This HP w2207h would flick its backlight on for half a second before turning it off. I describe some of the steps I take in troubleshooting and repairing bad CCFLs or connections, reviving the monitor in the process.

What a great skill to have, to be able to work out what the problem is amongst so many products and then fix them

At my work we had Motorola mobile computers for barcode scanning that had a 10" display. These were CCFL backlit displays. After 10 years of 24/7 use I started to see failures, the display developed a pink hue. We had close to 100 of these units. After replacing the CCFLs in a few of these it got much easier with practice. I remember breaking quite a few bulbs when re assembling.

I have a Hannspree HF237HPB. I have replaced all the capacitors thinking that was the only problem. It has increased how long the light stays (up to 30secs compared to just 1) I checked the ccfls and one bulb defiantly needs to be replaced. How would you go by identifying what size bulbs are needed.

My HP Compaq LA2405wg has the same problem. Screen lights up on startup but goes black in a couple of seconds. I can't remember when I bought it so not sure how old it is. I am looking forward to opening it up now. I am not an electronics person just game to give it a go. Thanks for a great Video.

Good vid! /) I just took apart an old monitor of mine that had the same symptoms, and those dark parts at the end of the tubes looked like some black liquid was seeping out and touching the inside of the glass. I'll assume that means it has burned through. Plugging in a working monitor's back lights to the same power supply, they turned on and stayed on just fine. Learned something new here today, thanks!

Lovely. I'm in that same situation right now with my 22" LCD monitor. I hope it isn't the inverter on the power supply and I hope I don't screw things up. Leftmost part of these lights are darker and that noise you showed us on video was indeed present when I was testing. Fingers crossed!

Hey there.. You seem to know things about inverters so I'll ask you the same question I asaked the poster ... I just need to know if this monitor uses a CCFL or a CCFL-2 lighting system. (Apparently the CCFL-2 lighting uses two bulbs connected to two inverters.) And makes a difference whin applying settings to a color calibration system like the Spyder5....Thank you brother for your informed answer! ...Randy.

+Randy Levine I ended up not using the CCFL lights anymore. Did a DIY using LED strip instead, using the 12V from the power source. The light from them is brighter, but I dismantled the LCD a month after that mod because, all of a sudden the monitor stopped showing anything on screen. It was not backlight, maybe the circuit with flat above the monitor broke something. Unfortunately I couldn't find the problem so far.

i have a viewsonic 22in ccfl monitor, the power on blue led keeps cycling on-off, but when i disconnect the hv supply its steady on,probably oneor many ccfls must have fused or wiring shorted out, cannot seem to like todays led back light monitors/tvs, ccfls are pleasent to the eyes.

Does anyone know if I can use the CCFL of a Compaq CQ56 on an HP G60? Are they interchangeable?

I've been struggling a bit with a LG 22" LCD from a client and I've just discovered the issue is just a CCFL. The failure was that, after sometimes just seconds, sometimes more than 15 minutes of use, the backlight will shut off randomly. I've checked if all the CCFL were on (all 4 were apparently working), checked the PS: inverter, capacitors, and blah blah. Nothing wrong there. Also I've spotted weird errors like: in the moments backlight was working, changing brigthnes on the OSD didn't work at all. So I've even suspected something going wrong with the CCFL controller, or even the OSD controller. But even after that last weird thing that happened, I tried disconnecting one by one the CCFL and found out it was actually one of them (that was actually correctly lighting in) the one that made the protection shut off. It also seems to be the responsible for that error with brightness control. After replacing it with another, everything is working well. It was ONLY buzzing if brightness was at minimum (after changing it to minimum with the test CCFL, and connecting it back again, it was buzzing and flickering. At maximum brightness it seemed OK).

Hello. Thank you for your response (By email)..Yes, apparently there are two types of CCFL lighting used in LCDs...Named CCFL type 1 and type 2... Type one uses 1 inverter and type two uses 2 inverters...As to the number of possible bulbs that each type can use, I am not sure..... Do you know if the four bulbs in this HP monitor are connected to one inverter or two inverters? Thanks for your help... Randy... (From Toronto Canada) :)

Very helpful! I found one of the bottom CCFL on my Gateway FHX2300 monitor is bad and made the monitor shut down after 3-4 seconds. I tried to unplug it and the monitor turns on only 1 sec, can it be just a protection circuit or that the driver is damaged?
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 8 лет назад
+Electrospark That's most likely the protection circuit, replacing the tube will probably fix your issue.

Thanks for the video. I have a question: What if the problem is with the LCD panel connection between it and its logic card? I've got 2 out of the 8 flat connections detached and I don't know if and how it can be fixed. Do you know anything about it? Thanks :)
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 9 лет назад
If you're referring to the cables between the LCD panel and the board running along the entire width of the panel, those connectors can sometimes be mended by running a low-temperature (250 C or so) soldering iron over them, slowly. I've never had to deal with one of those being physically detached, however; aligning it for re-attachment is probably difficult bordering impossible for the DIY.

I'm using an HP w2207 monitor, it's a lower model to your one as mine has no HDMI (I presume that is why your model number has an H at the end?) My backlight has done 21339 hours.

I have the same problem, It turns on for a minut and go black, i suspect be the same problem as had already change the power suply and that did not solve the problem, but get a bit scary as you say the CCFT can exsplode if it get to hot on soldering it, and also seems not go that easy to do.but I order from china (AliExsp) 2 CCFT that become with the metal holder for around €8 or in dollars be $ 9,55 and hope I can fix it with that, and thanks for the upload off your video here on YT

Is there any risk of high voltage in these monitors with them unplugged? My 20 inch LCD is making what sounds like high voltage arcing or buzz. Maybe the same fix??? All the electrolytic caps test ok with cap tester and ESR meter.
@harshbarj
@harshbarj 8 лет назад
+Len S Only risk would be the PSU caps. If you don't work on or near the PSU there should be no problem. If it still bothers you, you can always discharge them with a multimeter.

Is it possible to completely get rid of the back light at all and replace it with some sort of highly reflective Front Surface Mirror instead? That way the monitor becomes a reflective sunlight readable display and I don't know may be it will look more like a piece of paper rather than a source of light.
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 10 лет назад
Yes, but it probably wouldn't work very well; backlit LCD panels are extremely poor at letting light through (only a few percent of the actual backlight light gets to your eyes). It would still be very dark, because of that.
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 10 лет назад
***** The monitor would be much darker than everything surrounding it. Just look at a mobile phone display in sunlight - they're usually purpose built semi-reflective displays, but they're still barely-readable due to their poor ability to pass light.

Man how did you manage to put the tube inside that steel thingy after peeling the wire off it? Did you put the wire inside it too. Your London accent is fairly understandable so no problems there.
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 7 лет назад
I don't remember this particular fix, but I usually put things together exactly the way they were. I don't see why it'd be hard to put the tube back in.
@EvoBeard

Whenever I hear "London accent" I forget there are other London's than the UK lol (I'm gonna have to visit all the ones in Europe/Africa or I can't call myself a true Londoner). Clearly spoken, very informative and helpful video, kudos.

Don’t CCFLs sometimes have a coating of mercury on the outside? (Not just mercury gas inside)
@FFcossag

No.

@@FFcossag “The literature reviews showed that not only does the fluorescent powder in CCFLs in LCD TVs contain mercury; in fact the entire CCFL, especially older and used CCFLs, have mercury amalgamated to the glass and the electrodes as well” There was a study on this I cannot post links because RU-vid will delete my comment then but if you google that quote it should come up.

Hello, i didnt fully understand what do you say about the smell of ozone? I got an LCD TV and the inverter boards are smelling something, i guess it is maybe ozone.
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 9 лет назад
Ozone smells a bit like chlorine; think of the smell of a swimming pool.
@int0x13
@int0x13 9 лет назад
FFcossag yes, in the meantime ive done some searching and found out this smell is coming from the what is called the corona effect, which is an air ionisation when there is a hight voltage around. See here if you're interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corona_discharge So if we smell this inside a monitor or a tv, it is 100% sure there is a bad joint near the CCFLs?

RU-vid decided it wanted me to watch this one, so I did, I had the same problem on a laptop screen, one end of the CCFL desoldered and arced, unfortunately for me, it ruined the tube so I got a new one and fitted that, and it worked, a month later I bought a higher resolution screen anyway so it was a redundant fix... :P

what?? omg? are these ccfls SOLDERED??????? how come they not in some socket for easy replacement? my problem is that I have a only 4 years old dell u2311h, wich is a pretty good IPS full hd monitor but the ccfls got kinda weak. Like not enough backlight, and straining my eyes. I remember it was wery strong when new. What is your opinion, its gonna be the same assembly/disassembly problems like here? Is it possible that theyre socketed for easy replacement...? thx.
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 9 лет назад
They are not going to be socketed. They're designed to last the service life of the monitor, which is usually around three years. Generally, replacing CCFLs is not worthwhile.
@kbuss10
@kbuss10 9 лет назад
3 years omg :-(..? That is extremely weak :-( I mean this was a pro-sumer monitor with ips panel and higher than normal gamut. I planned to use it for at least 6 years or more. BTW what do you think about these ccfl to LED conversion kits which come prepared with a circuit board to replace the inverter I think...?
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 9 лет назад
***** I've never done any work with them, so I have no opinion.
@rlwings
@rlwings 8 лет назад
+Krisztián Not to worry. I still have this HP monitor (8 years old now) and it literally still looks just as good as my brand new IPS monitor! (Except for the viewing angles of course). It has 9000 hours on it so it might be that it hasn't been used that much...But what a performer! ... I got it at Best Buy here in Canada 8 years ago as a refurbished unit for about $350.00 which at the time was considered a steal, lol... Aging depends on usage more than time. (And a little luck).
