Kicking off a series highlighting the best roads for motorcycling in Virginia, we take a trip on Route 56 starting in Steeles Tavern heading east Rt151 and then on to Amherst.
For anyone interested in taking this run, please be careful when you get to the intersection of 151 and 29. Its a pretty dangerous intersection, a lot of wrecks and near hits happen there all the time due to visibility and speed ( there is a hill climbing towards intersection in the southbound lane). Police like to watch that area as well and will run radar near the church about 2 miles up 151 (speed limit bounces from 45 to 55 and back a few times). Also the Amherst corner to the left on this video at the intersection, is a great little family friendly diner for ice cream on a hot day. And to add, if you have a smaller cc bike and want to avoid 29, you can go down into Lowesville as mentioned but hang a left instead, it will bring you out past Amherst's 3 lakes and directly onto rte 60. Happy and safe riding to all.
Thanks for coming along for the ride! Im trying to highlight the rides that smaller displacement bikes are perfectly capable of doing, even though Im on a "bigger" bike now I still love me a little bike.
Great video sir , nicely done, I would be afraid YOGI and BOO BOO and BAMBI would jump out in front of me on those roads, thankyou for taking us along the ride , looking forward to the new series of videos ,, ride safe my friend
I absolutely loved this. For a limey it’s always fascinating to visit the US with wide open spaces and strange laws. But to see somewhere new across the handle bars and learn a little about a place I associate with Laurel & Hardy (you know the song)makes for a something I will aspire to do! Keep ‘em rollin’!
Love the Filling Station! Lots of beer in the cooler and the taps. Food is pretty good also. I think I will end this ride at Loose Shoe Brewery which is right down the hill from there in the shopping center.
I'll try to let you know way in advance when I do Rt 211 / Skyline Drive so we can hook up. My plan at the moment is to ride up there on 11 and do 211 from New Market - Luray - Sperryville then camp near Front Royal on 340 and come down Skyline the next day.
Well, you sure put a lot of hard work into this video and it shows; with loads of nice little information touches and references. Of course the scenery was gorgeous and great riding roads. Thank you bud, really enjoyed that. Ride safe. Neil from England.
Our gas prices are a little bit misleading, we have very low point of sales taxes but we get hit with behind the scenes fees and taxes that nullify the perceived lower prices. I have to pay additional registration penalty fees because my vehicles get good gas mileage for example. That Gertie's diner would've been another example, I'd pay sales tax on my food if Id've bought some... plus an additional tax if I consume the food on the premises. There's a lot of weird little things like that.
Weather pushed me ahead one day to film this, and it just happened to be a Monday- which they're closed on. Every time I've been past there when filming seems to always be on a Monday for some reason.
I really enjoyed this great ride. It reminds me of my youth spent in N.C., exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smokey Mountains N.P. I’m itchin’ to get back up that way & hit some of those gravel roads. I have three trail capable bikes now: ‘06 KLR 650 modded, ‘21 Honda CRF300 Rally modded, and my new Triumph Scrambler 1200xe. I like how you’ve got your Continental dialed in. That exhaust sounds very sweet.
Megan and I came down this road after camping up on big levels and my exact reaction was “Well look at this A**hole “owning” a waterfall”😂 I would shower under that thing just because I could😂 But this is one CROOKED road for sure!
I'm kind of surprised that guy doesn't rent that spot out for weddings and such, the landscaping is nicely manicured there too. Nice little property he's got. me > jealous.
