James Holst and PJ Vick head to Lake Erie to fish the western basin for walleyes. They experience an awesome bite where they found success pulling snap weights and Rapala Husky Jerks, as well as long lining Scatter Rap Tail Dancers.

There’s a lot of bait companies out there but Rapala products straight up catch fish. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Tail Dancer, Original Floater, Husky Jerk, Rippin Rap, Jigging Rap, Scatter Rap… they just catch fish. 👍

I fished the western basin for decades. I watched it die as a boy , pea green soup all the way to little chick. Thank god i watched her come back and in the 70s and 80s you could troll 20 miles and pretty have non stop hookups. Erie and her eye's are hard to beat

Agreed. Erie is a very special walleye fishery. We're glad you got to see it come back from its low point.

Trolling goes pretty good got lots of fish around… the jig bite is where it’s at… way better fight and there’s just something special about having the pole in your hands and feeling the bite!

20/20 on the outside (assuming you want high baits outside, deep baits inside). You’re calling this “Western Basin”, but you’re actually between the Western and Central Basins; looks like you launched out of Catawba and set lines on the East side of Kelley’s Island. The weather was very good to you; as were the fish too!

Awesome video! Flat calm mid March to mid April days are truly special on Erie! Any reason why you long lined the scatter raps and didn’t run them behind the weight?
@stevenwalker9013
@stevenwalker9013 2 года назад
They dive deeper than husky jerks. I’m assuming on braid there was no need
@InDepthOutdoorsTV
@InDepthOutdoorsTV 2 года назад
This is correct. We could get the running depth we wanted without adding snap weights so we long that particular crank and ran the #12 Deep Husky Jerks behind the snap weights.

Great video ! Couple questions : 1) was this early April ? Not sure how you got that flat water day ? Ha. 2) Do you use a leader ? How long? Flouro ? Or tie braid / or mono right to the snap or lure? Thx for your reply.
@InDepthOutdoorsTV
@InDepthOutdoorsTV 2 года назад
I think we filmed this one April 14. Yes, we use a 4-6 foot fluoro leader. #12 Sufix.

So, using this method, how do you know what depth your lures are, other than just a guess? 20, 30, 35, then 2 Oz weight, but no idea where the baits are... Why not use the 50/2 method and know exactly where they are?
@sylvainlaurence1554
@sylvainlaurence1554 Год назад
You know where they are when they hit the bottom,after that just shortened your line,remember how much line when you start and adjust all day long.After a couple of days working it You will know how much line out before putting your snap weight.It’s the difference between practice and theoretical with 50/2

The longer I watch In Depth Outdoors, the more I realize fishing has evolved into a wealthy persons pass time. I'm curious if you would be interested in laying our the total investment you described having at your disposal, boat, motors, electronics, line(s), rod & reels, lures and we haven't even begun to consider vehicle, trailer or clothing. It is humbling to consider as I near my 80th year on this earth, how meager my investment in a 1968 Alumacraft F7, a 5 HP Mercury 4 stroke, yup, spent a stimulus check on a new boat motor, but I still rely on the olt Vexilar FL8 for locating a piscatorial specimen and reading the bottom. Oh ya, I gotta trollin' motor, itsa Minn Kota Endura Max 40. Come to think of it, makes me look kinda cheap, huh? I'd prefer frugal, sounds a bit more sofisticated. Well, my investment, until I bought that new 5 horse was two heifers and a tuff old steer and that's no bull. But don't worry, James, I'm still gonna watch In Depth Outdoors cause when my ship comes in I'm gonna keep on using what I have but maybe buy a bigger screen so I can better see what you're using to catch those fishies. 😊😊😊

Hey Kenny, boats don't catch fish. Anglers catch fish. A big fancy boat does allow us to fish on marginal days, carry more people or get to a fishing spot in less time but it certainly doesn't make the fish bite.

Man, I have an 18ft 1969 starrcraft holiday. I pick up gear here and there and I still enjoy drifting on nice days, throwing Erie Dearies and Nuggets. Yes things have changed but older methods still get the job done.

You sure can spend a lot of cash, but don't have to. Put into it only as much as you want, or can afford. To that 8 yr old kid that rides his bike to the creek with a can of hand picked worms, you have spent a fortune. But the time on the water along with the thrill of feeling that strike and knowing you put the pieces of the puzzle together, are the same for all of us. Just depends on how and where you want to play the game.

@@TW14137 I was that kid that walked a block with my tackle box, rod, worms and transistor radio to sit on the shore for hours every day. Best memories ever.
