I'm kinda new to 944s, I have recently acquired an '86 944 Turbo and I've noticed the headlights won't come on or pop-up if the car is not running. Is that normal?
It could be a sign your battery is no longer healthy, and can't supply the required voltage to trip the relay and turn the motor unless the alternator is helping it. We had a similar problem where the radio wouldn't tune in our station unless the car was running, weird I know. New bat fixed it.
Dear DIY Dan, I have the same problem in a 2,5liter 944 from 1985, but the Grey cable has no voltage with ignition on and headlight switch on? Do you have any further hints for me? Thanks, By the way, great video!
@@lilratzu6622 the gray/blu wire 56k gets its power from the headlight switch when on. Even if your other lights work when you turn the switch on, it could be failing or dirty inside and not giving power out 56k to feed your gray wire.
Usually a sign that the commutator is worn. Its a rotary switch with 12 odd contacts of copper that have insulation between them. When new, the insulation is below the outside diameter of copper, so the brushes can only touch copper. Wear it down enough, and the air gaps disappear and the insulation and copper are both on the running surface. The brush might stop exactly between copper segments and sit on the insulation giving your "open circuit, no run". When you hit it, your shifting the brush over to a position where it makes contact with copper again. Easy repair is to scrape the required air gaps a second time.
Anything before 1999 (except for the Boxster) is extremely well built. Porsche really did design these cars to last a lifetime. I have two 944 Turbos and a 928S4 and I love them. Both of these cars have been great to me. Just keep in mind if you buy one that has been abused it will cost you. Just make sure the timing belt, fuel lines, and motor mounts have been recently done since those are the big ticket items.
Picked up another S3 Memorial Day....Hans had a buddy selling one. Garnet Red with Porsche Script cloth interior. Ran the PPS...it's a M900 "Tourist Delivery" which makes it one of 20 in 85...and the cloth makes it likely a 1 of 1. 4 care packages from Roger on the Garage floor waiting to get installed.
