My 2021 Royal Enfield Continental GT suffers its first malfunction.
The exact cause of the issue is unclear, could be anything from a bad connection at the relay to the fuel pump going south.
Best guess at this is that the fuel pump relay just had a janky connection.

Could just be a connection. You taking it out putting it back in could fix the connection. That is what is sounds like from my experience working on helicopters in the Navy. Take those relays out, clean the connectors and put some dielectric grease on them. Best of luck my dude.
@UncleVoodoo
@UncleVoodoo Месяц назад
That’s my best case scenario, like I said in the video I didn’t think of checking the connection until after I had swapped them.

Yea when I got mine the fuses were packed with grease. I also had to replace my battery while my bike was still new.

Not being mechanically inclined myself, this would be an especially troublesome predicament for me. I learned something here, though. I’m really glad to see you got home o.k., though. Happy Trails

I had the same issue when my bike was about 2500-3000 kilometers old. It just shut down while riding. Multiple instances. When bike cooled a little bit i was able to start the bike and get home. Acted as if there was no fuel. Turns out there is a batch of Continental GT's that came out of the factory with faulty/shitty relays. I replaced all four with Bosh and the bike never had that issue again (I have 10500 kilometers on it to date). My advise is to replace all 4 relays and DO NOT overdo it with the conductive grease. Best of luck from a new subscriber.

I had already cleaned the plugs and replaced the relays, I think the fuel pump relay just had a janky connection. Ive reclined everything, tightened the plugs and replaced the relays again just for good measure and it's been doing fine.

I think you did a damn fine job swapping the relays to get home. I can't offer any advice on electrical gremlins, but I hope you get it sorted and back on the road.
@UncleVoodoo

I'm hoping it was just the relay having a bit of wonky connection as it's been running fine since then. Jobu was getting ready to call you to see if we could barrow that new trailer of yours!

My Interceptor had a spell last year where nothing came on when I turned the key. No warning lights, no fuel pump. I’d ridden about 90 minutes and this happened when I tried to restart it after a break. I cycled the key a couple of times and everything was back to normal. I pulled all the relays when I got home and cleaned out the gobs of grease. That hasn’t happened since. A couple of weeks ago the bike wouldn’t crank at all even though the lights came on and the fuel pump seemed to hum like normal. I didn’t follow my normal advice to check the obvious first, so I pulled all the relays and sprayed them with electrical cleaner, checked the battery and nothing seemed wrong. Then I pressed the starter button a little more firmly, and the bike fired right up. I sprayed the electrical cleaner into the area and the bike starts fine ever since. I did manage to break the mounting bracket for the side cover when accessing the relays, so checking the functioning relays still paid off. Apparently RE doesn’t stand for reliable electrics.

As an industrial electrical specialist myself, there have been situations at work with problems in drive unites on conveyors. Where I had to just reset cards in the computer banks. That would usually solve the problem.

It may never happen again, however if it does then disconnect the live off the battery and hook it on the earth for 20 mins or more. Sometimes modules, rectifiers etc mess up but they hold their memory, earthing the live for a period can cause electrics to reset. I'm sure you know all this anyways, but it is a usually the first trick I do on bikes and cars and usually works.. Cheers for the video.

These 650s are prone to relay failures under the left side panel, often the connections are full of grease from the factory. Clean with contact cleaner. If the battery light stays on for a short time after starting, it's the rectifier under the engine.

Had same problem. Replaced the relays with new Bosch ones and having had no issue since. I did clean the grease out when I got the bike new and ordered the Bosch relays to have on hand. Seem that most every bike brand has it's known issues on certain bike. It kind of gives the RE's a true classic feel 😂. The bolt/screw on that side cover can be perfectly replaced with a GoPro mounting screw for easy access without tools. Cool idea I learned watching so many RU-vid video's on the bike. I carry a spare rely just in case, like you said.

@UncleVoodoo

I did that when I first got the bike, Im assuming there might have been a connection issue with the relay socket as one of the plugs had a much larger gap than the others.

I had a similar experience on my Himalayan did the swap and made it home. I found a relay at an auto zone store that worked. Of course the old relay works fine. I did clean the white grease out of the relays and sockets and put dielectric grease in. Still works. More relays for spares just in case?

What an interesting video ! My Interceptor650 had a somewhat similar episode, but different in that I have yet to get it to run properly. I guess you were lucky to return home ok. Had there been an engine warning light, I would've suggested scanning for codes. Well, whatever failed, hopefully it won't do it again and you continue to enjoy your Continental GT650. :)

I commented in another video of yours a bunch of months back... If it happens again and fails to turn on, I would start with the Lambda Sensor and the Kickstand Sensor as I believe that is what ended up being wrong with mine when it suffered a similar issue. (took a lot to figure it out). Best of luck from Spain.
@bel19119082008
@bel19119082008 Месяц назад
It looks like the Side Stand sensor is getting defective. That's why, when you put it on gear, the ecu is killing the fuel supply. Just change the side stand sensor Your fuel pump, relays, injectors all ok. Just change that sensor I am damn sure.

Interesting. Like the himalayan did you notice any white gunk like grease on the relay connectors? I reckon this may have caused the connection problem. The fact you changed them both over and both go, indicates this. I carry 2 x spare relays ready for this type of thing to happen... like a good boy scout i reckon your preparing well and your on to it uncle.
@UncleVoodoo
@UncleVoodoo Месяц назад
The plugs were cleaned of the white grease and the relays were replaced with “better” ones when I first got the bike. I’m assuming it was a wonky connection. I’m still going to swap them all out again but I’m going to slightly bend the tabs to ensure a good connection.

Another switch/relay that can screw you up is the side stand sensing relay. With out that triggered the main power relay (orn/red wires) that supplies the ECU and fuel pump gets no juice. You will hear a two relays click when you put the stand up if its switch is working. The power relay and the stand relay.
