This video is a celebration of the white trout lily (Erythronium albidum) and its various spring ephemeral neighbors. We even talk about the threat of invasive species like garlic mustard (Alliara petiolata).

We killed off honeysuckle and were rewarded with 2 large colonies of White Trout lily. Only 2 bloomed and on one something ate the flower. Also a mystery, in a former dog pen, pure mud when we moved here, Yellow Trout Lily, not recorded in this county however, I did not plant it and most likely no former occupant ever planted it. It came up around a tree, nearby a nice colony of fragile fern has grown. History of the area was horse farm no tilling.

History of the area before horse farm...woodland? ;)

@@markjones5561 Yes a lowland wooded area along a creek heading strait to the Sangamon River. We are on the bluff over that creek. This property was sprayed with weed spray, sprout deterrent, and anti fungal spray for 17 years. They left us the records. Now we have native plants, morels of 2 species, toadstools, other fungi. Our first spring in 2004, it all grew up and thousands of Dandelions in greasy chemical soil. We mulch our plants and leaves every fall and feed the soil. Plus planted some native plants and bushes. The shingle oak out front had butt rot (bubbling black goo), but having native plants around it healed it. Happy wildlife everywhere. It is an amazing property. Have seen an amazing amount of wild life in this property over the years. BTW we love dandelions and we are eating some for breakfast tomorrow with a couple of home grown shiitakes and one oyster mushrooms and if lucky a morel or two.

@@RJack1915 that is great and welcome news. To know a land can recover from such a seemingly destroyed state. That makes me very happy .

Along Norris lake we have yellow trout lillys. They look like trouts with their one leaves all going in one direction as if in a river.

Loved the vid, nice job! Funny to see as I participated in a Garlic Mustard pull with FPCC over the weekend and noticed an amazing swath of White Trout Lily :)

I'm curious. Is the strategy of not forming mycorrhizal relationships and even killing local fungi one that is employed by native toothwort species also?

It's fascinating seeing Alliaria in an invasive context, it's native in the UK and I'm always glad to see it in spring. I think your trout lillies are more beautiful though.

Hey!! Do you think you could talk with a botanist and forager named Arthur Haines? Remaining in line with the topic of the video, trout lily corms are edible, as is garlic mustard (the leaves). One is preferable to eat over the other (abundance/conservation-wise, not taste-wise)

Nice to see so many spring ephemerals in one place! Do you ever see Trillium nivale in your area? I love that species. BTW, where are you from in NY? I grew up there too, but now live on the other side of the world.

Yes, we are very lucky to have a few decent size T. nivale populations in our area. In fact, we featured that species in our very first video :) I grew up about an hour south of Buffalo.

As an older fan, I wish the sound were better, but this is wonderful stuff....I could watch all day!

This is such cool stuff....I would be interested on your take on hawk weeds (hybridization, allelopathy, etc.). We are seeing profound changes as a result, and I need something to show people to learn about them. :)

There's something interesting about calling an invasive species "noxious" it's just doing it's thing, trying to live. It's a fitting relative term but somewhat simplistic

This is because to get people's attention the message needs to be pretty simplistic, because when they bother to look up from their glowing screen all they see is a wall of green. Alliaria IS a beautiful plant "doing its thing" in the environment where it evolved, and has its share (including humans) of predators that keep the population in check. Where it is introduced, those limits do not exist, and the native plant, at home with its population controls in place has no chance against a larger plant that does not need the soil fungi and has no population check after an airplane ride across the ocean. It simply shades out the other plants...not just this plant, but every one in the vicinity! Going in to try to protect these plants causes damage to the natives as well, but is the lesser of two evils.

It's not the lesser of two evils unless you consider death inherently problematic
