I have now had my Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Explorer for 7 months and have put just over 7000 miles on it in about 4 months for riding. We have winter up here in the Northeast United States. Overall I really love the bike, but of course there are always a few things that could be changed or improved upon. In this video, I get into the details of what I did not make the bike more comfortable for me as well as a few things I don't' like.

Great review Craig, thank you! Re: the cold start issue, I just bought an Indian Springfield and the first thing they told me was, '...wait for the fuel system to pressurize, or it will crank and crank and crank...'

The service manual issue is a big one for me. When BMW made that change, I decided my current BMW will be my last BMW. Sad to hear that Triumph has followed suit. And the aftermarket suppliers are now so far behind on new bikes that they are no longer a valid solution. I don’t have a huge issue with the subscription model, but it should be available on a monthly basis as those of us who aren’t in the repair business should not have to pay for a full-time subscription when they need work on their bike only once or twice a year. I suspect all brands will go that way until we can get a federal right to repair law that stops that nonsense. Policies like this are just the bike maker’s way to ask for more government regulation, which is simply stupid. I am not a fan of more government regulation, but when I see nonsense like this, I support right to repair laws 100%.

We have a right to repair law in Mass, but I am not sure it covers motorcycles and as long as the manual is available to everyone, which it is, then Triumph is compliant. I am not sure about software updates however...

Great review, found myself nodding in agreement regarding many of the points you raise, my GT Pro is fitted with Voigt bar backs it raises and pulls the bars back I’m very happy with the outcome. I solved the bar vibe (not that there is much of it) by fitting Evotech bar end weights they are significantly heavier than the standard offering, I upgraded my seat to a heated seat (Triumph) but on longer journeys I also use a Wild Ass seat cushion (agree the height adjustment is very Micky Mouse but it does work). The instrument binnacle could easily support additional information (permanently), and being programmable would absolutely be desirable, running through menus isn’t especially safe (eyes off road). I’m doing a factory tour next month (U.K.) I might raise the cost of an online service manual (and some of the other points) - they should make it free for the first year these bikes aren’t cheap. I bought mine last spring and only have 2500 miles, but I am having the same experience as you - the bike is flawless. I can live with the trivial things. I need to bring my bars up an inch. Now I'm curious about the two positions Triumph has built in to the bar position. I didn't know about that. Heading out to look at that now. Great video.

Bought mine about the same time as you. The screen display should be completely programmable. It is my biggest disappointment. Personally would prefer Analogue Speedo and Tach. Then screen would be available for more info. I like to have tire pressure continuously displayed.

Hi Craig. I’m Ozzie a 56 YO Triumph “last Explorer” rider from Miami Florida (yes I have to do 500 miles just to get out of our hot and plain swamp!) I’ve been to all continental States as well to all of Easter Canada on my bike. I Just bumped into your channel by the grace of the algorithm and really liked your content for its honest angle of things that are very related to me. I find the real key to be a successful traveler like you say has to do mainly with attitude and also the friends you choose as your road “compadres” (as you mention on your other video). Anyway, love my Tiger 1200 Explorer love traveling long and I’m a officially new subscriber. Thanks for the content.

Great review on the tiger just done 1200kms and goin back Saturday coming for its 1st service can't wait to ring it...have a 10.000km trip coming up so I'm very happy with it so far...my thoughts on the seat think my 2019 tenere 1200 had a better seat but ill no more after this trip....ride safe😎

Yes, waiting a couple of seconds for the fuel pressure to build is very helpful. Opening the throttle does nothing on a fuel injected bike. There is no accelerator pump as in the old carb days. Generally, better to not touch the throttle on an FI vehicle unless really cold and then sometimes the manufacturer will say to just crack the throttle.

4:35. You can get a 30mm one from Motech which is the limit without lengthening the cables. Motech also have a 40mm one.

Hi Craig, great review. thank you 👍 i got à GT pro since six mons ago, i ride in France, most time, on twisty roads. And for me, i notice to points : fuel consumption is around 6.5 to 7 L / 100 km 😮 and foot pegs are very very tired 🤕

I wrote triumph and asked about warranty issues being affected by myself doing maint and they said no just keep records of what was done, I would think its the same w the battery charger, harley tried to scare riders w that bull and got a fine for it. I know if you purchase an item for the bike you can go on triumph and enter the part number and the instructions will come up, maybe try putting the part number of wheels or something and see what comes up otherwise a sub to the serv manual is not bad. Paid 250.00 for my harley touring manual! I have the rally pro, did the first oil change at 550 miles and have enjoyed the bike, tft issues are the same, be nice to have what i want up there but you can ride w the trip on which is pretty big but doable. Brilliant review. i agree with you on the TFT screen. i had the 900 gt pro version before the 1200 gt pro i have now and to be honest i preferred the 900 TFT screen. you could get a lot of information on the one screen and i liked it that you had a day mode and night mode or an automatic mode, which gave you a white screen in the day if you wanted. you have no choice on the 1200 version with reference to the battery charger in the UK the Triumph version was £89 they are made by optimate and i picked up the same charger without triumph written on it for £59. i do however keep it plugged in when not in use and after watching your vid i will now stop doing that. The shop have sold you the dual bank version of the battery tender. Triumph do a smaller Triumph Branded Optimate Duo 2A in Europe which is half the price/size of that battery tender you have there, It does Lead Acid & LIFEPO4/LFP. You can leave it connected, it knows if it is on a LIFEPO battery system and acts accordingly, the packaging specifically says it is safe to leave connected. Duo stands for lead 12v and Lithium 12.8v. I also thought you can leave the information tray visible to the right of the dash on the display of your choice, e.g. damping or trip etc?

6:40 yes I wouldn't mind a wider screen. Height is fine. No buffeting but I get wind coming in from the sides. I also have a big cruiser with a big screen which gives more protection, but it also has more buffeting.

I ended up buying the puig extending/ collapsing levers but same problem only the brake side will get closer but not the clutch side because they are hydraulic and not cable operated. I do need risers or something in the future. And will definitely change the tire out for something better eventually. I have only done about 3k miles on mine so far. I had a coolant leak and a fuel cap issue which both were warranty fixes and seems to be quality issues.

Thanks, hey you look taller on TV, lol. I'm the same height as you and same inseam, this is some great info thank you. My 2007 Kawasaki Vulcan classic 1600 is in the shop I think I'll sell it. I may end up with the same triumph. I work 8 Day stretches for a railroad. This will be different than pulling my bushtec behind the vision.

Great review. I bought the same bike, only in black. Your reviews certainly played a part in my decision. One thing that I think would be interesting to Explorer model owners would be a video on how to remove the side panels for accessory wiring. This simply doesn’t exist for the 2022/23 Explorer line on RU-vid. Thanks as always for the informative videos you create!

I have the same bike and broadly agree with your comments. A configurable TFT would be nice. Here in the UK we have a first 600 mile service/oil change and you don’t mention this being done which surprised me for the warranty but maybe it’s different in the US. I have don’t 2000 miles and counting so far….Happy riding!

risers, I prefer to use the 2 inch ROX anti vibe risers. swing em back a bit which should work with that stem setup and tank. plus the anti vibe risers will quell some of the vibes in the bars. for the seat an alaska leather sheepskin works great for cooling and heating and covers a multitude of seat fitting ills.

Very fair update. I’m loving mine, and for the most part agree on everything you said. Especially about the TFT and the number of clicks to get info. Overall though I am completed satisfied with my 23 Explorer. Ride safe.

Regarding the service manual, I've worked for Chrysler product dealers for 45 years, and over 10 years ago, they stopped shipping service manuals to dealers, because everything was online. So if a customer wanted to buy a manual at that time, it would cost about $300. Since the factory no longer automatically printed 3,000 of them for dealers, and it's really a rare individual that wanted to buy one, the cost to print each manual went way, way up, and a few years later they went to a subscription-based manual as well. I think you can get access for a day, a month, or a year, all at different price levels. It's just the way of the world!

I have never had that oil problem you mentioned but the fix seems easy. As for the starting I was told by the best Victory tuner around to let the fuel pump prime, give it a quick 1/4 turn and then it will fire right up. Sure this is a Triumph but I have done it that way and not had a problem, when I don't, I have issues. He also said not to be a HOAR! (Hop On And Ride), always give the bike at least 30 seconds to a minute to warm up. I just decided that I might do the odd oil change but I was just going to let the dealer service it. I can afford a $30k bike so I can afford the service from them. Like I said before, I got the Givi Touring windscreen and it has made a huge difference, but I am also 6'. Overall I have no complaints on my bike and knowing what I know now, I would buy the same bike.

Turn the handlebar mount, a 180 degree turn. For me it made all the difference!!! Suddenly the motorcycle is controlled, comfortable and feels very ergonomic. I am not 1.73 meters tall and the original chair is in a low position.

I like the seat adjuster on my BMW. Just raise the seat on its hinge, flip a lever, lower the seat to latch it again. Easy Peasy. If only everything on the BMW was as nicely engineered. 😁

I just realized the glasses match the bike! One thing I'm wondering is whether you would advise someone of similar height/size to get the regular GT model or the GT Explorer. Like you, I tend to stop every 100-150 miles on a trip, and so I'm not sure when I would need the extra range of the Explorer model. And in most other circumstances, the smaller tank/lighter weight would be an advantage.

Pun intended, I think you just have to weigh the pros and cons. The 8 gallon tank is a bit heavier if you fill it all the way--I always do. You could run six gallons in it if you wanted to lighten this up, but I find having a 300 miles range is great for peace if mind. Even though I stop ever 100 or so, it does not always need to be at a gas station. When I get into those situations where I am in the middle of nowhere or have more than 200 miles between fuel stations, it is no longer a concern, nor do I need to take a long an extra container. With all that said, 6 gallons is plenty for most situations and the pro version is lighter and cheaper. If the weight is a concern, go for the Pro version and carry an extra gallon of gas in those rare 200 plus mile situations.

This was my thought too when I went for the gt pro. I heard the explorer has a little bit better wind/rain protection for the legs, but pro also has benefits like more stable mirrors and lighter. I'm happy with my fuel range so far. Can recommend the gt pro. I fitted the givi windshield on mine , because I felt the buffetting wasn't ok on highways.

No oil consumption at all. I was offered the extended warranty and I have a year to get it. Will probably do that. Extends it 4 years, so you get 7 total...at least I believe that was it. About $1800.

Check out Helibars out of Maine for Risers that go up 1 and back 1. They are on the verge of releasing for 2023 triumph tiger explorer bikes. Did not know triumph built some adjustments in the standard offering. I will ask during my first service

There is only one layout available as far as I know. You can change the theme (color) but the basic layout remains the same. Each sub menu has different info. There is a work around in that you can move to the trip meter and then use the home button to toggle back and forth, but still you should not have to do that. You can charge from the front accessory port, but I have a pigtail on the battery.

@@LivingOffTheSlab I believe you can change the layout too from video I have seen. One i have seen makes the GPS bigger. That could of been the Tiger 900 though I also seen in the user manual torque setting too

I think we are talking about two different things. What they have done in the video is navigate into the menu structure to bring up the fuel consumption. You can ride around like that and even use the "home" button on the right control pod to toggle back and forth between it and the main screen. This is a kind of work a round for burying everything so deep with the menu, but I still think the trip meter should be available on the main screen. Regardless, this is the way it is and I will just have to deal with it.

Try this link. voigt-mt.de/Handlebar-risers-30mm-for-Triumph-Tiger-1200-GT-EXPLORER-2022 If you move the bars back using the stock positions then add the 30mm risers, you will not need to change the cables. SW Motec also sells a similar product. Look on their website.

I get the same buzz on my 900 Tiger. Put some Puig shorty levers and HeliBar risers on mine. Stock tires are fine for the 900 on road, but off-road they are hot garbage! I put the same adventure tiers on. Do yours sing? Mine get noticeably noisy around 70pmh, but quiet down over.

Hello. Thank you for the update. I tested a 1200 GT Pro a couple of weeks ago and apart from the vibration, the bike is perfect for me. The vibration is a problem though and it really bothered me when cruising 70-80 mph. Do you know of any way to reduce it? I know that you said it doesn’t bother you, but it’s stopping me from buying what is otherwise, a perfect bike.

I have seen heavier bar ends from a UK company, don't remember the name right now, but when I checked the website they were out of stock. Might try those on the future to see if they make a difference. For the seat, I don't know. Maybe a pad or a gell seat might lesson it. So far I have just gotten used to it and don't really notice it anymore.

I have the GT Pro version and when i first had it i found the vibration was a bit bothering, but after i had the first service the vibration has gone away. there is a bit of buzzing beyond 70mph but it doesn't bother me. i don't know if the bikes are slightly different in any way depending where you are in the world. I'm in the UK

What does Kathy think of it? Pillion experience, looks, your looks on it 😉? When, in 2015 I rented a TT 🐅 from Albuquerque Harley, and rode 2000 miles down and up the state, I found it to be the best adv tourer I had ridden. While BMW had the better control buttons and creature comforts, in ergonomics, transmission, gearing, power delivery, engine sound, and road feedback, the scion of Hinkley was the master. In power delivery, I think Triumph is still the best in class.

Hi can I just ask when you moved your handlebars to the setting closer to the tank did you have any issues with the electronic steering lock. I moved mine today but found the steering lock wouldn’t engage so I moved them back again and it worked. Any thoughts thanks.

I had a issue once, but I think that was before I moved it. It locked fine but I had difficulty getting it to unlock. Have not tried it since I moved it.

G’day mate I was told by the dealer when I brought my 1200 rally pro there were owners who had trouble with starting the bike,apparently Triumph has said it’s due to running premium fuel (98)and you should use 91 unleaded,and agree with the tft not enough information without looking for it

Regarding the levers: I detest the Magura levers that come with the new 1200s. I have a set of ASV shorty levers on my 2023 Tiger 1200 Rally Pro, and I'm very happy with them. I suggest contacting ASV directly to ensure you get the right levers and the right fitment. It's different than for previous gen Tiger 1200s. (The Tigers used to use Brembo master cylinders, but this gen switched to Magura). I completely agree about the functionality of the new TFT. It's a beautiful gauge, but the functionality is a major step backwards.

13:30. Only thing I'd like to see all the time is the TPMS. If you use the trip meter all the time then one left flick returns to the last screen used which will be the trip meter.

But there would also be a separate warning alert on the TFT if pressure dropped below the threshold on the TPMS system so you'll never be caught out.

If you stop every 150 miles or so, what is the advantage of the GT explorer over the GT? I've owned a couple of R1200GS and the adventure to me was too much.

I thought the same thing before I bought it. Now seeing that 300 mile range is reassuring. When I go up north this summer, the 200 mile distances between fuel stops is not a big deal and I don't need to carry extra fuel.

Second time watching the seat issue and it got me thinking. The owners manual says to remove the battery when the bike will not be ridden for a couple weeks, especially when it's cold. Maybe I should insist the dealership that's closest to me keep them in stock. Did you have rideability issues when it broke? My longest trip was just over 400 miles each way. Left early one morning in a warm rain and returned early the next morning in sub freezing temps, but thankfully no wet stuff. Should have stopped to add a layer under the chest area, but survived. I'd put on a Puig deflector on before the ride, but haven't really tested it out with different positions. It's not movable much while riding which is a downfall in my mind.

We share the biggest complaint, the display programming on the TFT. I can't see it being too difficult for the Triumph engineers to modify the display to show Trip, Odo, and maybe some other user configurable items. I have the same Blue GTEx. So far I have added a Givi tall screen and had a Russell Day-Long seat made.

I thought about a day long, but I am concerned that it will raise the height of the seat...which I don't need. What is your experience?

@@LivingOffTheSlab The Day-Long will definitely raise the height. I have a 32 inseam and it is at the max for me. The new lowering feature on the Tiger makes a huge difference. The Day-Long is simply the best seat out there but only if it works in your situation.

No Problems with load change? I recognized on a test drive that the Drive shaft seems not tight and a shock goes through the bike wenn giving throttle. Sorry for my bad English 😅

The drive shaft does respond differently than a chain, but I don't notice any extreme lash. If you let off the gas ubruptly then it can bump pretty gone.

8:30 The vibes are nowhere near as much as my big 2 cylinder so I don't notice it on the Tiger. Coming from a 4 cyl then yes, you might notice it.

I got one too. I wish it had a little storage space. Even enough for a pair of gloves and glasses or a tool kit. But there is nothing. Not even a cubby hole or small space under the seat. A touring bike with zero stock storage?

Appreciate the review my friend. The buzz is real, *and that challenging menu business is just a mess. First, there is a difference between “regular cold”, and “Old Man Cold”. I get Old Man Cold”. 😅 Bike: 23’ Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro. (Added heated seats)❤ I noticed the cold wind making its way around the sides of my wind shield as well. Hits me in the upper arms/shoulders, and edges of my chest. I didn’t want to become the Michelin Man on the bike so I checked my options. Solution: Keis heated apparel. Specifically the Premium EXTREME J505RP (no armor)! It’s made to be a mid layer underneath a dedicated moto jacket, but can easily be a stand alone off the bike. Great quality piece and super warm as is. I connect straight to the battery - it comes with a controller and a battery lead. It can connect to a PDM as well. I plan on grabbing their most recent heated gloves soon. It’s actually at the heart of a complete system that can connect gloves, pants, socks, and even insoles if you so desire. Purchased for $235, from the UK, shipping is a bit much $40. But when I got the jacket (NYS) in less than a week I was okay with the charge. It helps me, it may help you.

I'm going through the comments, and seems I'm the only one being driven mad by a couple really petty things that should be fixed in a software update. #1. The fog lights turn off everytime the engine is off. Not too bad, but they also turn off whenever you use the high beams. Even if you use the high beams just to flash some one, the fog lights get turned off, and I have to remember to turn it back on. #2. The bike has to be completely stopped to put into off-road mode (and vice versa). So if you are with a group going from road to unpaved, you are having to stop completely to switch to off-road. I should mention that I love the bike. The positive far outweighs the negative. I rented a GS for a week before I got this bike, and while a great bike, the on-road feel and response is incomparable to the Tiger 1200. Even with the 21" wheel of the Rally version- which I was afraid would detract from on-road manners.

I agree, I wish the fog lights would stay on when you turn the bike off. I understand why they go off with the high beams as it is technically illegal (in most states anyway) to run with both. But I did add additional amber lights and they stay on all the time.

I find this really disappointing from triumph. No customer service manual and a $200 battery charger with triumph written on it. I bought a lithium specific charger to use on my Africa Twin from optimate here in the uk for the equivalent of $35. I know that triumph have always been expensive on the servicing, but this doesn’t do anything to encourage me to buy one.

I love your videos. You are smart, poetic and eloquent. I learnt from you many things about bikes and trips. American expressions too, such as "living off the slab" and "monkey butt". I am not American speaker. The unique thing I don't like about you is the beard. Although your white beard is prestigious cute, it prevent me from reading the expression of your face while talking. Let me give you a hint : people struggling with a foreign language like myself get some help to decipher the pronunciation from the face movement. If you hide your face that's no help. There is no problem while riding or not talking directly to the camera though. Unless you want talk only to Americans take the beard out. The rest of it is perfect no change please. You are amazingly inspirational. Keep the good work.

I guess that depends on your perspective. More power, better brakes, better suspension, bigger gas tank, cornering abs and traction control. With all that, they both are good bikes and do the job.

Hey Craig, great review, as usual. It struck me while watching you talk about seat and ride height, how important it is for new bike owners to check their SAG before making adjustments to their seats, or buying new ones, even possibly buying a new shock. Hey Rick, good point. It really depends on the bike you are riding and what tech it has on it. On my WR250, it is very important because all of the adjustment is manual. On this bike however everything is electronic. You set the desired damping (comfort, sport, off road) and it adjusts the preload for you based on the weight you are carrying. Of course this can affect the seat height. I have read of some riders setting the suspension in off road mode, because it effectively Lowes the bike. Have not tried this myself. I have been using comfort mode for a nice plush ride and letting the bike do its thing. So far so good.

I am happy for you and your Triumph. I hope you have many happy miles on it. If I had so many issues in the first 7000 miles (broken seat, oil leak from day one that the dealer won't acknowledge, non user friendly TFT screen, poor starting when cold). I would find myself at the BMW dealer, Honda Powersport or maybe the Harley Dealer first thing Tuesday morning with my checkbook open asking them to sell me a BMW GSA 1250, Africa Twin or maybe the Pan America. Way too many issues with a very expensive motorcycle and the dealer won't even give you a $0.50 oil ring to fix a known problem. That doesn't bode well with me.

Gosh you wouldn't be happy with BMW then if you are going to be upset at a broken rubber piece and an undersized o-ring on a filler. My 2023 GS turned up without the heated rider and passenger seat and it was "hard luck", there is a shortage. Not a penny off the bike, take it or leave it.

@@XRPerro I was just wondering if you felt a certain temperature was too cold to ride. I will ride unless there is a potential for Ice on the road that I cannot see. If it's just cold and dry I have always ridden if the bike would start.

That is a crappy charger if you can’t leave it connected. High quality chargers have intelligence and will only charge the battery periodically.

According to the charger documentation it will maintain the battery and should not have to unhook it. But, the dealer is advising me not to leave it hooked up. I honestly need to do more research to find out if their concerns are valid.

My friend has owned a battery shop for 30+ years. He told me to hook up the charger before a ride and to not leave it hooked up all the time. My batteries have lasted longer since he told me that.

@@jimperry4420 He’s playing an old tape from the chargers of days gone by. I own 4 BatteryMINDer brand chargers and use them all winter on my motorcycles, ATV and lawn tractor. I just had to replace my lawn tractor battery after 13 years of service. It seems it didn’t mind have the maintainer connected for 5 months of the year.

I did see the follow up video after I commented on the previous video, we have a saying you don’t get anything for nothing, , that’s a fact with the cost of purchasing a bike and the running costs afterwards, of these new Triumphs it’s getting ridiculous, I’ve been looking at the Triumph 1200 but I’m shocked at the ownership costs for a service especially when they say 10.000 miles or 1 year service interval which ever comes first , my Kawasaki has just past 18.000 miles.six and a half years old,I’d be paying every year for annual service that’s isn’t really needed average of 3000 yearly, love the look of the your Triumph great videos 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿-🇬🇧 👍🏻
