Just because a pen blank blows out does not mean it is lost. Even though this one cracked pretty deep I was able to put it back together so that it looked liked no more than the design.
Steps:
1. Put plenty of CA glue on the parts and hold together with a clamp
2. I let it set overnight or so and setup real good
3. Carefully finished drilling it
4. Glued in the brass tube as far away from that end as possible
5. Turned it like normal
Why it happen in the first place? Probable Answers:
1. It got too hot because I did not clear or cool the bit
2. It had a crack there already
Looks like using a little water is a good idea to cool it and cut down on friction, will try this next time.
Also you can leave the end plenty long that the bit will punch through so that if this happens it will be outside of the needed area.
