Triumph Spitfire…trying to get the windows to line up

We look at why the windows in the 1970 Triumph Spitfire move around as much as they do. We also want to see why they don’t line up to the hard top and sit with a gap between the window and the seals at the top when rolled up. We show how to remove the handles and door cards to access the inner workings and that a common mistake was made during the assembly of the doors due to most exploded view drawings being incorrect. We talk about how one wear item that is not available anymore seems to be the culprit of the excessive movement and a possible hack to adjust for it and how adjustments can get us a much better fit. Look for more videos as we go through the list to sort out this older restoration.

I have been told to get more forward adjustment in the doors it to remove the retaining blocks that the bolts go into and open the holes just a bit or open the holes on the door hinges them self's. I am going to be doing this in a video soon on my channel.

Yes, that’s how. I didn’t want to go forward with any more work to adjust it unless the owner gave me the thumbs up to, so I stopped there ( for now)

Hi there......I enjoyed your video. I have worked on many of these and "loose" window glass" is almost always down to missing or worn felt channels inside the front and rear vertical window channels?? Replacing these really makes quite a difference. I cant see any felt inside the channels on the car in your video? If you look up James Paddock LTD in the UK and search part number 850430 (not to be confused with the original assembly, which had the same part number) then you need 2 for each window. If you know the size (Outside size is internal width of metal runner, and inside size is glass thickness) then i am sure that you could buy it by the metre in the USA? Regards. Ken (Scotland)

The MG,s I usually work on have the felt channels, so that was my first thought. In my experience the cars that I have worked on that has the nylon guide block never list those in the parts books ( none listed for this car in my parts books either) and I’ve never seen evidence of any remaining felt in the channels of any of those cars ( including this one) so I figured theres nothing out there.

@@mgbgtguyThanks for the reply. I have done numerous Spitfire MkIV and 1500, several GT6, some Heralds and Vitesse and all have them. I wondered about the early Spitfires and thought that yours might be before these, but I recently looked at a couple of Mk2's and both had the felt, so might be worth you trying it on one door at least? It always makes such a difference?

Can you design and 3d print the nylon channels?
