Having fished a Dorset Frome pool for grayling, this time I try a couple of glides. There is club fishing in the winter months - November through to February - on the Frome from the Wareham and Dorchester clubs, see their websites for details. Christchurch AC also have a short stretch of the Frome. Floatfishing is by far the best way to catch grayling for me though there are expert exponents of the method known as Czech nymphing.

Enjoyable. I've neglected the Frome over the years but have enjoyed the few trips I've had this winter in between the floods! Wonder where the Dace have gone? Many of the Grayling have shown evidence of Cormorant attacks so that's one possibility. Yes I remember catching a good Perch above the old Wool bridge and saw a 2lb plus Roach ( caught by Fred Murray) that day and I caught one from under Wool road bridge of 1.12 as a junior in 1973 that won the match with a few Dace as back up. Sadly I don't believe they are still there (from what I hear). Good observation about Grayling. Those brace shots holding two big Grayling make me shudder. They're almost dead by the time you can hold them steady!

I haven't managed to get on the Frome at all this winter, mainly due to the conditions but also due to wanting to film elsewhere. Above Wareham bypass dace and roach are largely non-existent, and have been since the early 90s when the cormorants started to do real damage, possibly a few in the mill stream at East Stoke along with some perch. I have never had perch above the tidal though they originated from the Bovington tank trap silt ponds. Gudgeon also used to be present in the river but not seen any for 20 years. There were roach to 3lbs at Wool and West Holme at one time, my best at West Holme is 2-5. Down on the tidal small chub are showing more in summer plus rudd and small roach as well as the more usual dace.

Drennan wire stem avons make a great float for shallow pegs one of my fav floats for grayling. I make a smaller version taking a mere 4x4 shot load. 👍

@MarkWintleFishing 2 года назад
I've made some smaller versions as well; some of the John Allerton alloy sticks are useful for this type of fishing, and I'd imagine some of the smaller Dave Harrell floats would also work.

@@MarkWintleFishing yes they are very similar. Drennan stopped making the 4x4 version some time ago I think . It's a shame as it was brilliant for shallow swims. Really enjoy your videos Mark 👍

I don't think I ever found the 4 x no. 4 versions but did like the 5 no. 4 ones though I did convert some into Trent Trotters.

Glad you said about dropping them in from a bit of height, not too much though. I found that with some grayling, they do tend to shoot off and keep swimming rather than turn belly up. Some of those would have been nice in the pan. 🤫 One of Fred J's favourite fish.

We had to bring in rules over 20 years ago to force the return of grayling. It wasn't so bad when they were a bycatch of bags of dace and roach but when the dace and roach disappeared all we had left was grayling.

Hi Mark, I've watched many of your videos over the past year and as an angler very similar to yourself, I fish for grayling, trotting on the Derbyshire Derwent and employ roaming tactics like yourself . However, I use an old Shakespeare President 14 foot stick float rod coupled with an Abu 505 I purchased new in 1970. I had a couple of Mitchell Matches but couldn't get on with them. Now, I see you always carry a bait station and bank stick to support your bait boxes, I use a multi pocketed bait apron, and so, do away with carrying the bait station and bank stick. I really appreciate your efforts in producing these videos, so that we can enjoy the delights of an experienced stick floa t angler ( what we used to call "stick & pin" anglers on the river Trent in the mid sixties) when we cannot get to the bank side.

Over the years I've tried bait aprons/maggot bags a few times and never got on with them. I find it quicker to see the bait in the bait box. For health reasons I may do more sitting down fishing in the near future which gives me different options re bait, though the downside is carrying a heavier box plus legs (don't mention the weight of the camera gear!). I have 4 bait waiters of various designs - in winter for bread fishing I have a fibreglass one that I helped design in 1980 - stil going strong. Glad you're enjoying the videos; they're fun to make.

What's your thoughts on feeding when grayling fishing mark .
@MarkWintleFishing
@MarkWintleFishing 2 года назад
In the two videos I feed very lightly - just four or five maggots a trot and that is fine given the small head of fish present. Heavy feeding does tend to bring the trout in.

Hi. I'm Janusz from Poland. Thanks for your movies. I have a question: when It's better to use waggler, when avon float. My river- Vistula is 300 meters wide, 1-2 meters deep usually. Fast flow, powerful river. Does it depend on casting distance? Fishes: chub, roach, bleak, dace, monsters.
@MarkWintleFishing
@MarkWintleFishing 2 года назад
There's several dependencies; casting distance, whether you can catch on the drop or on the bottom. Obviously it's not a river I know at all but as ever in fishing trying different approaches can work and that's the way to learn I grew up fishing the tidal Dorset Frome and was mazed how successful a method using a waggler was for catching dace on that river.
@markhalsey7890
@markhalsey7890 Год назад
If you are not holding back why not trot a little wagger down? No horrendous strike splash. Nor tangle when the line loops over the float cap.

@@markhalsey7890 Update. Now I use 7-meter bolo rod and I use stop technique with leaf float:) Thanks for your advice.

It's pronounced 'River Froom'
@MarkWintleFishing
@MarkWintleFishing 2 года назад
I grew up in Wareham and no-one ever told me me I was wrong so I tend to say it the way I always have. In Wareham people usually either referred to the specific venue eg the Towpath or the South River for the Frome (or North River in the case of the Piddle). Pronouciation is odd anyway - take Gillingham; in Kent they pronounce it as if it starts with a J, in Dorset the G is a hard G - where's the logic?
@MarkWilliamsANDPR
@MarkWilliamsANDPR 2 года назад
@@MarkWintleFishing Even more annoying is the Nene. In Northamptonshire, it's the 'Nenn' then crosses the border and becomes the 'Neen'. I also grew up in Dorset. I'm a Froom man, but hey, each to his own. After 40 years away, I'm back in Dorset and planning to fish there, however it's pronounced
