Donsknotts nobody but shallow judgemental pricks care that he's into scientology. Or was. Do you think it's any different than Christianity? Both believe in something far fetched. Both groups of believers give to their organization through donations.
He pretty much invented the character for the movie. He told Ben Stiller the script needed a studio presence and he said he wanted to play a guy with big hands lol
The beauty is (iirc) that the kidnappers are Vietnamese. All of Grossman's threats have actually happened, in living memory, on their soil. No wonder he's intimidated!
When Tom cruise was yelling at the crew members behind the mission impossible 7 set for breaking COVID Rules it reminded me so much of this scene out of tropic thunder
***** he is another great actor!! he in most of his films makes us laugh while he remains calm without any smile!! even as ironman he throws jokes that makes us all the audience laugh but he speaks as if it is a very serious thing!!
I'd be surprised if the whole rant was unscripted, but I bet Cruise didn't tell McConaughey he was going to start yelling. "Oh yeah, I'm just gonna be real deadpan, Liam Neeson style"
Robert Downey, Jr. got the nomination at the Oscars while both got nominations at the Golden Globes. Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight basically had it coming. It was no competition.
MrConstantine02 yeah, I try not to mix shit when judging people. We all have weird things we like or that get us through our day. *shrug* He doesn't hurt anyone, that I know if, so yeah, I think you're right. Probably a cool dude in person.
+ShinbrigTV That's actually what he's like in real life and looks like the most incredible make-up effects and CGI gives us the smiling man -boy we all see!!
Sharath SH I was being sarcastic in saying that's actually the real TOM cruise we see in tropic THunder my sense of humor comes from being educated in ENGLAND so sometimes it's hard to get ENJOY!!
One of my favorite characters from one of my favorite films. Most of Tom Cruise's lines and actions were improvised as well. As much as he is vilified in the press, he's still a terrific actor and he has one of the best voices for yelling.
In my view, as a guy who didn't like Cruise all that much before he went nuts, Les Grossman is SO AWESOME he retroactively makes Tom Cruise's entire career cool. Les, you had me at SHUT THE FUCK UP! But seriously, because of Les Grossman, not only was I able to watch Oblivion, but I loved Oblivion, a movie that IMHO is great only to the extent that one appreciates that Tom Cruise's charisma/ screen presence carries the entire thing. Amen.
***** I read some interviews and apparently Ben Stiller had Tom in mind for the role, sent him the script and Tom agreed. I believe it was Tom's idea for the fat suit, the big hands and the dancing.
Want to hear good news?! If Wikipedia speaks the truth (which it does most of the time!) Tom Cruise is in on making a spinoff movie revolving around Les! :D :D :D :D
More of a good thing is not always advisable. For instance, I loved Russell Brand on Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but his solo movie (Get him to the Greek) was awful.
To be fair though, I can understand his outrage to his staff because if anyone tested positive in his crew, the whole movie would be shutdown until everyone got tested positive which would delay his movies for weeks if not months.
2:14 Grossman looking intently at his reading material not even looking up when Rick panics and asks for the gameplan 2:37 Raises a damn Maxim magazine
I love how the Flaming Dragon isn't even offended, they're just shocked and confused like "Holy crap 😳" And Matthew McConaughey's just like "Not bad 👏"
That's what movies should be about. People playing characters they don't look like at all. Now "acting" has become about star power and using an actor's face to boost sales. The best performances are when the actor is barely or unrecognizable, in ex: Judge Dredd, Bane, Tom Cruise and Robert DJ in this movie, The Joker, Sherman etc
Seriously, as fake is that line was from a certain government--I like to use it as a metaphor like other people do about certain situations in our real livss. Now for that, I can thank Uncle Sam!
***** Same here but while watching the movie, I just couldn't figure out who this actor was cause he looked so familiar to me! And then when I saw Tom Cruise's name in the credits, I was like woah so that was Tom Cruise....couldn't believe it!
@@ernstthalmann4306 i tbvh think trump was better when it came to economy Biden is just handing over freebies to people to not work lmao I being one of them lmfaao
Grossman would have saved trillions by just paying the ten richest warlords off and making them kings of Afghanistan, with the caveat that America keeps Kabul as a protectorate city-state, and the mining regions, and we will stay out of their shit as long as they stay out of our shit. If any of them step out of line he pays the other 9 to kill them
@ CVAZprime.......Nice to know there is still at least one other 'thinking' person in this brain-dead nation of ours besides myself. DreamWorks should produce a spin-off feature film built around the Les Grossman character with Tom as the lead. Think of all the shenanigans that could be worked into a premise about a self-centered, ego maniac, narcissistic, unscrupulous, maniacal studio head; the script would practically write itself. If well written Tom would have a shoe-in for an Academy nomination, and perhaps garnering his first win. Fuck it.....I think I'll pitch the idea myself. Now if only I could find Steven Spielberg's cell phone number I misplaced a couple of weeks ago. --Kpayton911 12/21/14
FATAL BOOM RECORDS You speak in paragraphs and it drags on like the winding staircase of which no one has scaled. Much like the crap that spews from your mouth. Yours truly - Samuel
I think the straight man often doesn't get enough credit in these scenes and Matthew plays it perfectly. I love his confused looks and half smirk and 'Hmph' face at the end, he plays it perfectly
@vfxardist Why did you bring up Matthew in Texas Chainsaw Massacre? I'm sure Matthew wants us to forget about it. Also Tom Cruise has played lots of villains. Watch him in Interview with the Vampire and Collateral.
Fun fact: Because Tom Cruise created one of Tropic Thunder's best characters, he demanded that his input be put in to the finished product, and he was willing to learn whatever it took to get the job done. It was, and it was glorious. Les Grossman proved so popular and so in-demand that Cruise agreed to bring him to the MTV Movie Awards back in 2010. It's amazing what hilarious mid-credits dancing can do for your career. "I take classes all the time to learn things or I want to improve a skill… singing, music, something I’m studying. I take dance classes and I took hip-hop classes and then I’ll find a character to put that with." After that earlier tidbit, Tom Cruise circled back to Les Grossman and said what everyone in the room (and probably on the planet) wanted to hear: "I said, ‘Look, I’d love to play this character, but I want to have fat hands and I’m gonna dance.'
I wonder if he had a specific real life person in mind, when he created the character. I mean, fat hands seem like an awfully specific and unusual detail to be insisting upon. I'm sure he saw plenty of guys to draw inspirations from in the business. lol
+VM6 Easy. Because its produced and directed by Ben Stiller. He has massive pull and respect in Hollywood. Everyone knows and wants to work with Ben Stiller.
I thought this was Tom Cruise's best performance. This is not in any way a slur on Cruise. He showed a different side of himself, and dare I say it, the boy has a bit of comedy in him!! I'm guessing it's due to the fact that he only had a small part and he didn't have to give a shit. They took away the looks and hair and replaced them with chubby hands! Brilliant!
Every single cut, word and expression in this scene is pure comedy gold. I literally cried from laughing the first time I watched it. Oh, and Cruise was an absolute GOD in this.
You can never say tom cruise doesnt have a sense of humor! He may play a lot of intense serious action oriented roles, but the man is a comedic genius 😂
You're going to have to get the United Nations to come up with a binding resolution to keep me from destroying you! One of the greatest side character scenes of all time
Every fkin actor in this movie was godlike... like fkin seriously... ReggieLee, MathewMc, Tcruise, JackB, JBaruchel, BStiller, and the list goes on fkin evevryone was godlike...
I could watch this over and over and it will never get old. And I have never seen the whole movie. For some reason, I love hearing Tom Cruise cursing, it makes him more funny, I believe.
+GMmaster99 Because he doesn't know who the hell these people are or what they're capable of, but he's still yelling at them to go fuck themselves in elaborate statements, and then after he's done he's all calm and relaxed, like it's something he does to total strangers without even thinking about it.
