Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro review - the perfect everyday bike?

The Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro is a seriously posh middleweight adventure bike that gives you all the toys you need but without a ludicrous amount of power. Is it perfect for the road? Or should you stump up a bit more cash and get a big-capacity adventure bike? Join me for a full walkaround and ride on country roads and dual carriageways to see if it's any good.

I have had this bike for 6 months. I came to a conclusion, that this bike could easily compete to become an over all perfect bike, at least in ADV category. Power is spot on on a normal conditions (road and off road riding, not track days), it is great for filtering in London once you get used to the size of it, wind protection is really good, it is very comfortable and comes with more features than you would ever need. If you are going to have only 1 bike, this is a very serious contender. it can do almost everything and it will do it very well. I did touring in the Alps, it took lots of luggage, handled the twistiness of Stelvio and several more passes with no issues what so ever and left a lot of smile on my face every day. I would chose it above Tenere, KTM's, BMW's and even Africa Twin. Triumphs reliability is not as legendary as the big 4 from Japan, but it is for sure good enough. The only bike I could potentially choose over it could be Tenere 900 if it will ever be built. The engine from MT09 mixed with Yamahas experience with Tenere 700 and a need to compete with better specs bikes could end up with a proper beast.

Wow, good to hear. This is my next bike. I'll take it down to Northern Baja and go anywhere I want. However...I'm quite sure 80% of my riding will be street and highways...which this will be pretty comfy for long hauls I think.

What an enjoyable, amusing, concise and informative review! I used to ride a beaten up old XTZ750 all over the UK for a few years and I absolutely loved it even though it was heavy and underpowered and made my wrists ache. That Tiger would be pure unadulterated luxury for me. I think Triumph have struck just the right chord with it in terms of size, power and character.

I have the 900 GT Low version of the Tiger. It does not come with heated seats (and there is no Low - Pro version) but it has the switch on the grip and connecters under the seat already installed. Just lift of the old seat, drop in the new one, attach the connector and it's ready. Thank you Triumph for making this easy.

Very high quality review with highly professional smooth presentation. Congratulations. Lots of useful points, but the more important by far for myself as a 6'2" rider was the fairing. Triumph really got that right it seems by your comments and comparisons with the competitors' screens. Pity other manufacturers don't realise the positive impact of putting a slot in the right place to allow air to flow up the inside of the screen to cut turbulence.

The wind buffeting is probably the single most important thing, along with the 6th gear ratio and engine RPM's at 70mph. Strangely, the engine RPM's and wind protection, are almost an afterthought. I'm extremely disapointed in motorcycle reviewers. It's the reviewers who determine what features motorcycles have. The engineers listen to the critics. But strangely, there aren't any critics! Reviewers just give every single motorcycle a favorable review, even if it has horrible wind protection and no 6th gear, and is turning 5,200 rpms at 50 mph. Every review I've ever watched gives glowing praise to bikes with improper gear ratios, and no overdrive. Every modern motorcycle should have overdrive.

I’m 6’2” on a 2016 KLR. I struggle most days to find any way to reduce buffeting. I loved the comments here as I’ve been dreaming of finding another bike with a cocoon of comfort. This may not be a cocoon, but much more my taste than the Goldwing, Concours, or R1250RT I’ve been dreaming about. In the adventure bike world, the GS is the only bike I’ve regularly seen given props for wind protection.

Good review. There are more standard upscale features that you missed, like the self-cancelling turnsignals and the tubeless spoked wheels, the fog lights, tire pressure monitoring, and powered suspension adjustment. Just something worthwhile mentioning since the KTM 890 and the Ducati Multistrada were mentioned.

I did at first too. HORRIBLE design from some millenial "game" software UI developer. VERY poor use of screen space, regardless of the "mode". You do get used to it though, because you HAVE TO. That said, the TFT/Bluetooth package clearly proves that Triumph is NOT a very good software company. It's pretty half assed for the money. Almost ZERO compatability testing with peripherals (Go-Pro, phones etc.) And ZERO dealer knowledge or customer support. Verry 1990's.

I love my 900 GT Pro that I took delivery of last June, a great bike. The only niggle is that you set up the bike with the electronic damping, heated grips and seat but when you call for petrol and switch off, all the settings are cancelled and you have to reset everything again in the garage forecourt. I am 5ft 9in and no problem with the seat height.
@Ritalie
@Ritalie 2 года назад
Can you explain this again in American? Lol. I didn't understand what you were saying. Your terminology is a bit different. Forecourt? Call for petrol? What exactly do these terms mean? I've never heard these terms before. How do you like the "T-Plane" crankshaft? Is the engine buzzy at high speeds? In the USA, if you travel anywhere, you most likely have to travel at high speed on long flat roads. I feel like modern motorcycles are just not designed for actual extended highway use. Modern gear ratios seem to be designed around closed course race tracks at wide open throttle. When you're only using light throttle, the super low gear ratios on motorcycles are not particularly helpful.

@Ritalie
@Ritalie 2 года назад
It's the most beautiful ADV bike. The Tiger has it all, and the triple engine is the best configuration. But I feel like they maybe shot themselves in the foot with switching the crankshaft to an uneven firing interval. Now the engine fires at random intervals, instead of evenly spaced, regular intervals. Their triple engines were highly regarded, and the change to a T-Plane crank seems almost like an impulsive and reckless engineering decision. Normal bike manufacturers wouldn't completely abandon their most highly regarded engine, that is well loved by the community, in order to try to mimic someone else? I feel like Triumph was jealous of the Harley Pan America sales, and the Honda Africa Twin and especially the Yamaha Tenere 700 with it's own "T Plane" 270 degree "lumpy" sound. Triumph wanted to get in on the "lumpy" sound, although they didn't need to do that!

@timrodierides 2 года назад
It's a weird one - there's a big gap in the middle of the Route Napoleon where it sort of disappears and you end up on motorways for a bit... I tend to start near Grenoble, then follow the N85 to La Mure, and stay on it all the way to Gap. Then it gets boring - so just head via whichever twisty route you favour towards Digne. Then hop back on the N85 as it twists south. I like both bits of it!

@murdocampbell4858
@murdocampbell4858 2 года назад
Hi Ritalie. I have a green one, and I love it. I’m 6 ft tall, and I find the bike very relaxed at 70mph. Not sure what revs it’s running at that speed (and I can’t check for you because there’s SNOW 😩 outside), but I can say that the wind protection, for me, is perfect: no buffeting at all at the highest setting. I get no vibes at that speed either, although if you really search for them they are there, but not in a bad way. I find it very addictive. I can sit ALL DAY on mine, although I use one of those air-cushion seat pads….BLISS. Suffered hellish bum-ache without it! Also, I reckon the RPM levels must be decent because I’m achieving over 60 mpg, and I don’t hang about! Downsides? Not keen on the 55 inch screen television in front of me, and it badly needs a hugger: the whole back end gets FILTHY! Hope that all helps…….ride safe buddy!
@S2Wiley
@S2Wiley 2 года назад
Theres a SMALL vibration in the torque curve at around 4200rpm (firing order/torque related), but above that its traditional triple smooth. Previous 800 or Triumph triple owners will feel it more than someone coming from a V-twin. With a 46t rear sprocket *(OEM), you won't get additional vibration until around 85mph. Very easy to dampen with a few silicone shims. Anyone claiming "too much" vibration should probably test on various road surfaces instead of automatically attributing to the bike.

Hej.

Keep putting everything down to the T plane crank. I expect it's because it's 900cc now. I bet an 800cc with the T plane crank would have nothing. No extra torque, no urgency. And pulling 40mph in 6th is no big deal for a 900cc bike.

ALL triples have loads of low end torque. The T-Plane holds the grunt longer. A equal firing triple spins up too fast for many off road riders, which is why the change from the 800. "Tractability" plus lower geometry.

Triumph’s dash display is utter rubbish! Too fiddly and fussy, pastel shade colours, the last decent display was on the 2020 Speed triple RS, every one has been terrible ever since, enough to stop me buying any of them 🤷🏻‍♂️!
