Apparently the Golden is now recognized as its own species (IUCN, IGFA), and even the subspecies (Little Kern Golden, Kern River Rainbow) are being taxonomically classed under the O. aguabonita species, instead of O. mykiss; it's a great day for us Golden fans!

Dr. Bob was such a great guy. He made time for me to talk to him about catch and release philosophy while at CSU and I wasn't even a fisheries student, just some guy writing a paper for an English class. It was always a big deal when he showed up at the local TU meeting.

More people need to watch this. I see youtubers misidentify their catch all the time. I've gotten pretty good but not perfect. I can usually tell after I land it but sometimes it's hard to tell in the water. It's amazing how many people don't do the research and also how much inaccurate information is out there. With how informative this video is, it only scratches the surface lol.

Thank you for differentiation of what an actual golden trout is. It makes me so happy to see someone acknowledge that. I live in San Diego and we have too much heat for native trout in most of our areas. So stocked trout in the winter is the only option. One of the hatcheries stocks palomino trout and I hate when someone calls them golden trout. The lakes here in the winter look like northeast rivers on April 1st...

Very interesting stuff Ben. I'm over in NJ an all are Rainbows are stocked fish. Now if I go to NY they have the Cutthroat, which from my understanding are trout that go out to a bay/lake or bigger body of water then return to a river to breed. They use to stock Browns (I haven't caught one yet) but that ended prior to me moving here. Brookies are the native/wild fish here but they're really small like 10" is HUGE! Idk, it's a lot to take in for a Floridian like myself. 🎣🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

I've had to correct people on the golden trout topic. The palomino was actually developed in Pennsylvania or one of those eastern states and in california we call them lightning trout. The true golden trout is in my opinion the crown jewel of trout and I hope to catch one someday. Even the golden trout is divided into 3 the volcano creek golden,the little kern golden and the kern rainbow

Brown trout are eurotrash fish.....😂. Not native. Coastal cutties look the most like rainbows imo. The slash is only thing to tell the difference. Palomino trout is NOT a golden trout. I see so many east coast idiots calling them golden trout. True golden trout are native to the Kern river drainage of Northern California. I’m glad you made this video because I’ve had to explain this to idiots. Bull trout char and dolly varden are almost the exact same fish just subspecies of each other. All have pink and white spots Arctic char and Dolly’s in Alaska are basically considered the same fish to the ADFG. Dolly’s and char both have sea run versions but not all of them go to the sea as the ones on kenai river are resident year round etc.

Salmo Trutta are not actually native to Asia, but there are closely related species of the same genus that are in Asia. Further East again there are Lenok trout belonging to the Genus Brachymystax, and on the Pacific coast of Asia, there are Rainbow trout and their cousin the Cherry trout/salmon Oncorhynchus masou.

Hey, new subscriber, binge watching all your vids. The alpine lakes I fish have cross breeds of, rainbows, cut throats, and maybe browns? Catch and release mostly except for a couple for the camping fry pan. My question is some will look like rainbows/cut but have white flesh some with red flesh. Do you know why? I've tried doing some research on it but coming up with nothing. Will browns also cross breed?

Their diet determines the color of the meat. Rainbows and cutthroats will spawn with each other. Browns will sometimes hybridize with brook trout, but not rainbows or cutthroats.

@@HugeFlyFisherman Thanks for getting back to me. They will have that much of a change in diet from the same alpine lake? One looks like salmon and the other looks like haddock. Going up camping and catching next weekend I will take pics, its not fishing there its trying to cast to the one you want. Best fly fishing 10'-15' casting, sight fishing. They are alpine so 14" is Huge. :) Yeah I used your trademark.

arctic char, white spotted char are chare dolly's are a different weird chare thing. Bulls, Brooks, Lakers, drakes and splakes, are a river shark thing and I think a taiman is vary similar to a bull but in a slightly different jenis. Dolly's and bulls are not the same.

So can the cutbows produce viable offspring? I live in New England and there is a stream near me with wild rainbows, and they tend to have a cutthroat marking, but I've never heard of cutthroats in the east?

They're not palominos though. They're golden rainbow trout. At least those that you showed in the video (yes, there is a difference). Palomino trout are not that yellow. I'm not sure about other states, but palominos haven't been stocked in PA since the 70s.

Palominos are the result of crossing a golden rainbow with a regular rainbow. It mutes the coloration. Golden rainbows were first discovered in a West Virginia hatchery. I dont hate them, but also they draw people to the same spots and literally everyone tries to cast for them, which I find deeply annoying. They do kinda look like goldfish as well.
