The style of dance they’re doing is called New Jack Swing. It’s also the genre of the music during that time. 1986-1993. Teddy Riley(Guy, Blackstreet) is the creator.
EVERYONE danced like that back then lol we had contests in school. Your whole crew of friends had to have moves especially for the school dances... it was a different time.
You’re so right. Everyone didn’t mind sweating and just having a good time without thinking too hard. Kids today are worried about how they look, not sweating or plain sexing on the floor.
I would love a reaction to “Turned Away” by Chuckie Booker but musically it’s the same song, just different lyrics and singer. Chucki Booker was still a great talent.
Pretty much the dancing you see today from ppl & groups like Justin Bieber, K POP Artists, Justine Timberlake, N'sync, Backstreet boys, Britney Spears & etc, started with groups like this & artist like B. Brown. Its moves that were popping in the streets mixed with choreography.
Jack I think you and I would be best friends. I’m a late 80s baby who grew up listening to all of this music in the 90s and still rock this stuff everyday. I have had Troop on replay for months.
Ever had a song run thru your mind...just at random times over the years? This is one of those songs for me. I am always singing this chorus in my head...lol.
I saw this video was mesmerizing to me at 5 years old and even Usher said the same thing. I always said Troop dances better than New Edition. By the way they are friends to this day 😊
Wow! So it wasn't just me who thought that? They are so razor sharp with their synchronized moves, like they're ready for to battle on the dance floor. Love it!!!
I love New Edition , and I mean I really love them. I had to admit though, I was just probably just biased because TROOP definitely danced better, and maybe even sang better back then.

Troop was a great 80;s & 90's R&B group. Here a some of there song that haven't been add yet. My heart, Still in love, I'm not soupped, Young girl, I will always love you
This style is called swingbeat. Each quarter note is divided by six (6). This style was really popular from 1987-1993 until the slower hip hop soul took over. You have to feel how the beat is divided in order to really get it. Chuckii Booker was behind "Spread my wings". He also released two albums with "Games" and "Turned away" being hits. If you like crazy swingbeat drum arrangements, try Karyn White's "The way you love me". It's a Babyface tune as is the ballad, "Sweet November" by Troop which is a cover of when Face was in the Deele. Remember them? "Two occasions!
this is played at a lot of bar b ques.... and still in rotation with me at the gym. Good music never dies and this song will still be played in 20-30 years.
Man this is my song. The dancing is A1 and I think this can be considered New Jack Swing but I might be wrong. I honestly wish more videos would return to styles like this. Great reaction.
The style of dancing is called New Jack Swing. It gets name from the same style of music you been listening too. This group is one of the best dance groups ever. If you can find videos of them live on the Arsenio Hall show you’ll see why. They would do all those days moves live and sing live too.
Always wondered what a Michael Jackson cover of this song would sound like. AMAZING I bet. No shade to Troop, they crushed this. One of my favorite late 80s/early 90s bops.
Great reaction and cool new intro. Troop had the perfect combination of vocals and dancing ability. Another good song by them is “ Sweet November “ written by Babyface. Also another big group around the early 90s was Colour Me Badd it was a multiracial group take a listen to “ All For Love and I Adore Mi Amor . Also Tony Toni Tone “ Anniversary “ and “ It Doesn’t Rain in Southern California “. Thanks
I always thought it was a Babyface song it had his sound all over it and he used to be a member of the deele his group had the song first but I love the cover.
Allen Mcneil (skinny guy) and Steve Russell (First guy) were the two main lead singers they had equal leads. Jon Jon was the other secondary lead singer, he only did background on this one but he was reminiscent of Johnny Gill. They were a dope group. New Editions only SERIOUS competition
Love Troop! Since I’ve been teleworking the last seven months, I’ve been listening to a lot of CDs and Troop and New Jack City soundtrack were two of the CDs I played.
This is one of the best new jack songs ever made, written by Chuckii Booker. Steve Russell sang the first voice and ad-libs at the end. Allen McNeil sings second verse. Steve went on to a successful career as a songwriter/producer. Probably his biggest producer hit is Chris Brown's Take You Down. He also has a solo album that's pretty dope. the dancing is just street dancing. after commodification of hip-hop it became known as hip-hop dance. a lot of the new jack swing era dances are incredibly acrobatic.
Haha! That intro threw me for a minute!😄 But Troop was dope! It really wasn't a name for that type of dancing that's just the way we did it in the late 80s early 90s I guess if you wanna name it could be called New Jack Swing dancing
My favorite song by Troop. Such an underrated classic, written and produced I believe by Chuckii Booker. Try Chuckii doing the great "Turned Away" and "Games".
*"...No More Trump..."* Funny, how Trump was never wanting for christian support. They were that *entire* voting block called the Alt-Right. Tens of millions of christians voted for him.
This is one of my fav genres within R&B music... New Jack Swing, and their dancing didnt really have a specific name. It would of course fall into hip hop, but as another commenter said, just call it new jack swing dancing. I say that because most, if not all new jack swing artists/groups had to be able to dance they ass off. Troop, bell biv devoe, color me badd, bobby brown, etc all could dance their ass off.
They are one of my favorite boy groups. So underrated and amazing. They should have been bigger than they were. Their first single is such a banger that it's my favorite song. "MY HEART ". Their dancing is so tightly on point, that all I can do is stare in awe at how well their chemistry works together. It makes them look like they'd be amazing to watch in concert, which I never got to see.
The choreography doesn’t have a specific name although I see a lot of posts referring to it as “New Jack Swing” bcuz that’s their type of music. However, their choreography has a few other aspects from other genres of dance, like “Poppin’ & Lockin” and “the Robot”. So I’d just say ppl danced like that in the 90s (with influences also from the 70s and 80s styles of dancing).
804 REEZY This Is Not A Michael Jackson Song It's From The Jackson 5's Last Album From Motown Records It's Called The Jackson 5 Moving Violation. One Love Fam...
I believe this style dance is called New Jack Swing (which is an actual song btw, see Wrecks n Effect - New Jack Swing), or Hip Hop dancing. It is not break dancing.
This is one of my favorite songs forever! I don't know if that style of choreography has a formal name but what comes to mind when I see this choreography is New Jack swing. Unfortunately, Troop didn't last long; I wished they had more time.
You need to react to LSG (LeVert, Sweat, Gill) Wide Open or Door #1. 🔥 calabborations; All The Times, feat Faith, Coko, Missy. Curious?.... yeah check that one too!
So happy to see you did this one, amazing reaction Jack. Yes they could dance their tail off. There are about 3 versions of this song. Chuckii Booker wrote & produced this song.
