Everything about this movie is hilarious. Especially because its so unapologetic. And this is HANDS DOWN Tom Cruise's best role. 🤣

HILARIOUS. I think Cruise really had a lot of fun with this role, for sure.

"Man, I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary." Fun Fact: When recording the audio commentary for the Unrated DVD and Blu-ray, Robert Downey, Jr. actually spends the entire commentary in the character that appears on the screen as the movie progresses. Historical Fact: The South East Asian gang Flaming Dragon, led by a pre-teen boy, was modeled after God's Army, a guerrilla army in Myanmar. The group was led by twin brothers Johnny Htoo and Luther Htoo, who were nine years old when it was founded in 1997. Johnny and Luther Htoo were fond of American action movie heroes, especially the Rambo franchise. Cruise Unbound Fact: Ben Stiller said nearly all aspects of the Les Grossman character were developed by Tom Cruise, including the dancing and the look of the make-up. Stiller said that in addition to the more obvious make-up effects applied to Cruise's face and head, and the extra hair on his chest and arms, Cruise also decided to play the character wearing oversized prosthetic hands.

Nu-uh... I am totally going to have to watch the commentary now. LOL! That is pretty intersting about the tie to Rambo. And I caught the prosthetic hands. It sounds like Cruise really had fun with this character inside and out!!! It definitely showed. Thanks!!

In the theater, the movie started seamlessly after the real trailers. It was the most confusing and funniest movie start I've seen.

It's still hysterical how they said the cameras weren't even rolling during the explosion yet the newscast showed a replay of the explosion so someone got it on camera. 🤣 This movie is still my favorite comedy movie alongside Talladega Nights.

HAHA!! You're totally right. I didn't completely step out and thing of that scene from that angle. SO FUNNY. Talladega is a must for the channel sometime in the future!!!

Hello, the multiple bullet wounds to Ben Stiller was an homage to " Platoon ". The Ben Stiller denial scene at his rescue in the camp is an homage to " Apocalypse Now Redux ". " Lance " was Lance Bass from boy band " New Kids on the Block ". The actor who lost the Oscar to " Tugg Speedman " was Oscar Recipient Jon Voight. Also, known as Anjelina Jolie's father.

This is easily Robert Downey Jr.'s best role. He actually got an Oscar nomination, but nobody was beating Heath Ledger that year. Still, far from being criticized, RDJ actually got a lot of contemporaneous praise for his role as Kirk Lazarus, as he effectively mocked a significant segment of Hollywood (not just the actors who would go to such insane and questionable lengths to embody a character, but the studios that generally have no problem with it - they're the ones with the real power, but they are just drawn to what they perceive is the most profitable outcome, and if that means a character plays a different race, so be it) that, like it or not, was pretty well-accepted at the time. I think the reason he didn't face negative consequences from this role was that people could see that it wasn't RDJ playing a black character - it was RDJ playing an Australian actor, who himself believed that "altering his pigmentation" was an acceptable thing to do for a role. There is a difference, making this perhaps the only film ever made where society has been cool with "blackface" (this is not to say that there aren't those who were legitimately offended by the film, but that they don't yet make up a critical mass that is powerful enough to remove this film from its current cultural pedestal...the fact that it remains beloved to this day speaks to their failure). Honestly, I believe that this is one of the funniest movies ever made...certainly top 20, and I'd argue for top 10. The humour within it does rely on some cultural knowledge (which is, in my opinion, why films like this are uncommon in the modern era - it's hard to sell a movie like this to a Chinese audience, the likes of which eagerly gobble up the newest superhero sequel...like it or not, this audience is responsible for a plurality of a film's profits, so studios are loathe to alienate them), but having lived through that era (I was in my mid-20s at the time it was released), I am sucked into its humour every time I re-watch it. And the fact that Ben Stiller himself was the director and co-writer makes it all the sweeter - Stiller has often been overlooked by the snooty movie-goer, as his roles tend to be in low-brow comedies, but this is a work of high art, a postmodern pinnacle of filmmaking...a movie that actually expects its audience to be intelligent, and proceeds accordingly. And I actually think that Jay Baruchel and Brandon Jackson are the most essential actors here, the overlooked straight-men, the audience surrogates, who ensure that any offense is dissipated with a knowing wink. The humour just wouldn't work without them. So while many people barely mention them in their reactions to this film, I am always going to bring them up - Tugg Speedman and Kirk Lazarus wouldn't have been possible without Kevin Sandusky and Alpa Chino.
@okchristina
@okchristina 9 месяцев назад
You are absolutely correct about Kevin and Alpa. I completely agree! And this really is a very funny movie. I think it's swallowed up just by the sheer numbers of other comedies within that genre of it's time. I was also impressed with RDJ's performance. Thanks for the fun comments! And for watching!

Awesome reaction Christina! I'm glad you got to watch something lighter after The Departed. If you haven't seen it yet, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is another good Ben Stiller comedy, though he didn't direct it. You mentioned that you haven't seen Rambo yet. Definitely add the first one to your list. It might seem like it will be just a mindless 80s action film but it's actually much deeper than that. The final scene really shows off Stallone's acting skill as well. You can skip the other Rambo films if you want to. They move toward the typical 80s action film with lots of explosions but not much else going for them, though the second film is somewhat interesting in a historical context. Speaking of Stallone, add Rocky to your list as well. Stallone not only starred in it, he wrote it. Like Rambo, Rocky is more than it might initially appear so even if you think you won't like it because it's a "boxing movie" you should watch it anyway. It's really a love story/character study that happens to be set in the boxing world. Unlike with Rambo, all of the Rocky films and the subsequent Creed films are worth watching.

I just added Dodgeball to the master watchlist and Rambo and Rocky are already on there. I am sure there will be some Stallone on the channel in the near future!! Thanks so much!

Great reaction. This is such an underrated movie and a brilliant satire. It is sad that movies like this don't get made anymore because everyone is so blindly politically correct nowadays. Each character in this movie is illustrating the cliché stereotypes of Hollywood actors. The Robert Downey, Jr. character is making fun of the "method actors" who take it to the extreme.
