Thank you so much - my Cobra GR25 LTD ST´s Speaker died today. Checked it and found nothing visible inside and on the Speaker. After your explanation at the Beginning of the Video about Circuitry you saved my Day. Thank you so much and wish you all the good Numbers.
Hi there @renehasselmeier9866. Windy day out today and a little overcast I am new to this and I thought that I woudl ask if you are an active CB operator? I ask because I am a little curious if there is a lot of activity on the CB radio. I may go out and try to buy one either used or new. Regards, Richard.
The owner of this rig probably doesn't know how lucky he was. It might've gotten to a fake tech who would've charged him more for the repair than the rig is worth. It needs this. It needs that. Oh by the way it needs 10 of everything. We all know their out there. Good clip Mike. Thanks 73
Just bought a Cobra 29lx from their Ebay store and there is no sound at all. Taking this to my electrician friend with this video in hand so he knows what to poke around in. Thanks
Hey there @AJ-sh8uv. It's a cloudy and windy day today 50 degrees and spring is on the way. I am new to this. Just quickly typing out to ask if you plan to be active on CB radio? I have been looking around on ebay for radios and tried to order a CB radio thorugh ebay. Richard.
Thanks for the information. I have a cobra 45xlr with the same problem however there is no internal speaker. It's the AM/FM CB and you must connect external speakers. It does transmit and the audio is fantastic but It doesn't receive on CB or the broadcast bands. I'm going to open it up when I get time. I'm hoping to find something simple like a broken wire or bad connection. I would really like to get this rig working again.
Used to have a Cobra 148DX back in the 80s in the UK with a Starduster antenna, it smashed everything around. Back then, we were pirates on AM breaking on Channel 14 going by the handle of Rough Rider. Happy days long gone by.
Mike it's got a 470 electrolytic ..it's got a peak swing mod .at back left real I bet it's been tuned I'm sure ...but great teaching ..73s Justin 5180 9lb 🔨
I just got a trc30-a and I'm having a no recieve issue, I receive static, and it seems like it's working but I have no idea I'm brand new to the cb , I seem to be transmitting fine. But I can't tell yet, assuming she needs some tlc and some repair work.. checked the external speaker. I got a pair of powered ones it's like an aux jack... It did work but static is the same. When I opened her up I can't even tell what I'm looking at
nice little video ,great to see people still work on CB stuff . What ever happened to A/S ? I have a brand new relay for a Super Scanner if you need one lol🇨🇦
So what happens when you have a cb that transmits clear as day but even at 25ft apart or less I can't receive anything? Like the speaker definitely works sometimes I very rarely pick up random transmissions from other truck drivers and the noaa stations come through But when I am trying to talk to a co worker at a plant we load at or our yard even if we are like 25 feet apart I get nothing. Same cb as this. But my portable cobra hh50wxst does the same thing and I can't understand why and all it has for adjustments is just squelch... even tried a different antenna still nothing.
Noooooooooooo. I spent the last 20 years collecting test equipment and your telling me I don't need any of it. My life's a failure! But On the other hand if you don't need it anymore can I have all your test gear. My best regards Chris.
+AllTheGearNoIdea No, if you work on communications equipment of course you need test equipment. This just shows the average person that with nothing but a spare speaker they can test their radio. Might save them the expense of having to send a radio to someone like me for repair when it was something they could repair themselves.
So that's a no to giving me all your test gear then ? - Well I guess that will keep my wife happy. Regards Chris. PS my channel is about test equipment.
I have an cobra 29 lx chr le with echo tune that’s not working at all, so I decided to open the cover to find out the bolts that hold the speaker to the cover was on the mother board, my question is would it effect the cab from working ?
I have a Cobra 29 LTD with the side mike. eBay special. I removed the lids to inspect the insides. Someone disconnected all the wires from the pa/cb switch. The pink and orange wires are twisted together. The white wire from the rear of the circuit panel that says pa is just laying in there. And a yellow wire next to the r114 circuit spliced to the red wire next to the vr1 circuit. I’m assuming these 5 wires go back to the pa/cb switch but I’m not sure in what order. Why would someone disconnect that switch to begin with? The wires are just laying there spliced together
Yep, Yep, Yep That was it! I laid my cd on top of center console plugged it all back up, opened up the back end and turned the power on low volume. I took an old home theater speaker out to my truck and hooked up a +/- to the home speaker. then I touched the +/- wires to the bad speaker and Guess what! He's alive Igor!'
Mike - what if a radio will transmit (and has audio), but the radio has good speaker, but no sound?? PA works, too. Caps were tested and are good. What should a person look at then?
I've never been lucky enough to have only a speaker issue. Well one time on my Stryker 955 I use an external speaker in my truck but bring in and use it as a base with interal. Turned it on and no sound. Turns out the speaker had come unplugged from the pcb. I first thought the transmit had gone bad. Where is Mike? He must have really found something good to abandon working on radios.
ok so I have a beautiful mint Royce 620 base...it has audio but will not produce sound,,i tried a external speaker and it still has no volume...help! can anyone give me an idea of how to diagnose and repair?
Mine the speaker pops but no sound. I can turn squelch up and down and it does the pop noise. It's not the speaker? An antenna not being hooked up cause this?
Another way to check audio ic is with pre amp ..and a way to check to see real fast and true I use the pa switch and speaker to check for audio ic output
So what if when I turn my radio on (uniden bearcat pc787) and it beeps loud. But incoming transmissions are very quiet. It's also very quiet through an external speaker. I'm new to this.
ok I have a 2014 volvo vnl, it has the standard cobra 29, I have to right on another truck ass to get them to hear me, my meter light is out, and my ant light comes on when i key the mic and it flashes when I Talk
SWR / antenna problem. SWR's too high, bad antenna ground, pinched/bad coax cable. The antenna light comes on if the swr's are too high, indicating an antenna system problem. If your swr's are too high the radio won't transmit far or receive that great.
My Vhf radio not receving; FM sound OK; When I tried sending with another radio (Waki Talki) in same room; it`s ok so it`s not the speaker; could it be something to do with antenna ??? Greeting From Malta-Europe. Tks in advance, xxx
I have a cobra 25 st and it only transmitts about 10 percent. On the back corner where the final is located after about 15 minutes the metal gets so hot you can't touch. It has a 25 watt final in it. I am pretty sure the final is bad but would that cause the metal to get that hot? THANKS,ROBERT
+ROBERT SANDLIN Cobra 25's don't have 25 watt finals. If it's getting that hot it's possible the final is shorted. Check the voltages at the final and compare to the normal operating voltages in the service manual.
I know this is a old 4 year old post , I know the Sandlin's from Texas that owned all the Tiger Truck Stops in Texas and Louisiana , was this your radio ??
Yes, it's common. They fail sooner than later. The faceplate luminescent decal is what fails. The hotter and more humid the weather they are exposed to the faster they fail.
Is that a common problem with these rigs Mike? in my experience, I rarely see a bad speaker in a radio other than those that have been physically damaged. Maybe they just ain't making those voice coils like they used to. ATYB Doug.
Good video. Very true comment about the speaker and humidity, I had a recent AR-3500 (pristine!) that had been stored in a basement, and the speaker was shot.
I have a similar problem but my speaker works. I can get sound when I switch to weather broadcast. The tx/rx light is lit. Mike works, i can transmit power but won't receive at all. No movement on the needle even with a handheld right next to it. Antena works on my uniden. I left it on one time and when I came back to it, it wasn't receiving. Im thinking it's got to be a capacitor or transistor but visual inspection.. Everything looks good. I do have a fluke and an o-scope. Where should I start probing?
@@johnnycurry6618 never did find the problem but, I just use it with an external speaker now. If i were to guess 4 years later, I would say it has to do with the circuit that senses that you've plugged in an external speaker and to switch output. Maybe a transistor?
I wish it was that easy. I have an hr2510, have replaced audio IC, caps, speaker is good. Everything works but no audio to a speaker externt or internal. I can't figure it out
The mic plug is probably faulted. It happens often from the wire bending back and forth a lot and the wire inside breaks. Any cb shop could fix it for $5-10 in about 5 minutes. Or you could buy a new mic.
I have a question if you have a second to respond. I have a galaxy dx99v that someone has done a lot of hack mods to, one being to pull TR32. Will a 2n222 or similar work in its place? Thanks in advance, love your channel, i want to learn more but only as a hobby.
@@mikesradiorepair thank you for getting back to me, i greatly appreciate it. I'll have to pull one out of an old uniden i have. I see on the schematic it has that specific transistor. The only transistors i keep in my parts supply bin are a bunch of old radio shack ones. I sure miss not having a radio shack
+TheDefpom You looking for these? www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/cui-inc/MJ-3536N/CP-3536N-ND/281264 For me here in the US it's 10 times more speakers than jacks. A lot of rain in this country in many parts so humidity kills them.
unfortunately did not help me my radio sends but no receive. Its not the speaker. I replaced every capacitor in it. It really is a strong transmitter now but no receive? the needle on the meter does not show incoming signal activity? But it shows transmitting and I can hear it on my bench radio I use to see if a radio is transmitting. I have several radios that wont receive I cannot fix don't know how ? Some look like brand new radios. I changed the protection diode it didnt help the old diode test out good. the PA still works loud some one destroyed D11 its actually too crazy loud now. I think Im going to loose my 35 bucks on this one.
I get a pop noise but I don't hear any static or anything from any of the stations. There's no way that nobody is talking on other stations I was just hearing sound moments ago. After I messed with the antenna I unplugged the antenna messed with the coax and now there's no sound
I just fixed one i got for 5 bucks. Someone hooked positive and negitive up backwards, blew the protection diode but not before blowing a hole in the audio modulator ic
If you had a hole in the TA2227AP audio chip then they put in a 15 to 20 amp fuse after the normal fuse blew when they reversed the leads ... I have seen many many radios come in my 2 way radio shop like that.....
MikesRadioRepair sweet I’ll have to pick one up. I have a question for you I have an old RadioShack cb that receives but transmits a nasty buzzing sound when I key the mic the swr is about 1.5 on channel 1 and about 2.5 on 40 I have not tuned the antenna for the radio yet
