Troubleshooting Cracks In Clone Trooper Armor Seams

If you are building Clone Trooper armor from a hard ABS kit, and some of your seams are cracking, this technique may solve your cracking problem.
I also go into making and using ABS sludge, and how to apply it, but the primary cracking issue can be solved with most fillers or epoxy putties.

ABS paste/sludge is seriously the best; I love that stuff. I'm working on my clone forearm armor for my Twi'lek Jedi General now and the dang things are driving me batty (armor from Imperial Surplus, I highly recommend). Thanks to your video I know I'm doing everything right, I just need to keep at at it, and probably have more patience. Thankfully no cracking. I'm also finding I'm lacking the finesse that would make my life easier, because I've never had to fill in seams before. The process of getting the seams smooth is just taking a lot more passes and rounds and time than I realized it would. Oh well, at least I know I'm doing it right! Great instructions.

Your tips are amazing - thank you so much for making this video! My armor always seems to crack when pushed on in certain spots that shouldn’t be an issue, and your backing method looks like the perfect solution. Thanks again!

Very helpful tips on how to apply the slude. I'm on my first build with a HIPS kit, are there any differences between HIPS and ABS sludge?

I am not sure, I have only used ABS sludge.

@@OddViking Thanks anyway, the differences that i've heard of are that HIPS sludge should take longer to make but is easier to apply. I guess i'll do some test myself then. I'm still concern about safety. I thought acetone was really toxic when melting plastic, they say its smoke could cause cancer, imagine my shock seeing you applying with your fingers. I guess it is safer to use after it melts?

@@kaminopub0903 As far as I know, there is not smoke. It breaks down as it dissolves, rather than heat melts. This is the same acetone that people remove nail polish with, so while it has fumes, it is okay to be around for a limited time, and sludge has even less of that vapor.

@@OddViking Thanks again for the suggestions. I've done some tests and it works great. The only downside is that it leaves a porous surface when you finish sanding, which Bondo do you use at the end process?

@@kaminopub0903 It does have a porous surface. I use Bondo Glazing and Spot putty (pre-mixed tube that you can find at auto supply stores), and usually followed by Rustoleum filler primer (fine steel wool, then burnished with a paper towel to a shine) to ensure a smooth seam.
