I remember back in my senior year of high school, I did one of my oddest warm-ups at all-district. At my all-district auditions, they just crammed everyone into a giant auditorium and we all warmed up there. There were about 75 trombonists, and only me and one other guy were bass trombonists. So the two of us, being pretty good friends, did a warm-up that just involved playing things as loud and low as we could...(which I would never would do now, since loud pedal tones make a terrible warm-up). The two of us began competing with each other. He got down to somewhere in the double pedals, and I could only get to pedal C-B back then, so he kinda won that. But then, the next thing we knew, we had started a low note/volume contest between all the other trombonists, which then spread to other instruments. It was so funny, even though I'm pretty sure it detracted from everyone's audition. I did pretty well, but the thing I remember most from that whole experience was me and my friend starting an unofficial low note contest for pretty much everyone there. Good times, haha

@Brianna Limon: Indirectly they do. If you start straight away playing fast and high without having fully awaken your body, you will get tired and cramped quickly. So you can't really get to the peak of you playing.

Nice Chris! All good stuff. Try some pitch bending exercises as well. Eventually playing Bb scale all in first position etc. Art Farmer had some of these pitch bending ideas in his book "The Art of Art Farmer" also check out "Flexus" by Laurie Frink and John McNeil. Thanks for sharing your great warmup ideas!

Hi Chris,I really love your videos. You were saying to make sure that you don't raise your shoulders when you breath. So you think it's okay to take in a breath from your lower lungs, and then when you try to continue to breath and fill your upper lungs, you raise your shoulders?

Hey! Fellow music student/trombonist here. Love your video lessons. Just wanted to (politely) point out that you reversed 4 and 5 at 3:10. I wouldn't have said anything, but I'm kind of a grammar nazi when it comes to music theory. Anyways, keep up the awesome work, and I look forward to hopefully some more lessons from you.

This guys is really good! I'm 14 I barely picked up the trombone 5 months ago. I had a great start. I seem to have a natural talent for it. This is the first and only instrument that I have ever played. One day I plan on being ale to do what this guy is doing just as easy

I need some advice. So, I have been playing the Trombone for 3 1/2 years. Honestly, I am not the best player. However, I would like to study Music Therapy. In order to do this I have to audition. Do you have any tips? Thanks I really appreciate your time! p.s. Nice trombone skills :)

I've heard many different theories on mouthpiece buzzing. I've heard that you shouldn't do too much "just" mouthpiece buzzing because it can be harmful to your playing (which I agree with). I just want your input, how long would you say you buzz? No more than 10 minutes a day??
@classicaltrombone
@classicaltrombone 7 лет назад
+Jacob Carter These days I'll buzz a phrase mid practice if my tone quality isn't as pure as I want it to be. I don't see a huge benefit of doing it during warm ups more than a few minutes, but I certainly don't think it'll hurt anything if you do.
@MariaRamirez-tq1xc

how long have you been playing trombone?
@michaeldavies4186
@michaeldavies4186 4 года назад
My warmup process is a lot shorter and less intricate than yours. Mine mostly consists of low long tones, pedal tones on the mouthpiece, scales, and playing the harmonic series. Then again, my range is a pedal G (G1) to the upper Ab (Ab4), so I don't need as much time.

I have a really important question. How can you play your high notes so easily because I am in the 6th grade band at my school and we have to play our scales in warm-ups. Recently,we learned our high E-flat scale and I just can't reach that high E or D even if I practice so hard.
@ivorytypebeat1663
@ivorytypebeat1663 7 лет назад
Liliana Prentiss Hey, I'm also a 6th grade trombonist. Guessing that you're using the right technique for achieving high notes already, I would suggest warming up more. It used to be such a struggle to hit the high E-flat and also the high F, but when I started to warm up more it became much easier. Another thing you could to is to attempt to play notes higher than the E-flat , or really high notes in general. That will make it much simpler to play the E-flat. Also, time and experience play a *huge* factor into how high you can play. Your mouth muscles might need to mature a little bit before you can hit high notes. Hope this helped 😀

@jamiebadley1172
@jamiebadley1172 10 лет назад
What they really do is allow you to get better, a practice or performance without warming up is never going to be full standard, but warming can be just as important...

boy, I am NOT worthy....makes it look SOOOO easy...I struggle to get a good clean F above the clef consistently, after a 50 year hiatus ( I am nearly 70 ) I have returned to my horn with gusto but struggling with range. Practice daily and do plenty of long tones, lip slurs, and just playing and trying to expand the range...any advice would be welcome.

Do you support girl trombonist?... I feel like there aren't many guy trombonists that support girls. There is literally like 5 girls who play it in our entire school.
@classicaltrombone
@classicaltrombone 10 лет назад
Hey Brianna! The short answer is of course I support girl trombonists!! Here's the long answer: When I was in high school competing in honor bands in the area, the only person my age that (consistently) beat me was a girl! There are some very very fine lady professional trombonists (see: Bones Apart trombone quartet.) You just have to focus on the music, and not that you're a girl, because you can do anything you put your mind to. That's because you're a human, not because you're a boy or a girl. Just keep at it and eventually the people around you will be looking up to you as their inspiration.
