This is another video in my series “ Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the town of Wareham which is located 8 miles to the South West of Poole in Dorset.
My 5 mile circular route is in two parts. The first part sees me walking around the old perimeter Saxon wall of the town before I head out, in the second part, to enjoy a meander along the banks of the River Frome.
After parking my car at one of the central car parks in Howards Lane (£2.80 for 4 hours) and started my walk on the North East section of the old wall / bank - an area known as “The Bowling Green” and headed Westwards (along the top of the wall) to firstly have a look at St Martins' Church (one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town & indeed is believed to be the most complete example of an Anglo Saxon church in Dorset).
I continue Westwards with super view of the River Piddle & it's floodplain to the North before heading South along the “Bloody Bank” towards the old town pound. My walk then takes me to the historic Wareham Quay & South bridge - and my first sight of the River Frome.
My exploration of Wareham finishes with a look at the magnificent Priory church of Lady St Mary.
Part two of my walk commences along the River Frome (following one of the Poole Harbour Trails). This was a really pretty walk along the bank with so much wildlife to look out for as well as some impressive boats moored up on the river.
I pass by the old gravel pits - now deep lakes - at Bestwall Park and after saying farewell to the River Frome, I soon join up with the River Piddle (although it is hidden by reeds) to start my return leg back to the town.
The walk finished with light refreshments at the Quay Inn to the South of the town.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX IMPORTANT NOTE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX I am sorry about the quality of the image stabilization on the video, which is not that great at times. I was using a Gopro 10 camera for the second time (they had only recently been available to buy) and all users of the camera were experiencing issues & problems with the stabilization when either standing still or moving slowly! A Firmware update has since been provided by Gopro and I am pleased to say that the issue has now been resolved. I hope that it does not spoil your enjoyment of the video.
