SYNC on these radios, is just SSB, they can't do proper SYNC. On the PL-680/660 the sound is so much better and on the Sangean ATS 909-x2 on SSB so you can use ECSS, these tecsun DSP radios, and many other DSP radios just don't work properly on SSB. In fact, I really regretted selling my S2000 for a pl-880, didn't learn my lesson though as I bought the S8800 which I sold, still didn't learn and got the PL-990x, none of these radios work properly on SSB radio with bad sound quality. So I sold the 880, S8800 and will sell the 990x soon and I'm looking out for an S-2000 again. Non of these radios have a working 4 Khz filter except the newest PL-330, funny enough that actually sounds a lot better on SSB, far clearer audio though still some of the distortion and the 4 Khz filter works, but, the muting when tuning is annoying. I was very surprised that the 330 works so well with an external antenna even at night, it's a shame the 990x and 501 turned out so bad. I'll never part with my PL-680, I will sell the 990x and probably sell on the Sangean too and get another S2000 or maybe a 2nd hand satellite 800 if I can find one.

It is hard to judge since none are that great compared to Sony 2010.

Not a hope, the sync on the 680 is far better, it's proper SYNC, on the h501, 880, and 990 they just use SSB, it's far from being proper sync. On SSB the 680 sounds far superior and makes using ECSS possible, it's just too bad sounding on the h501, PL-880/990 or even the S8800, I'd avoid all the dsp radios with the exception of the pl-330 which is tiny but sounds a lot better but does have that muting while tuning but works great with external antenna.

I'm returning my eton field like we talked about. I really liked it but it's got too many problems. Now it only stays turned in if it's below half volume. What gives with that you recon?

I use the Bonito MA305, works great with receivers and has much lower noise than long wire or ham radio style antenna which can overload most radios with the exception of the sangean ats 909 x2 which works amazingly well with external antennas particularly ham style long wires, dipoles, end fed half wave, G5RV etc. The Bonito really pulls in the DX.

The 501x version has the leatherette case and English documentation, the H501 docs are in Chinese and the case is padded hard plastic with a molded handle: no shoulder strap.

The malahit, malachite Russian or Chinese radios are surely the most interesting! And the price is reasonable The 501 has great audio and easier functionality but it is very similar to all other dsp radios. There is no way I would pay the price for this radio. I will keep my xhdata and I've got one of malahit chinese clones on the way.

@@bartnave9811 There's a new version of the Russian Malachite too and I've been told this is the one I will receive. I'm sure the H501 is a great sounding radio on AM,FM and SW but these radios fail miserably on SSB and the radios are too expensive to have these issues.

You think this radio at $298 is overpriced? Well, in my country, this overrated radio is 430€.

Unfortunately, the price of electronics especially computer stuff has gone through the roof. The demand for used radios is out of sight.
