Very nice wood working. That's a lot of planning and fitting.
@thatoscarguy9965
@thatoscarguy9965 Год назад
Can’t wait to finish mine. It’s going to be a monster though it’s 12 feet in the floor length and 17.5 overall. I’ve almost finished the wood structure. I’ll be finishing the roof and bed area as well as getting the tin on over the course of the next week. The issues I had with truck campers from manufacturer’s are lack of side door units, a lot less storage space than they could have especially when it comes to excessive windows, and dry bath units are very rare without slides. I really like side door units as they offer a really nice space on the opposite side and work much better with an awning along the length of the camper so the entrance can be underneath it. These are all being corrected in the unit I’m currently building. Have you looked into custom decals? I’m really looking forward to that when I’ve finished everything else.

If I had a 3/4 ton truck with a 8 foot bed that’s what I would build also
@thatoscarguy9965
@thatoscarguy9965 Год назад
@@robertcox2335 that’s what I’ve got (2012 f250 6.2 gas) but I might have to upgrade to a one ton I’ll have to finish it and get it weighed. If it was a diesel f250 I’d have no chance of having enough payload. It’s got a payload of 3200lbs and I’ve seen srw diesel 3500s with as little as 2800lbs of payload absolutely pathetic. I work at an rv dealership as one of the techs and we had a 3500 dually diesel that had a 9.5-10 foot arctic fox with one slide that weighed 3700lbs which is crazy. It’s right around the same weight as an average 18 foot trailer and the dually had a capacity of only 4000lbs so with just the driver and some gear it would be at the limit already.
@mrdorjjav
@mrdorjjav Год назад
Thats pretty huge, what do you think of mpg increase on gas vehicles?
@thatoscarguy9965
@thatoscarguy9965 Год назад
@@mrdorjjav it’s actually not terrible I get right around 600kms a tank without it and around 500 with a previous 11 foot camper on it. I live in Alberta and the gas mileage is actually easily worse in the winter I get around 450 a tank during that. Ultimately though I think the worse gas mileage compared to a diesel is still well worth having a vehicle with about an extra 1000 pounds of payload and being a fraction of the cost to maintain and repair. My father’s 2012 Chevrolet diesel had the head gasket go out on it at 230000kms and it was $1000 in parts $8000 for labor as the cab and whole front end needs to come off. If you’re towing heavy trailers all the time for work I think a diesel could certainly be worth getting otherwise I’d personally never go that route.

Amazing build, I’d be very proud of that work. Any advice or things you would do differently if done again would be appreciated. I have a 1-ton Chevy dually with an 8’ bed and I’m starting next weekend when some specialty tools get here.

You can get used slide in truck camper cheaper than you might think, depending on the condition. I saw a few today from the 90s that were decent but needed some TLC for 1500-2000, can't build one for that

I bet that thing is very heavy. If I was you i would of found an old pop up camper and tore it down to the frame. Building a nice one on that. Also you don't have to go through the nightmare of putting that in the bed and taking it out.

@@robertcox2335 so you would use less wood if you made another one where wood you trim the fat?
@robertcox2335
@robertcox2335 2 года назад
@@divineavengers some people have built smaller campers entirely out of xps foam. I thing I would want 1/8 ply on the front for impact resistance and some framing with 1x2s instead of 1x4s. If the top and lower corners were angled and interior walls were glued in it would add structural strength without framing. I’m still thinking about it but not reddy to start another one I may build a model to work out the details
