NORTH GEORGIA PART 4 - Georgia isn't really known for its trout fishing. However the Appalachian mountain range reaches as far south as Georgia and has some of the most beautiful water I've ever fished. North Georgia is the farthest south that trout can survive in the Southeast of America. These mountains are full of brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout (the only trout native to the area).
In this video we were lucky enough to catch ALL of the wild species of trout to North Georgia! We call it the "trout trifecta" and we managed to do it all with wild, stream born trout. The Native Brook Trout gave us the most trouble but we were able to catch a couple in a small tributary before heading back to the main stream. After a long day of fishing we decided to camp, but instead of setting a tent we set up our vehicles to be able to sleep in them.

Tip I learned for Georgia (not absolute but mostly accurate) - look on topo map, if stream is below 2,000 ft elevation very likely to NOT have any wild brookies, above 2200 good chance they are there somewhere

Hit me up if you are ever in the Rabun County area, me and some TU buddies can point you in the right direction as long as the creek names remain nameless!

I’m 69 and I’m trying to do more fly fishing in our RV full time travels, I’m almost starting over it’s been so long. I’m amazed at your ability to cast in tight quarters and hike in rough terrain in waders and wading boots. What boots do you have and are they rubber or felt?My Simms boots are rubber and find them a little slippery on the rocks. Do you ever tear your waders hiking through the brush? We were camping near Clemson on Lake Hartwell and went to Smithgall Woods State Park to fish Duke Creek. It’s special,regulation water where they only allow 15 anglers in the morning and 15 anglers in the afternoon on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday only. You have to call to reserve a spot. Caught four rainbow that looked wild the largest only 10” but there are supposed to be 20” in the creek. It was a good location for me to practice. We moved to the southern boundaries of Great Smokey Mountains NP and fished the West Fork of the Pigeon River in the delayed harvest section for an afternoon and caught a 12” Rainbow and 12” Brook. They stock this stream with these species. I’d never caught a Brook trout this large. We are heading to Colorado in June to spend the whole summer at various locations where I can fish.

I have rubber souls but my brother has felt. I would 100% recommend felt or at least studded boots just because it doses get slick. I haven't torn my waders walking through brush but I'd watch out for briers. I purposefully avoid them at all costs. But it's awesome that you're getting out there again! I'd love to travel full time and fish in different places but for now I just go on the weekends when I can. Glad you old get on some fish in Great Smokey Mountain NP! And thanks for watching the videos.

I've noticed you turning your rod sideways when you make short roll casts is it just habbit or is it helpful in some way? Thanks
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 3 года назад
As long as I'm understanding the question properly I point the rod in the direction I want to cast. Sometimes that involved turning the rod sideways. I also do it because a lot of times there is brush overhead and I want the fly to stay as low as possible, so my roll casts occasionally look ugly. But I do it for a reason.

What you call a "trifecta" we Georgians call the "Appalachian slam". Not a lot of creeks left in Georgia where you can do that. I was there 3 days after you released this video and did the same. My favorite creek system in Georgia by far.
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 3 года назад
Yeah I had a few others tell me this! I had never personally called it that, although I'm from a bit farther north. But yeah I love that system for that reason. May not catch giants, but catching all 3 wild species is always a treat. Thanks for watching!
