Visiting the amazing selection of refurbished Victorian glasshouses and cold-frames at West Dean gardens near Chichester we were surprised to come across a large, established exotic border in the middle of them - and some chickens! So why not join us as we have a look around and discuss items of interest that we come across?

The plant with the small purple flowers tentatively identifies as a Kiwi reminds me of a runner bean. Or maybe something else in the bean family such as Lablab purpureus.

Hi John and thank you for your comment. I think you may be spot on with Lablab purpureus. So well done, it's a new one on me. Kind regards, Simon and Lorna

I thought the sheffleria is a Begonia luxurian. I do love the Salvias especially Phyllis's Fancy. It shines out at dusk. You probably remember now that Alocasia leaves point up and Colocasia down. However, not in all, I believe.

Agree with Begonia luxurians.

Thanks Michelle and great knowledge there. I accept I made a terrible identification. It is begonia luxurians and in 30 years have never come across it until this year. Thanks for the correction which now means I can identify and order some for myself next year. Kind regards, Simon

Ps, I agree that Phyllis's Fancy looks great. We are geeking over the Salvia guaranitica 'Black and Blue' at the moment but that could change to S. patens next year. Simon

One more thing, I have Alocasia down now as the 'A' of Alocasia points up - so no more confusion for me. This is because we so rarely deal with them in the UK but it is beginning to change. I am looking at getting a selection of the hardiest to trial next year. Any recommendations? Simon

Unknown plant near the beginning is Amicia zygomeris.

John, looks like you have some major horticultural knowledge there - Amicia zygomeris is exactly right. What is your back ground if you don't mind me asking? Simon

@@walkingtalkinggardeners Hi Simon & Lorna. I've been a keen plant enthusiast for many years, but I have no professional qualifications in or connections to horticulture or gardening. I discovered the Amicia many years ago in my local Botanical Gardens and it's been on my 'to-get' list for a long time. Maybe that's why I recognised it and remembered its name. John.

@@johnm6011 Hi John. I find that having a good memory for plant names is about 85% of being a horticulturist so you are OK in my book. Simon
