Hi, I have a '76 Spitfire. I can't seem to be able to push both caliper pistons back in at the time. When I push one in, the other comes out. If I use a "C-clamp" to hold down one piston, the other piston is impossible to push back in while even using the leverage of a pair of channel locks. Do you think the caliper itself may be bad? Maybe a bad proportioning valve? The calipers and valve are original to the car.

Well, iv never heard of that. The only explanation I can think of is that the fluid is not returning to the cylinder so it is pushing fluid from one side to another. My recommendation is to remove the flex pipe (hose) and try it again. I feel it has failed which happens allot so if it goes back definitely replace both sides. I hope this helps.

@@planet6parts First, thank you for the response. I agree. I loosened the metal brake line where it meets the rubber hose and it still will not allow me to push both pistons in at the same time. Just moves fluid from one side to the other. This tells me that the hose has some obstruction inside that I cannot see. From some online forums, others say that the hoses can "collapse" inside over time. These are the original hoses so Iam suspecting something like that may have happened. I have ordered 2 new hoses to place both as you suggest. Thanks again for your great videos. Very informative and educational.

Update: The problem was the hoses as you suggested. They were completely degraded such that no fluid was being allowed to pass through them when the brake pedal was pressed. I guess after 47 years of operation, they just had enough and collapsed internally as the online forums also mentioned. The new hoses work wonderfully and the car stops as it should and the calipers release as they should after the brake pedal is released. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

@joeharmon1122 glad you got it solved. 90% of the time, they fail as the flexibility brake hose fails(implodes) and does not allow fluid to go back and forth. Very common issue.

The back pad it looked like you put the grease side towards the disk?

Hi, so I had to look as you had me worried. It really does look like it in the video, but if you pause it, you can see the back plate go to the piston side. The brake pad itself is brown, so i can see how it looks that way.

Everything you did you made a mistake - then the final insult - you didn't replace the shims! These are not to stop squeel, they are asymmetric pad wear devices to stop pads from tapering - wally!

@ptibbitts-nu9jr Hi, I always appreciate feedback or to spot any mistakes I make as im only human, but name calling is completely crossing the line. To say you're insulted and to name call, well, you better know how to do every single thing on these cars better than anyone else. I'm sure you have no issues telling us your shop name and location, (or youtube channel) so anyone looking to restore a British car can get the correct information and procedures to complete their work from you. Thanks John
