The smart thing to do with this is to take the same photo and make subtle and terrifying changes to it over the course of the entire two years to make the person feel like they're going insane or the thing is haunted.

I thought that was the idea... Get a group pic and start changing things moving people around, adding famous people, putting weird hats every day. Someone did that manually swapping the picture every day until their parents noticed, can't find the video.

This may me a case of: In Poker, you can't bluff a player who doesn't know the value of the cards. Meaning unless she follows along tech, she can't judge how special this is. There's smartphones, there's smart-homes that control themselves, there are AI voice assisants. A photo frame that changes pictures will not shock such a user.

@@Melian_Dialogue Dude, you and all the people saying "don't make your mom think she's got memory/congnitive issues, that's a mean thing to do" can really shut up. Don't you realise this kind of "joke" can be played on almost anybody? It's not made extra funny just because you do it to an older person. Literally most normal people aren't thinking that, I've only seen it mentioned in comments criticising the joke! There are some "stars" that need to line up for this to work, namely you need someone who would appreciate such a gift in the first place, and actually still puts up pictures around the house, but someone that's not gonna fuss over matching styles and reframing the photo, etc etc. A mom makes perfect sense for this kind of thing... and sure you get some wholesome points for it too, but the joke works just as well if it were some 22 y/o doing it to their 49 y/o mom, no need to have connotations of "going senile". You and others are just fabricating that, because it seems you can't fathom such a joke being ok?

@wiiu7640
@wiiu7640 Год назад
@@kurtlamprecht93 No you haven't. The reason why you couldn't store all your memories in your house is because you were unable to frame every picture. technically you can have a photo album or box of photos, but what I'm saying is very different. You don't really have all of your memories when it's in a box or the hard drive of a computer. Having an e-inc display for photos gives you some of those memories back because otherwise they would be collecting dust or taking up storage on your phone or something like that. You are right, but if you're going to go that far you could easily say that the only place where all of your memories are stored is your brain.

I like your attempt at trying to do a kind of profiling of the displayed colors through photographing it at around 04:55 - Color calibration and color management is a deep rabbit hole and I appreciate you including this in the video. I think the flaw was that what you did would be only useful at providing the palette for a soft proofing profile on your LC or Oled display of your computer. To extract the display-able colors you would have to measure them under a known light source and also correct for the reflectance of the display (this is why your black levels where off and looked washed out). Nonetheless a very exciting project 😍👍
@CNLohr
@CNLohr Год назад
I think the biggest issue was that I cannot accurately display the colors because they are not as vivid. So, doing it the way I landed on provides the "most" vividness that can be done without supersaturation.
@shompy12
@shompy12 Год назад
Yes exactly. This is because the gamut volume of the display is far smaller because it is based on subtractive color science and not additive. Meaning it can only reflect light and not produce it like say an Oled panel. This is also why printing color spaces are narrower than display color spaces. So soft proofing is used on the display to simulate the narrower space of a printing medium. Additionally, you are basically working with a kind of 3bit display 😂 so only 1 bit for brightness info and 2bits for the shades and then using dithering to trick the eye into seeing colors that are not there. But actually using the palette you derived from the picture you took in the conversion algorithm would basically be a way to soft proof or simulate, what the final picture would look under the specific lighting conditions you took the photo under. So you could technically use it in extreme cases to then adjust the original picture (say you observed severe banding on the eInk display and wanted to adjust the picture before converting it again), then simulate the output on your pc monitor without the need to send it to your mum to put it on the display, maybe tweak it again and then use the 'optimal' palette on the picture for the final conversion. Anyways this is a great example of color spaces and working with limited color volume 👍

I think for a lot of people the thought of losing their grip on reality is their greatest fear, so that being said giving your mom a picture frame that makes her think she's crazy is....hilarious. So long as you eventually reveal the secret to her!

Love this idea, any thoughts on how to tie this in with something like a Google photos album? Additional steps would be to connect to wifi, download the new image and then process it. I wonder what additional power consumption would be?
@CNLohr

Considering the ESP8266 does great deep sleep, you could probably make it last a loong time. That said, this uses a little less power.

That's pretty sweet. A minor thing you could improve in your videos is to use a pop filter for the microphone. Some of the "P"s in (e.g. in "paper") put a bit of pressure on the ears.

@fen4ri

LOL that's barely a prank at all, just a surprising gift! I thought for sure at first that this is a prime scenario for photo-shopping a ghost into the background of a normal picture, and it only appears on some nights of the week. Otherwise it could look like just a static photo. or maybe the facial expressions get changed sometimes. Something subtle like that would be a really funny but long term prank.

Should've gone for the long con. Letting it "settle in" to its new environment would help lower suspicion for when it does finally change, and lower its chance of discovery.

If it was me I'd take a photo of a group of 20 people and photoshop multiple iterations until eventually no one was left. Each night it would update and someone would vanish from the frame, like a Soviet-era purge.
