Stripping the bits off is certainly a great way to save $. But for the viewers, always check with your body shop before sanding. I've dealt with a couple over the years who prefer to do the sanding themselves, or they wont guarantee their work. Great job as always Del!

The heat shields I've done so far were green Scotch pad on the chrome, and high temp grill paint on top. I haven't even used primer, and you've seen the results I get. They hold up as well as you can expect "normal" paint to hold up. I've also done my ignition switch, fuel door lid button, and hinges and latch on my tour pack the same way. lol You've taught me a LOT about rattle can painting, brother.
@Moonfleet41

Hey J, great to hear from you, how is the big bad shredder going? Thanks for your kind words, but the skill at painting is all in your hands, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink, so many people have got the principle, but they just can't get the hand skills to lay the paint up evenly... but once you've got the muscle memory and practice, it's clearly something you would always be good at! Hope life is good, keep safe, D&Px

@@Moonfleet41 Hey brother. I'm having a ball on it, as you'd expect. The second set of parts is at the powder coater now, and it'll have the 10k done on it while the mechanic has it torn apart to replace stuff. I recently got a big kid air compressor (5hp, 2 stage, 80 gallon tank....Lowe's has been selling out of the Kobalt brand, so I got it for about half the normal price...) so hopefully, I'll get to try my hand at HVLP painting soon. As usual, an awesome thorough job, Del! That brake cleaner and heat gun really do give some nice results. On occasion, my mother-in-law sticks to her lawn chair. Hi Del, 400 grit is fine for the etch coat primer. Triumph have done a nice touch in making metal side panels, quality indeed. I have just discovered that anti clog sand paper, it has come in handy for all the plaster boarding I have been doing, it is very good stuff. If I was a gambling man i would bet those tank rubbers wont be going back on :) maybe even the tank badges might be replaced with some graphic stickers. Coming together nicely, keep up the good work.

As I kneel before the shrine of lightness - & Colin Chapman's image floats, unaided, in front of the magnolia blandosity of domestic living, - my heart gladdens to the sound of glorious scraping, the scream of torque sapping matter being shredded away from the comfy sofa of good looks, leaving the serious elements of the metallurgist's art free to achieve their greatness unhindered . . . then I awake . . . & realise it's just Del-the-paint clearing yet another 'building site' on RU-vid. Would Kryten & Bender's genius be improved by merely coating them in 'paint' . . . No! So why try to guild the tinny? : ) xx

Watched holding hands over eyes when you inserted the cloth into the tank opening to take off the paint around the neck Was it going to drop into the tank !!!! You laugh I've seen it done twice now The solution? Heavy piece of fishing line ( 30lbs ) about 1 meter long tie on a fishing treble hook say a size 10 and insert the hook into the same opening them simply roll the tank around its axis a few times ( remembering keep a hold of the other end of the hook line) then slowly withdraw the fishing line and I can guarantee the hook will catch any soft material inside the tank to withdraw it If you fail the first time simply repeat the procedure 100 % guaranteed to remove soft materials from the tank Trust me I've had to do it twice now 🤣

Why not use a less abrasive media in your blast cabinet? Instead of rubbing down all the paintwork?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 года назад
That's not correct, the blast media would leave a textured finish that you'd then have to rub down, the process of rubbing down flattens out imperfections, like the pin stripes and the joint between two different colours of paint... there's no lazy solution to preparing paintwork, it's just hard hand work...

That's for polishing and refining the surface, the sanding media here is designed for dry use, like a non-clogging cloth, and it gives you the chance to feel as you go and get a perfect keyed finish for painting, it's what pro shops do when painting cars wet sanding is for finishing after paint, but when keying up, it's done dry!
