Air creates the sound just remember that. He's right, don't try to push out the high notes etc.. It's the air, not making some weird embouchure. I like your sound and how you explain things.

Hey Christopher Bill! I just wanted you to know I am having favorable results with range development. F above the staff in first position was my comfort range. I can now play notes like high G, high A, and high Bb in phrases or in concert with other notes. I am continuously working on increasing my range as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Keep making quality videos.

I have been doing these exercises for a month and a half and when i started i could shakely hit an F (two ledger line above bass clef) now I can shakely hit the D above that! It's amazing how far ive come. Ill be the envy of all the brass players in my high school band.

Thanks, I've been looking for something like this forever; I've found that I can hit notes like high c and d comfortably, but I have trouble locking onto the B-flat for some reason and this should help me be a bit more comfortable in that range

Hey Chris! My first marching season in high school has just ended at the start of my fourth year on trombone, and I am switching to bass trombone. I am incredibly excited, and will start next semester, and my range has increased on the lower register exponentially. There is only one problem. I still can not confidently hit a pedal F. I have worked my range very often for a decently long time now, trying to do it once a day, and I can not hit it yet. Do you have any tips other than these specific range exercises?

@NotSkilledHere
@NotSkilledHere 10 лет назад
great video!! I do have a question though. Im in high school and can occasionally hit the high f or extreme pedal tones, but I tend to shift my lips around as i go up to hit the high notes and evolve into using only one lip for my pedal tones. Is that acceptable or should I work to correct that. My teacher says it sounds fine and seems content to leave it where it is for now, but should I focus on changing that so that I don't have to move my lips or mouthpiece on my face so much? granted the horn never truly does leave my face. thanks :) keep up the great work!!
@classicaltrombone
@classicaltrombone 10 лет назад
A shift is necessary at some point, both high and low- but it means you won't be able to play a phrase which has notes on either side of a shift. The exercises I use in this video (not taking your lips off the mouthpiece between notes) help to develop the range without these shifts, so definitely try them out and see how it feels.

Alright so I play baritone. Which essentially is the same as far as range goes right? I just wanna know, is the low F he's talking about the standard "run of the mill, everyday" F that's 4th line on the staff? Thanks
@minimarly
@minimarly 10 лет назад
Yeah, I'm pretty sure we both have the same range, although I think the baritone can go a bit lower and we a bit higher. Oh, and he is also talking about the 4th line F :)
@philipem1000
@philipem1000 10 лет назад
Baritone BC or TC? From the description I assume BC. Trombone and Baritone have a similar range but the Baritone range is a bit higher and a bit lower, as I believe Baritones can go below the low E natural that is low 7th position on a tenor trombone. (Well so can trombones, there is just a break from E natural to Bflat (pedal tone)). In this he starts at the midrange F (fourth staff line in BASS clef); and plays up two octaves, the F above the staff which is sort of the top of the midrange as I think of it. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but that's the F above middle C. Most high school music for trombones rarely goes higher. He goes then to the F above that!And I've never been there. I have never tried to get above the Bflat above the F above middle C. Plus he talks about going an octave higher yet!
@seangriffin5967
@seangriffin5967 10 лет назад
The baritone usually has only three valves, so it's range is pretty much the same as a tenor trombone with no F-attachment, although the baritone can generally go a bit higher. However, if a trombone does have the F-attachment, then it can go down past the low E under the bass clef, although it definitely starts to sound muddy if you don't have a large bore tenor or a bass. Since baritones generally do not have a fourth valve (which is equivalent to the f-attachment), the next lowest note after E would be a pedal B-flat, completely skipping all those notes between the two. If, when you say baritone, you mean euphonium, which is probably what you play since the baritone is not as common, then you probably have a fourth valve, since MOST euphoniums do, and you will be able to sort of go between E and pedal B-flat, but if it isn't compensating then you will skip a note.

@Jack-dx3wo
@Jack-dx3wo 9 лет назад
There really is no limit. Most pieces in high school won't have you going past an F4 (the F first F above the bass clef staff). However, it is good to constantly be extending your range. Certain pieces (especially in jazz band) may have you up on a Bb4. But for starters, I'd work on just being able to play a one octave Bb scale, and just inch your way above that, note by note.
@BigMcLarge
@BigMcLarge 7 лет назад
Ajax if you're still in high school, the lowest note I've had to play in classical literature was a Bb1, with the highest being an A4, but when I did Jazz, I had to go up to Eb5. Jazz almost always requires a great upper register for lead playing.

@yyyy1885
@yyyy1885 8 лет назад
He means push the air continuously and in a controlled way. Also; a pedal Bb is the Bb an octave below the low Bb on the staff, which is a Bb1. Pedal notes are essentially all 1st octave notes.

All you beginners don't listen you are really NOT supposed to roll your lips in but he has his methods, but I am not questioning him
@classicaltrombone
@classicaltrombone 10 лет назад
I agree, to a point. The idea of the exercise in this video is to be able to develop the entire range WITHOUT changing your lips. I do roll my lip in, but it's after the high F and I see it as an extended technique- not a part of normal trombone techniques. (also, I don't think I mentioned rolling the lip in at all in this video?)
