Triumph Bonneville T120 Revisited - Almost Perfect? - Better than a T100?

I had originally bought a Triumph Bonneville T120 in 2020 but did not get on with it for various reasons, despite it being a marvellous motorcycle. I found it jerky at slow speeds and the throttle seemed to be difficult to move the revs smoothly. It did improve after a few resets but it was never fully resolved. On top of the throttle issue I also found the handling to be lacking, most likely down to the suspension I thought. I could have spent some money on upgrading the suspension and changed the tyres and even investigated the throttle further but earlier this year test rode a Triumph street twin, which as they say on Love Island, my head was turned and I changed my Triumph T120 for a Triumph T100. The question is, was it the right thing to do? Do I regret giving up those extra 300cc’s, horsepower and torque?

We chose the T100 having ridden both. The T100 was more than adequate even two-up. Our decision was based on value for money (for us). The T120 throttle was very on/off and jerky in comparison too. I put this down to the T100 having a single throttle body. But, as you say, with the T120 it depends on the mode selected. I therefore think it was more a case of the mapping between modes not being quite right - something they've been able to tweak and refine over the years? I prefer the handling of the T100 too. Not having twin gyroscopes at the front definitely makes it more flickable. Someone on youtube commented that the performance of the T100 was inadequate and "laughable". But I think he was a wind-up keyboard warrior rather than someone who could deliver a proper, considered opinion. In two years of riding I've never felt the need for more power - not even once. And as for 6th gear cruising above 80mph? On a naked bike, really? To anyone who's about to make the choice, I always say try them back to back if you can - with a pillion if you're going to ride two up. What's right for one person might not suit another. Great video 👍

Good morning TAYM, as always an honest report of your impressions. How nice that the T120 was able to restore its reputation a little. As you know, I drive a T120 myself and love it dearly. I've always wondered what problems you seem to have had with your T120, as my Bonnie runs smoothly and like Swiss watch. A comment on whether you need such a big engine: We are talking about our hobby here. Very few of us really depend on the motorbike as our only means of transport. In this respect, the question does not arise as to whether a smaller engine would not be sufficient, because riding a motorbike is actually unreasonable in itself - but it is enormous fun! And combining something inherently unreasonable with the question of whether a smaller engine wouldn't be more reasonable is completely pointless. The only thing that matters in this discussion is the grin factor and the emotions that the bike triggers in the owner. Everyone has to assess this for themselves and there is no better or worse, no reasonable or unreasonable. One more comment on your remark that the neck hurts at higher speeds. I wear an AGV K6 on the Bonnie. This helmet is light (carbon fibre), extremely quiet and has fantastic aerodynamics. The faster you go, the more the helmet behaves like a wing of an aeroplane, lifting the head slightly as if on a cushion of air. The effect probably depends on what kind of bike you are riding. On a naked bike it works very well. Have a good week and ride carefully! Best regards from Germaqny, RK

I fitted a Dart screen to the T100. Reduces wind pressure on your body but still feels like a naked bike. I had a carbon fibre helmet, loved the weight reduction but it was noisy. Good to hear (lol) agv make a quiet one.

I love the T100 but when I took my bike in for a service I wanted to see how much the 2021 spec T120's were improved over my brother's 2017 model. I agree with everyhting you said. The bike is smooth and the suspension is much improved. The steering feels a bit lighter than before, pssibly the clutch is too, and the standard rear shocks are way better than the 2017 model. However the T100 just feels lighter, the clutch is lighter, the gearbox is smoother. Also you can run smoothly in a higher gear on the T100 (it will happily sit at 30 in 4th) and performance in 5th at national speeds is lively. At motorway speeds the T120 ia more relaxing as the 6th gear reduces the revs. This is the T120 superpower, the 6th gear reduces fuel consumption at higher speeds. The T100 is a lot of bike for the price. The T120 has modes, twin discs, rubber fork gaiters and cruise is standard for the price for another 2K? On either bike I would buy a rack, heated grips, center stand and dresser bar for additional lights. On the T100 I added cruise because, speed cameras. I love the way engine braking on a Bonnie is good enough so that the cruise actually stays at the selected speed. Any Bonneville will make you happy. Depending on your personal size and preference there's a Bonnie for everyone!

Nice ride TAYM and I didn’t think you would go back to the 120 either, the T100 is way enough power for daily use and is easy to ride with slow speed and has more than enough for overtaking when needed…. As you know I absolutely love my 2020 T120 Bud Ekins.. It's true the throttle can be a bit snatchy in traffic but you can ride around that if you drop it into rain mode round town, it doesn't really affect riding it above 15mph. I also think the extra 35nm of torque (over the T100) rather than the 15bhp that makes it such a blast to ride. The new Euro 5 (2022 version) has had loads of standard equipment deleted (centre stand, dresser bar and grab rail saves 10kg alone) and it now has aluminium rims to "save weight" but to my mind that just makes it less value for money than the previously fully loaded 2020/21 version. Ok you do get cruise control now but that's at the expense of heated grips and I know what I'd prefer!

Isn`t it a pity that dealers (who SHOULD) know their bikes inside out could not have sorted that bike(maybe diagnosticallly) to your satisfaction. I think if they had, you would not have changed to the T100 however much you like it. What they are actually saying is that YOU as the purchaser do not know when something is wrong.... the proof being in your vlogs that you do know, .....they should have sorted it. It was Dick Whistles who complained about the blinker switch and I agree with him. The lurching you mention is present on my 2020 T120 but I lesson the affect by using rain mode in traffic. In regards to the newer model you rode I believe the whole bike is lesser weight due to no center stand, no radiator guard, no grab rails and lighter wheels not to mention no heated grips but lightened engine components to make the engine spool up quicker. All in all a slightly lighter, slightly quicker model with fewer accessories but cruise control which I wonder if it could be added to the T100 though I wonder if you would have use for it? I can’t deny I like the extra power, who could, it’s marvellous but on my own (no camera) I can ride my T100 much quicker down the back roads than I could the T120 and much more comfortable. I think I had a dodgy T120 right from the start, nothing you could put your finger on, just not right. Any how, this one seemed fine so who knows 😂😂😂

Ive owned a Honda CB1300S for 14 years. Its a great big bike but has loads of torque and is great on A and B roads. Like the T100 it has only 5 gears and could do with a 6th gear on motorways. Im considering changing this year as 71 now and plan to look at T100 and T120. I think i may find the T100 underpowered but the T120 is not signigicantly lighter which would be my reason for changing. My other concern is build quality although nice is not up to the honda standard. Think a couple ofvtest rides in order. Lovely bikes

Check out Pual Henshaw HE has built 612cc kit on 500.It wouldn't be as reliable as stock 500.If you want to do a build like that buy a Euro 4 Interceptor or GT & build a 865cc big bore kit also be way more reliable. Hitchcocks sells 612 kits as well as 865 big bore kit for the Euro 4 bikes. Euro 5 650 bikes can't currently do 865 but can do a Hitchcocks Stage 2 cam & high comp pistons kit & have Dyno sheets which show 55rwhp.A cam & high comp pistons is half the cost & need a clutch upgrade & gearbox stays smooth similar to 650 as 865 with clutch upgrade is clunky & 1st gear is tricky due to the tourqe.

@@TAYM One of the reasons for me thinking about the T120 over the T100 was there was little price difference that saw the T120 having a centre stand and heated grips already fitted and both now gone along with the rails. It an expensive bike getting even more so, time to ponder me thinks.
@TAYM
@TAYM Год назад
@@blearyview2254 they haven’t put the price up much though, I guess they are trying to stay competitive. The grab rail is about £270, centre stand about £200 and should imagine heated grips similar, prices without fitting so I reckon you are looking at just under £1000 if you added them. 🙄

Nice vid, well executed - no one needs a T120 (or even a T100) - there are lots of bikes out there I consider far enough bike. However, rode the T100 and T120 and loved the planted feel, the torque and power much more then the mopedesque behaviour of the T100. Would the T100 have been enough bike? Of course! Would it made me happy? No! So for the T120 I went and love to ride it every day. Stay safe Q

I've never had the snatchyness that some have mentioned, but the dealer did say they had to rebalance my throttle bodies at 500 miles since they were off a bit. Also I've heard of people getting the computer software reloaded and that sorting it out. The dealer I bought mine from doesn't do test rides, they don't even install a battery or load the computer software until you buy it. They don't even test ride it, you get it with zero miles. I have exactly the same thoughts but apparently you can fix a lot of punctures with a kit and a foot pump if you have tubeless. If you have tubes you need tyre levers and realistically, need to get the wheel off. 🤔 for most it’s not going to be an issue 😁 thanks Rider 😁

Don't need a center stand for maintenance better off with a paddock stand for maintenance. A center stand is 5mm out when checking slack & a paddock stand is like the bike sitting on the ground. Center stand be good for fixing flat tyre's if you on alloy rims & tubeless. Center stand the rear wheel is floating & moves up & down as stand mounted on frame as a paddock stand lifts bike by bobbins mounted on rear swing arm mimicking the tyre on the ground for more accurate for checking chain slack.If you got alloys having both be the one & get by without one on spoked tyre's.Also using a motorcycle chock in the front at home will extend side stand spring life & side stand risers are good on short side stand like on R.E 650.
