I have the same headlight/drl/idiot light setup on my Speedmaster. To me, it makes sense. You're going to want your headlight on at night, generally. What you don't want is a bright green light on the clocks causing an unnecessary distraction in the dark. At first I thought it was a little arse about face, but after 5 minutes or so I got my head round the concept fine. Nice video, once again. Stunning looking bike, nearly as good looking as my Speedy!

@divadrolyat

I believe the headlights should come on automatically. As the rider you should only have the option of high/low - in the name of safety and visibility. Paul Kinsella - I’d agree with you, a green light at night would be distracting. I don’t have one of these bikes myself, but I think it would be very cool if the DTRL was only visible when the ignition was turned on, and as soon as the engine cranks the DTRL stayed on with your choice of high/low headlights as standard…no need for a green warming light at all 😊

The US model of the T120 doesn’t have “daytime running lights” or a DRL switch . When you turn on the bike the headlight is in normal mode and there a switch to turn on/off the hi-beam. The bike is bigger than the speed twin ( has a different frame ) so it is going to be heavier. Compared to my Ninja 650, I don’t notice and significant weight difference. My 650 has gotten little use since I bought the T120.

I bought a new T120 two years ago and I've put 3800 around-town miles on it. I have to agree it is expensive but that's OK. I've never felt the bike was too heavy while moving it around the garage. By far my favorite characteristic is the way the engine makes power! Gobs of low-end grunt and great sounds! I also enjoy the appearance of the bike. Just today a woman shouted at me as I left the parking lot, "what sort of bike is that? It looks awesome!"

Good review Andy. I find the T120 a great companion and a charming bike to ride. It has plenty of power for the market it is aimed at. Those who want more from a Triumph can buy one of the triples. I tested the T120 back-to-back with a Z900RS and the Triumph - for me - had the character at "real world" speeds that the Kawasaki lacks. I will now make another unfair comparison. Given the choice between a new Interceptor and a 2 year old, showroom condition T120 with 2,500 on the clock for under £8K, I did not hesitate for a moment.
@davidbysh9994
@davidbysh9994 2 года назад
I have had my (2016) T120 for the past 6 months. I would concur about the weight (try getting it onto the centre stand !!). But once on the go, its superb. Very stable and the grunt is in the right area. One thing you have not commented on is the iffy low speed running, which many owners experience. I have (like many) fitted a power plug, which improves matters, but at low revs it still has patches of 'hunting' and surging. Other than that, its one of the best bikes I (at the grand age of 68) have the pleasure of owning.
@garethtemple6242
@garethtemple6242 2 года назад
Good to see another Triumph review and some interesting points here. On the subject of the DRL's, the headlight button on my 1200 scrambler has a mid position on the switch, which just leaves the DRL's on as the default setting when you turn the ignition on and then you can click the switch either way for high or dipped beam... Are the T120's controls different? Cost-wise, the comparison with the RE Interceptor is a bit unfair, because it substantially undercuts virtually an anything on the market. It's also, apart from being a retro twin, a completely different beast in terms of capacity, performance, build quality etc. A fairer comparison would be with something like the BMW NineT, which even in its most basic, low spec form (the Pure) is more expensive than the T120, with much lower equipment levels.

Great video yet again, I have just bought myself a t120 and I love it. That engine is something to behold, it just feels great. I do understand the back and forth between the Interceptor and the T120 in regard to which to buy as I've just been through it myself. Finally it was my wife (she's a keeper, coming up 32 years now) who said to me not to let price be a factor and go with the bike that made me grin the most. I did and am very happy, the Interceptor is a fantastic bike though and I get why it's so popular. I do love that bonne engine and the looks of the bike. Ride what makes you grin.

Love this comment I was in the exact same position and my partner convinced me to go with a 2nd hand t120 black over a showroom interceptor. The 650cc enfields are absolutely brilliant bikes and price aside its great to see a pretty authentic learner friendly entry to classic British motorcycling. As much as I adore my triumph I'd never hesitate to recommend an interceptor to a new rider, ride what makes you smile completely agree 👍

First of all, I do not own a Triumph, but if I did it would be the Bonneville T120 Gold Line. Yes, even MORE expensive, but the good looks has got me in a spell. I love the peashooter silencers of a Bonneville and the proper rear mud guard. The Gold Like paint scheme with the British Racing greeen and the silver on the side of the fuel tank and both mud guards are painted to match the side of the tank. I'd buy one today if I could. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.

Great vid Andy. And having test ridden the T120 when it first came out I'd agree. As you know, Kels and I plumped for a new T100 in July this year and we love it. It's literally 3/4 of the T120 in every sense and for us is perfect. I don't miss the 6th gear of the bigger bike as I feel that up to 75mph the little brother is still only pulling 4000 rpm and sits quite happily at that engine speed. For the kind of bike they are, that's perfectly adequate. It's more nimble too - not having the weight and gyroscopic effect of twin front discs. Please revisit the T100 when you can, I'm sure the upgrades will address most of the factors you found issue with when you last rode one. I'd love to hear your updated view?

Purely because of your original T120 revue I purchased one. I’m a “return to motorcycling” (35 year hiatus) retired old git and this bike ticks all the boxes. It’s bloody brilliant! I’m also very happy with the model I have (2019) which by comparison to the 2022 model gives me a centre-stand, chrome wheels (I love shiny things), a rear grab rail and a better paint scheme at the cost of a few engine upgrades and cruise control. The bike I have now is a bit better than when I first got it. I have replaced the original Pirelli Phantom tyres with Avon Spirit ST’s - what an improvement! Also the bike has been de-cat’ed and a TEC X-pipe installed in its place. The engine now feels more eager, especially low down and has a slightly better exhaust note; nothing anti-social just a bit of a rasp. I have no plans to swap this bike in the near future but if I did it would be for something like the Kawasaki Z900 RS. I agree with your opinion on every point except for the DRL indicator. You always have a light on by default making you more visible. As Paul Kinsella said in a previous comment, what you don’t want is an unnecessary light shining in your face at night; let’s face it, it’s a bit obvious if it’s not on in the dark and who cares during the day? That was still a great TMF review though.

Love this review, i agree about the light thing. The weight is not an issue to me or for me. The value, well I do believe it is worth the money, I just think that the enfield is exceptional value for money and therefore gives the illusion of T120 being a bit pricey. Hi. Loving the reviews! I have a Triumph Speedmaster and have to say I agree with Triumph regarding the running lights. The running lights are extra, extra bright and would dazzle other motorists if used at night. So the warning light is to remind you to turn on your dipped headlights at night if you forget. If there's was no warning light as you suggest, then we would all be merrily riding round at night with our running lights on and wondering why other drivers are giving you unusual hand signals!

I'm not small, wimpy nor have arthritic shoulders so that eliminates whinge 3 for me. Whinge 2: Price. When I was looking around for a retro bike I did indeed try the Royal Enfield and quite liked it but something you don't hear many, if any, people mention is the quality (or lack of). When I rode the Bonneville, like you alluded to, the quality is far superior and as you say, it's twice the engine. Also on price it's no more expensive than the retro Kawasaki Z900RS, I suppose it's horses for course? All the plus points you mention I agree with but would add that the sound from the pea shooter exhaust is definitely in my top five! I would replace your whinges of 2 & 3 with the mirrors, it needs (which it will get) bar end mirrors to see anything behind (slight exaggeration). Great video though 👍🏼

While I agree that the Bonnevilles are expensive, I do think that generally things twice as expensive aren't twice as good as their cheaper counter part. 80/20 rule is sort of at play here. Once can get 80% of the refinement for 20% of the cost. Its that last 20% that costs so much.

I have 3; a 2020 Speed Twin 1200cc and two 2012's a Bonneville SE and Thruxton 900. All three of the Triumphs have the roughest shifting (clunky) gearboxes; nearly as bad as the R100S and R60/5 BMW's I owned in the 1970's! I also have a 2020 Royal Enfield 650 that has 20,000 miles on it since new in May of 2020 - the Best gearbox ever. Will be selling the 2012 Triumphs and buying another R.E. 650 to ride while I install an S&S 742cc kit in my 2020 650INT.

The green drl dashboard light is to tell you that you should have yr headlight on unless you want more Sunday drivers to pull out without seeing you. In the 70s we only turned our lights on at night. In the 80s we had more faith in battery and charging system and started turning our headlights on in the daytime. Except for starting the bike and perhaps on motorways to ensure the battery was charged. By the late 90s we could run headlights on all the time - when I was in sunny California USA we ran on high beams in the daytime. The worst injuries Ive seen were from "didnt see you mate", a car just pulls out and there's no where to go. Ive had one and got away with it-ish by flying through the air! Do what you like but I want to know my headlights are on in the daytime and I check reflections ahead periodically to do so and a green light on the dash to tell me they are not is good for me! I like the T120 option to turn the headlight off - that can be handy.

Fair question is it twice as good as Interceptor. Perhaps same question could be made of the BMW GS, is it 4 to 5 times better than the Himalayan? I never thought the is it twice as good argument was a solid one. The price on any model is only worth the customers perceived value of what they want or desire. Tradeoffs based on price are easier to make when the bike it is your 4th or 5th bike so the demands on the bike are limited.

Our boiler does that: green light when not keeping the water hot and ready, it’s green for eco. Maybe that is Triumph’s logic. The new 2021 T120 doesn’t come with a centre stand. Another thing is that a dealer recently said the rear shocks on both the T120 and T100 need upgrading if regularly carrying pillion / passengers. I believe the latest T120 is lighter than the previous model and also comes with cruise control.

@@TheMissendenFlyer I thinks it’s where the weight has been lost that is significant as opposed to just a centre stand. Alloy wheels combined with the flywheel and some engine components. Just reading the comments there and I agree with the views that comparing a Royal Enfield or even a Norton to any Triumph is not justifiable. Triumph bikes are just in a different league as regards build quality and attention to detail. It was the main thing I loved about my T120 and its the same on my Thruxton R. Beautifully constructed and with top quality materials. Anytime I saw a Royal Enfield or Norton I always came away with the view that they were significantly inferior to the triumphs in their quality.

I rode a speed twin and street twin back to back. In my opinion, the speed twin was too much for the road, thundering up from 30 to 80mph in a way that was at odds with the style of bike. Between 20 and 35 it felt too eager and snatchy. I didnt enjoy it until I put it in rain mode! The street twin felt light, cheerful and you could use all of the engine up to 70mph and it felt much smoother. I'd only buy the 1200 if you where doing motorway work or taking pillions. Although my old bonneville 790 took me and a pillion for a 1500 mile tour of Scotland....

Bobber lovely but riding position not great for a long ride, nor is that infuriating 9 litre tank. I know some might say a new rider should not start off on a bike that size, although opinions differ from person to person and I am open minded. @@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks Andy. Assuming I stick with a Triumph, which I think I will, it's a bit of a tough call. Power wise the T100/Street Twin have 65PS versus 80PS for the T120. So it's not night and day and it's down to me to modulate my throttle hand. The seat height is only 790mm for the T100 and T120 and I can flat foot them both. So that's not an issue between them, although, granted, the Street Twin is lower still. As for weight, the T100 is 8kg lighter. That doesn't seem like much to me, but it's the main thing I want to check (apart from making sure I like the bike of course). However, the Street Twin is 20kg lighter than the T120 - that is a lot and I suspect it’s very noticeable. I'll test it with an open mind and if the weight is an issue I will think again. Thanks for all the videos - they are hugely useful and entertaining too!

Another great film Andy. Perhaps your price criticism vs Enfield is a bit harsh and unrealistic as it's not really comparing same eggs. If you widen your comparison to other brands with heritage models like BMW or Kawasaki they are very similar price to Triumph and maybe a nearer spec comparison than Enfield too. I really can't dispute that the Enfield is a real bargain but think it's an exception not the rule. You might well wait rather a long time for every other bike firm to follow their pricing example (or stay in business for long if they did). To some, Triumphs being manufactured outside UK means their price should be lower than the Japanese or German brands but while I'd prefer my Thruxton RS to have been UK built I cant fault any aspect of it's build quality and certainly don't feel short changed.
