The Hunt for Elektron: When Norwegian officers boarded a Russian trawler, the last thing they expected was to be abducted. But for 5 days, they were held prisoner while the navy chased the ship.

"We closed all the hatches and prepared for war", states Valery Jarantsev, captain of the Russian trawler, Elektron. When two Norwegian officials caught his ship illegally fishing, he defied their orders to return to port. Instead, he abducted the Norwegian officials and made a mad dash for Russia. "He was quite determined. He didn't show any signs of surrendering", recalls abducted officer Henning Thune. Another Russian trawler came to Elektron's aid, preventing it being intercepted by the coast guard and the ship entered Russian waters. But Jarantsev is now being prosecuted by his own government, after they reached a deal with Norway. He faces up to seven years in prison.

So were they overfishing or were they not ? This is all very ambiguous. Did the Norwegians have the right to stop them, even by force ? Because if the answer is yes then the Norwegian Coast Guard didn't do their job and should be held responsible for letting the Russians escape.

davidtsw Ask yourself would the overfish in Swedish waters or Canadian waters Turkish NATO waters or British they know who to do it on and who not this was 14 years ago since this the Scandinavian Nations Norway 🇳🇴 Finland 🇫🇮 Sweden 🇸🇪 and Denmark 🇩🇰 all built up the Naval forces massively since then and then the three Baltic Nations joined NATO as well in 2007 a year later

The Russian company should donate the fish haul to needy people as needed and the Captain forfeit a days pay. Surely, he will not be so adventurous in the future. At no time were the Norwegian inspectors in any danger from the Russian crew, probably more so from their own ship with it's cannon readied. The Norwegians were no match for that Russian destroyer if this incident turned into a shooting gallery.
