My wife went to Home Depot and picked up bags of dirt. They brought out to the highlander to load. My wife was in the drivers seat so her remote was close. The person from Home Depot hit the window button thinking it opened the gate. To load this for her…. This disabled the gate. Your video fixed this .. I appreciate it.. thank you
Didn't realize that little button on the back door opened the window. Just got my used Highlander today and was frustrated that back door wouldn't open. Made sure the window was closed and voila, back door works! Thank you for solving my issue! 😊
I haven't been able to open my lift gate fully on my 2017 Highlander. It only opened about a foot. Made an appointment at the Toyota dealership to tomorrow morning to get the darn thing fixed. About 20 minutes ago, I discovered your video and followed your instructions to go to the app and found the setting for the lift gate and changed it from 1 to 5 and it now works perfectly. Going to call early and cancel my appointment. Wish had looked for your video many months ago. Thanks.
Thank you for this! Just purchased a 2018 at Beaman in May, 2021. This was never mentioned. Had quite an experience with it yesterday, after having the Highlander washed. Window open, warnings flashing and beeping, back door not opening fully. Could have all been easily avoided. Wish I had seen your video before I left the dealership!
I was about to go to the dealer bc my back hitch has been broken for a month now. I did not know it had customizable opening levels. And that button to left of glove compartment I’m sure was pushed by one of my kids! Thanks so much for this video!!
Awesome. Thanks for the info. We must have unlatched the rear window and we thought the rear door would not close, but it was the window that was not latched.

I also was thinking of getting a new one until you said in another video that the rear hatch window doesn't open anymore on the new models. I use that way more than the full door so that's a deal breaker for me. Very helpful thank you !
thank you, trying to figure out why my Dad's back door wouldnt open , and the book was no help. Within watching your video for 3 minutes, my Dad now knows that the back back can open and won't allow the back door to open if window is open.
Thanks for posting this ..... could not get my Tailgate door "OPEN" alarm to go off. After watching this, I discovered it was the rear Glass door that was open. Thanks again for posting.

This was really helpful for me. Thanks. My rear hatch would not open all the way. Turns out it somehow the custimize setting had been changed to 3 at some point. Put it back to 5 and works perfect now!

Thanks Steve! Some how ours was stick open giving us long beeps when trying to close. Some how the glass was popped open while the door was up. Easy fix, I just pushed up on the glass about an inch and let it “slam down” on its own. The car beeped a few times then I could close my door normally by hitting the button

@stevenwelchtoyota somehow the tailgate setting was at 1. I never even go into my apps let alone the settings ut I switched it to 5 and now it opens just fine again!! Thank you

I mistakenly placed a cloth and the back door closed on it. Now I am not able to open the back door. I can hear the unlock sound but it is going back to lock again without opening it. Is there anything should I do before I go to the dealer? I Would you please help?
Yes it is a easy fix. Grab the handle and pull the door open fully after it unlatched. It will be difficult. Push the door to fully open make sure both sides are up all the way. Hit the close button. That should do it
my 2016 highlander tailgate wont open. tried the back window and the glovebox switch. when I push the buttons I hear unlatching noise back there but it doesn't unlatch. please help

Yes what they said…ours got disabled after a cabin air filter change! Check the button just left of glove box after opening door! In is enabled and out is disabled!
You failed to mention that there is ALSO a switch to turn off the power to the rear door. The on/off switch is located between the dash glove box & console. Open the glove box & look between the actual box & console.

I have a 2016 Toyota Sequoia with no automatic leftgate, I have tried asking my local dealer for the leftgate installation, they tell me my model is the only one you can’t add it later to this vehicle. Please help in Virginia.
If there is a long (5 second) beep when you try to open it? I have tried everything, but no luck. I have heard that disconnecting the battery might fix things, but was hoping to avoid that.
ITs likely the jam protection. You may have to grab the door lift it all the way up and push both sides to the top then hold the lower button until the 2nd set of beeps to reset it
YOUR Video on the hatch saved my bacon. I am now a subscriber as I have learned so much about Hylander. Is is fourth Hylander. I will keep watching. How about the Tundra.

I've had occasions when the trunk door wouldn't open. I would just get a tone. Try starting your vehicle, go from park to drive and back to park. Your trunk should open. It worked for me a few times.
I have tried everything you suggested in this video as well as checking the button in the glove box with no success. I want to check the fuse but don’t know which fuse it is. Can you help me?
Great video but you forgot to mention the tail gate on/off button which is located behind glove box door on the left side. Button must be pushed in for tailgate to work. I had inadvertently turned button off when changing my cabin air filter.
Had the cabin filter replaced at the dealer and the technician didn't properly seat the glove box afterwards. The button was OK but the glove box door was slightly ajar and not correctly put back. All I got was error beeps. Had to return to the dealer for them to figure it out. This has now happened to me twice at the dealership.
That really helped me in fixing the half open rear door. Now my liftgate struts have a squeaky noise at opening and closing. What is the lube point on the struts to solve this problem? Thanks.
What about when the door won't close? About 90% of the time my door will close an inch or two and then stop. Have to manually close it so I've stopped using it at all. Tried resetting with the button on the door itself and by turning off and on the glove box button. Neither solved the closing problem. The rear window is not open. HELP!!
its likely that the door is not closing evenly causing the jam protection to engage. you can try to open the door then push up the door as high as possible, that will even up the door. if that does not work its likely the lift cylinder on one side or the other is bad.
Thanks! Window problem. Now cannot find that settings to Vehicle tab to reset height. My screen doesn’t match your screen in set up? Will spend more time later with the back buttons. At least the hatch opens and shuts if only to a lower level.
