This week we're are playing a very interesting project in Biel, using romantic trombones built by Egger (www.eggerinstruments.ch), in cooperation with Hochschule der Künste Bern and Romantic Brass Symposium. Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn (www.tobs.ch) will perform a symphony concert together with Ian Bousfield as soloist... here you are a little introduction :-)

With the sound and blend you get for those horns it makes you wonder why we changed that standerd of trombones for that kind of rep....it was like one Organ, pure magic

I think it has something to do with the growing demand for that big deep sound. Based on my observation with how I see Trombones evolved from the Sackbut, to the romantic Trombones, to modern Trombones, the bells getting bigger, the bore getting bigger, and with the addition of the F valve on the Tenor and additional valves on the Bass, and based on the phat low sound we hear on film scores these days, I think that’s the shift that we’re seeing. From these instruments that could blend lush chorale harmonies, eventually led to this newfound importance to honking low notes. On one hand, yaay innovation, but on the other hand, it’s slowly sacrificing the ability of the Trombone to sound so lush and blend well, playing in a lush tenor range. When I listen to recordings of Sackbuts, they have a smaller and more delicate sound compared to its larger modern counterpart which is designed for honk honk all day.

The greatest rendition of the Rhenish I’ve heard since Friedman-Crisafulli-Kleinhammer recorded it with Barenboim and the CSO in the early 80s. What a glorious sound!

Hi! Section sounds incredible. May I ask you to do video on difference and specific differences between universal and german trombones. Can’t really find any easy explanation.

It would be great to do many of these videos... The problem is always the same: time and money (a good hall costs quite a bit)

I LOVE this sound. Both the combination of the instruments and fantastic players. Thank you so much for posting this. What settings did you use on the Zoom to get such a full sound?

Thanks for your comment! I put the Zoom H2n on the conductor's stand using MS recording +3 to capture more of the natural sound in the hall.
