Well presented without the "um's", "ah's" and pauses. I am a kayak user os likely I will limit to a 3 to 4 pound ball once I get rigged up. Thanks; nice fish too!

Man I’m trying to get out to one of these lakes next.. can’t decide which one! Oroville or berryessa, Folsom, pardee.. new melones .. now you throw don pedro in the mix too! Some of them I’ve never been to.. yeah lead core works fine.. especially if you’re from a kayak .. but if you have a boat you really should invest in some down riggers.. tight lines bro!

Great video! Thanks! I am new to downriggers and have resisted for years because I prefer to hold the rod (the tug is a drug). I am getting into downrigging due to the obvious limitations of long lines. Is the humming nose of the cable normal? You typically run about 100 get set back? Thanks again! I live in Fair Oaks if you ever need a fishing Buddy
@ReelLifeFisherman
@ReelLifeFisherman 3 года назад
Thanks for watching the video and glad you liked it! Yes the humming on the cable is completely normal.. I don’t mind it but some guys hate it! I’ve learned to use it as a tool.. if the pitch changes a little I know my speed has changed.. and when it changes tune completely.. I know my line has popped out of the clip or a fish is on.. if the humming bothers you you need to switch to braid on the downrigger.. unless you run electric cannons.. then you can’t.. yes typically I run 75 to 100’ in depths less than 40’ if I’m deeper the set backs get less and less.. thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions.. tight lines 🎣

@ReelLifeFisherman
@ReelLifeFisherman 4 года назад
Mark C awesome glad you like the video! That is the beauty with the speedy shiners you can troll them at many different speeds.. even at slower speeds by putting a bend in them.. but I find out of the package they work best between 2.7 and 3.5 you can troll much faster and cover more water.. thanks for watching! Tight lines!
@markc3986

Thanks for the feedback. I can’t wait to try it out. I’ve done the big lake trolling and always find myself looking for steelhead and browns so I’m gonna start targeting them. Plus I can get out more days to go after them if I’m on smaller water and can go by myself (I’m gettin old ) Tight lines to you too brother

I recently got a down rigger to try out for trout. What is the least amount of weight you recommend? I got a big ball weight of 12oz. Trout only at 10-20 feet deep. Foo you use a gas motor or strictly electric when using them?
@irey1978
@irey1978 3 года назад
those are some beautiful trout! I new to trolling let alone down rigging. Kinda confused a bit that 8-10 ball weight, does that say on your line while you reeling in the fish?
@ReelLifeFisherman
@ReelLifeFisherman 3 года назад
No your line clips into a release clip.. when the fish hits the lure it (should) pop out of the clip.. then you are on with just the fish on your lure.. the weight stays down until you bring it back up.. hopefully that makes sense.. thanks for watching and commenting.. let me know if you have any questions..

Good video. Do you have an electric trolling on your bow just for steering? I'm actually thinking of doing that.
@ReelLifeFisherman
@ReelLifeFisherman 2 года назад
Yes it helps control the boat much better and using the kicker to push it saves battery on the trolling motor.. and with Ipilot you can control the boat and fish .. thanks for watching

@@ReelLifeFisherman i have a fishin barge 20 dlx abd just ordered the minn kota terrova 80 thurst after watching your video im going to attempt the same install myself do you think i will be ok trolling with this alone since my main motor is a mecury 90
@ReelLifeFisherman
@ReelLifeFisherman 3 года назад
It would be ok get group 31s though.. depending on wind you could get anywhere between 4 to 6 hrs or so constant trolling.. you can use the gas motor with a trolling plate to help get longer times.. just make sure you run the motor at higher rpms to keep the 4 stroke from “making oil” it happens when people troll too much with 4 strokes bigger than 60hp
@ReelLifeFisherman
@ReelLifeFisherman 3 года назад
Only need to rip the boat across the lake a few times for a whole day of trolling if using the gas motor to push.. with trolling plate

I'm an old school fisherman who is brand new to fishing with manual down riggers. I've tried sitting in one place, for hours and hours, watching the sonar in delight of the massive schools of trout swimming by at max depths. I've tried jigging for trout using everything from power bait, to salmon eggs, to wet flies (Wooly Buggers) to jig heads and more often than not I've gotten skunked. That being said people said get down riggers so I did. But now I'm wondering about what is the minimum amount of line to let out, when using down riggers? Would 20, 30, 40 feet work? Because were I will be fishing "100" feet of line at say 60 feet for less than 50 yards seems like it would cause "issues" or require constant adjustment of the depth of the down riggers and obviously a very close eye on the sonar because of the sudden changes in depth on most of the bodies of water that are trout lakes and are close to me. Being on a strict budget also plays a role. I'm using manual mini down riggers and trolling rods with line counting reels and 10lb mono with and without floro leaders. Thanks for any help you may have to offer. I'm really excited but want to avoid creating any issues in getting those tight lines we all love.
@ReelLifeFisherman
@ReelLifeFisherman Год назад
So they of course have very expensive electric down riggers that can adjust themselves up and down to stay a programmable depth off bottom . But they are very expensive. I would recommend keeping your eye on the sonar and you should pick up your weight on the graph. Then when you see fish a a certain depth target that range.. if you need to go deeper or closer to the actual bottom then run pencil style weights the won’t hang up as much or as bad if they do . Thank you for watching and commenting let me know if you have questions
@thedreadpiratefisherman5325
@@ReelLifeFisherman Thanks for the prompt reply. I'm assuming the line length plays a key role so can I get away with less than 100 feet of line off the weight? Or will reducing it to 30 feet off the weight cause it to produce no or fewer bites?

Why do you use Minn Kota with a lawrance fish finder? Since you cant use the gps and autopilot?
@ReelLifeFisherman
@ReelLifeFisherman 3 года назад
The minn kota has its own gps and autopilot.. it’s called an i-pilot.. linking a humminbird to it won’t give you much more then the minn kota can do all by itself.. and why would you want to go back to your fish finder when you have a remote around your neck? Also not a fan of humminbird operating system on their units.. and the amount of money you have to spend on a humminbird to get one with touch screen is outrageous.. those are all the reasons.. lol thanks for the question and let me know if you have any others.. thanks for watching
@HerbZilla
@HerbZilla 3 года назад
@@ReelLifeFisherman So your saying you can create GPS routes, save the routes, and play the routes and have your trolling motor or kicker take you along the route hands free without it being connected to your fish finder and just using the remote? Just trying to figure out the major companies sespool of garbage of information on all these systems haha
@ReelLifeFisherman
@ReelLifeFisherman 3 года назад
The ipilot can save waypoints and record routes all from within the remote.. you can also new get a Garmin reactor 40 kicker auto pilot that turns the kicker into a gps remote controlled device! It’s one of the upgrades on my list! I have now switched to Garmin fish finders I now have 2 Garmin 93sv’s that are networked together.. let me know anytime if you have any questions..
