, a bigger 320 mm disc brake at the front and dual-purpose tyres. Time to find out how fun and sensible this package is, especially considering the higher price of Rs 2.63 lakh (ex-showroom).

You solved my confusion, I wanted to buy for 90% city usage but was always inclined towards Scrambler because of the looks mostly. Roads of Varanasi are terrible so this will make more sense.

Does Difference in the suspension travel, different alloy design increased ground clearance , justify the cost diff of 30k ?

So highway speeds here 100-130km/hr i would be past 5000RPM and into vibration territory...i wonder how that would be in a 5 hour day touring at 100km average say? Good review by the way you get into details other reviewers are not covering i appreciate that

I am also worried about vibrations. That's why waiting for RE650 Scrambler or BSA 650 Scrambler

Its a matter of riding it to see or feel in this case...all singles vibrate although moderns ones much less so...i like the INT650 engines its sweet will make a nice scrambler albeit heavy for offroad i think@@DAB009

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, there will be vibrations past 100kmph but in comparison to some other motorcycles, it is still not as bad. While doing about 120, it does settle into a low amplitude buzz which you can easily get used to.

Thanks man I appreciate your thoughts--like to hear more on this bike from you as i have a deposit on a 400X and i think it will suit our roads here in Thailand...the roads can be rough here so the 400X should be a nice mixture of style performance price and suitability for the roads even if i dont go offroad often....i am excited to see the new RE bikes too...India is taking off as a hub for bikes people actually crave...lots of excitement for these bikes and others ...Euro bikes are pricey and ugly and no parts network here and Japanese bikes are great but lack style---India is mixing form and function very nicely --@@aakashpaul9586

Everybody is talking about the present scenario of the bike can anyone tell about the service part because taking bike is one part and the other part is what is the maintenance cost of this bike. How many service centres do they have.. what is the main oarts cost.. we know this bike is good this and that.. company is saying service interval is after 16000 km which many people knows that in India ..we have to get the service done in max 8000-9000kms.. so please talk on that..

5'9 onwards will not have any issue

I live the foothills of Himalayas but am definitely not keen on going to Ladakh or record my rides with a GoPro. I do not see any places on road where I could rev up the engine beyond 5000 without breaking few laws so vibrations are not going to be an issue even at triple digits. My bike will be a daily rider, to office, gym, market and a few times on highway. Considering that our roads are often dug up but not exactly adventure type, I was inclined towards RE Scram411 but this blows it away. Further the service intervals gove alot of confidence in the reliability of the bike. Thanks for a good review.
