I think part of what may have fueled Aikman’s attitude about Switzer was Jerry’s attitude that anyone could coach the team that he put together. Problems often start at the top.

Once Jerry ran Jimmy off it was only a matter of time before the collapse. Jerry Jones is the worse thing ever to happen to the Dallas Cowboys. The 3 additional Super bowls were great, but over all it has been a complete disaster for the past 23 years.

I'm not even a massive fan of american sports but these mini documentaries are so well done, I have watched them all because they are so good.

I've always blamed Jerry more than Barry. Barry had more pressure at Oklahoma than Dallas, it's almost like he was helping out a friend (Jerry) by being coach of the Cowboys. Jerry should have hired from the staff after Jimmy left.

With all that drama going on, i still wonder how that ‘95 team won the Super Bowl.

Jimmy, Barry, and Jerry all went to Arkansas and Switzer (OC) and Johnson (DL) both coached together at Oklahoma from 1970-72. How about that.

How 'bout them Cowboys! At least this story has a happy ending; Jerry Jones stayed on as Owner/GM and the Cowboys have sucked ever since (aside from a brief bout of mediocrity in the mid 2000s). Nothing better than that.

Food for thought. From 1991-1993, Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys were 36-12 in the regular season, 7-1 in the playoffs, and they won 2 Super Bowls. From 1994-1996, Barry Switzer's Cowboys were 34-14 in the regular season, 5-2 in the playoffs, and they won 1 Super Bowl. The only differences between the two resumes is that Switzer sat out most of his starters in losses in the last game of the 1994 and 1996 regular season. In terms of the playoffs, Switzer's 1994 Cowboys lost to a 49er team that was better than the 49er teams that Johnson's Cowboys defeated in 1992 and 1993. In addition, the 1995 Cowboy's roster consisted of 26 players that never played a down for Jimmy Johnson. This included Hall of Famers Deion Sanders and Larry Allen. If one relies on the documented record, Barry Switzer did an outstanding job coaching the Dallas Cowboys.

Jimmy was an awesome coach no doubt and his iron fisted disciplined approach payed off with 2 super bowl wins. However, Jimmy's hard nosed style couldn't last forever. Barry was much better than people give him credit for. Switzer had to fight several battles shortly after being named head coach of the Dallas Cowboys that included the following; 1. The Texas media hated Switzer from the time he crossed over the Texas line. Dale Hansen, Randy Galloway didn't give him a fair shake. Dale even admitted he was too tough on Barry during his tenure as coach. It almost was as bad as the media toward Trump today. 2. Aikman was still sore with Switzer from his college days and never warmed up to Barry ( nor wanted to). 3. Barry's coaching style was always different from Johnson's. Barry was a "players coach" who excelled at recruiting players in college and encouraging players to make the most of their abilities. He always had his players back and Switzers players in college always loved and respected him. This style of coaching served him well in college as his 3 college championships prove. when he got to the NFL he stuck with that approach. Not to say he couldn't or wouldn't discipline but yes he wasn't the strict disciplinarian that Jimmy was. Aikman detested this approach but in all honesty It's probably what the cowboy's needed after 3 hard years of grinding. That kind of hard nose coaching has an expiration date. Also there's no guarantees Jimmy would have one another super bowl. 4. Jerry became more intrusive with the team after Jimmy's departure which was out of Switzer's power to control. Switzer also was limited by Jerry on coaches and assistants Switzer could bring on. 4. Switzer hadn't coached college football in several years when he received the call and had never coached in the NFL. Despite all these challenges, Switzer managed to Win a superbowl, go to the playoffs most of the time and racked up a winning percentage that exceeds any other Dallas Cowboys coach. Plus he's one of only a few coaches to have won a championship at both the college and pro level. Not bad for a guy who only coached the Cowboys for 4 years and whose supposedly a bad fit for Dallas. Kind of interesting that Switzer is the last coach to bring Dallas a Superbowl and that was almost 25 years ago.

Y'all can clown on Barry all you want but he was an overall good coach. He was the best college coach in the 70s and was still an elite college coach in the 80s. Give him some credit, he won more Super Bowls than other Hall of Fame head coaches. Also, give Jerry Jones credit as well, if I recall correctly he was the general manager and was responsible for getting some of the Franchise best players and future Hall of Famers. Jimmy Johnson was one hell of a coach but don't act like Jerry didn't contribute.

As evidenced by Aikman's appreciation of Switzer advocating for him to UCLA head coach Terry Donahue, there was no real beef between the two in college. It's important to note that Aikman had significant beefs with all of his NFL head coaches, so this was a case of Troy being Troy. To put Switzer's NFL accomplishments in their proper perspective, no head coach in the Super Bowl Era won more playoff games in his first 3 seasons than Barry Switzer, he was the most successful NFL head coach in that 3 year (e.g., 1994-1996) period, and he came close to duplicating what Jimmy Johnson did in Dallas from 1991-1993. The 1995 Cowboy's Super Bowl winning roster was comprised of 27 players that never played a down for Johnson and included HOF's Deion Sanders and Larry Allen. Switzer's playoff win total is also more than the combined playoff win total of the next 5 Cowboy head coaches. Switzer's 5-2 playoff record was followed by Chan Gailey 0-2, Dave Campo 0-0, Bill Parcells 0-2, Wade Phillips 1-2, and Jason Garrett 2-3. If one relies on documented fact as opposed to perception, Barry was a great college coach and a good NFL coach.

Aikman was drafted in 89. Some say the best draft of all time. Prime time, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, were all picked behind only Aikman and of course, Tony Mandarich (The Incredible Bust). It’s hard to believe now that cowboy fans were angry that they didn’t take Mandarich over Aikman....Until you see Mandarich at MSU, and you will realize he should have been the most sure, NFL ready, player in that draft. We will never see a collegeOffensive tackle on the sports illustrated cover again. But that’s how good Mandarich was at Michigan State And do not comment steroids, cheater Ect. Steroids are part of pro football, especially in the trenches. He took a popular oral drug used buy bodybuilders in a bulking phase to gain Mass And Strength. Definitely more of a steroid for GymRats trying to show off on the bench, than move a 310 pound frame in front of big 10 Defensive Ends. It obviously helped but the work had to be put in, and that’s why supplement companies have been trying to tweak its structure for years, introducing it with a different name and slightly different ingredient, and sold as prohormone. Superdrol being one that comes to mind and was sold at local supplement stores for years until Obama banned it.
