Truck Camping: 6 feet tall sleeping in a 5 foot bed

Hey Everyone! Sorry for being out of pocket for a few weeks, I've been very busy with a side project which has now come to an end. I made some tweaks to my platform bed sleeping set up and wanted to share them with you. My truck bed is only 5 feet long so I sleep diagonally to give myself a bit more space. This video shows a simple tweak to my truck camping set up which provides an additional 4-6" of sleeping length.

I’m getting divorced and lost my job 3 months ago so am selling off the house and am going to live in my Tacoma. I don’t really have a choice so this is a great idea as I am 5’11” thanks for making the video. Helps me get some things figured out in the crazy world

I'm dead serious jealous of you! I'm about 5'11 or 6' and I have a 2000 Rav4, with the seats removed in the back its amazing because its completely flat and square like a truck bed but inside the car. Absolutely prime for sleeping inside/vanlife but it only provides exactly 6' of room and I like to stretch and sleep with my arm above my head etc which adds another foot of room needed for me to be truly comfy. You can fit in so many cars/trucks spaces and even across the back seats effectively at 5'4, thats great

My 1500 has a 5’7” bed and I’m 5’11” I’m glad I came across your video. All the ones I’ve been researching have been at least 6’ beds. I will need to try your set up. I’m planning on utilizing my bed space for camping. Thanks brother 🤘🏼

Hey Brian, so glad I ran across your channel. I recently moved back to west Denver and want to camp out of my Toyota Tacoma short bed. I am a lover of the outdoors and 4-wheeling in the backcountry, but not brave enough to camp alone in a tent. Bears are a threat I don't want to mess with. I look forward to more of your tips. Also I am very interested in the good work you are doing with Trusty and CORE! What a great way to have fun and clean up the environment. Good work!

I'm also 6 feet tall, and was curious as to how you managed to stretch out in your 5 feet long bed. Cool setup. It looks really comfortable. Thanks for the video. It gives me ideas for my 5' 6" bed on my F-150.

Hey you answered my question about a diagonal bed arrangement, thx. I might cut an opening so I can put my raft motor in it, but I could still put my back seat up in the cab, I will smell it in either place. Or find a way to secure it on my trailer so it can't be easily stolen. Now to convince my comfy wife to join the boondocking Elite. ;)

How do you feel about the height of your setup? I'm debating on whether or not I should get a platform (decked system or pickup vault) vs installing a bed rug and having more head room. On my last trip down to Florida, I met a guy who had this thing called a Topper EZ lift on his pickup. It was pretty cool. It lifts up the entire shell a few feet with a hydraulic lift. He had netting all around to keep the bugs out.

I just got in from throwing some 2x4s and 1/2" ply across in my Canyon's 5'2" bed. I have yet to try some blankets but it's promising that at 6' I can fit diagonally too. I have a soft topper so i'm not as secure as a hard cap, but at a campsite I wouldn't worry about that. I have always wanted to travel out west from the NE without having to pay hundreds for hotels. Going to check out your other videos. Thanks!

I've been looking for ideas and found a couple that will work especially if your with a second person and cannot sleep diagonally. You can spend $350 and get a professional tent end cap that fits over the tailgate called the Nomad. You can also take an old tent and cut the front off . Then you can take velcro strips and line the inside of the shell and tailgate to form a fitting end.

I’m 5’9” so I can fully stretch out in my shell laying diagonally with my sleeping platform. When my wife is with me we end up sleeping long ways with the gate down, and I build a hinged extension that pops up and supports our feet, and then closes the compartment below to hold my surfboards. Built it all for $80. Carpeted too! I’ll Make a video soon to show it off.

I had mine professionally installed, and was told that it is impossible to keep the bed just as dry as the cab, I don't believe that statement, so invest in some marine grade silicone.

LOL and uhh..... significantly more tedious and awkward to maneuver and park and take down gnarly roads? I mean of course it would but thats clearly not this dudes type of setup to be that held back by pulling a trailer around all the time.
@rustymacshackleford6276

A camper shell in addition to a a $10k travel trailer, is what I'm doing. No, it's not awkward at all, if you're a complete idiot who doesn't know how to drive, then I could see the discrepancy.

@turkey4957
@turkey4957 3 года назад
I'm 6' and I can say this video sealed it for me, I'm absolutely getting a 6' when I finally can get a tacoma like this. The little bit of extra length parking/maneuvering wise and slightly longer wheelbase are really non issues unless you're doing the tightest of maneuvering in San Francisco or Manhattan or you are doing only the most hardcore rock crawling off road stuff in which case get a Jeep anyways if you need it to be extremely small wheelbase etc

@OffGridBackcountryAdventures
@OffGridBackcountryAdventures 7 лет назад
Hi Jerrod, I had it installed professionally by the topper company and then I add the single bar over the cab so I could secure my 8 foot awning to the drivers side of my truck. As Bill mentioned, try silicone over the bolts and everything else, hopefully that will stop the leaking issue. Best of luck with everything!
@chrismc.893
@chrismc.893 6 лет назад
Jerrod Bearden I found a roof rack off of a 90’s 4Runner in a junk yard for $13, used tons of silicone and washers, no leaks whatsoever. I also found my roof basket online for about $130 as well. Looks good and it’s solid as a rock!

Do you have a way to pull up the tailgate and close it from inside? I have my truckbed set up with a topper now and camped the other day with a mosquito net and left the topper and tailgate open but I could not figure out how to pull up the heavy tailgate.
@deeannpookie450
@deeannpookie450 7 лет назад
You can hook a strap to the tailgate and pull it up. I know a couple who put a strap all the way around the tailgate and used it to pull it up. And another guy loosened a bolt on the side of his tailgate and put a strap under it then tightened it back down. Personally, I close the tailgate then get in the truck. Just step on the bumper and over you go.
@OffGridBackcountryAdventures
@OffGridBackcountryAdventures 7 лет назад
Hi Donna, I actually sleep with my head towards the tailgate so I can just reach down and pull the tailgate up. The tailgate on my Tacoma is pretty light weight so it's easy to close with one arm.

Yeah, but I wouldn't be able to run all the tight mining trails here in Colorado. Full size trucks are at a disadvantage out here on the 4x4 trails. I want a compact truck and don't mind it at all since I'm a minimalist. Full size trucks would be great for the extra space but I don't want to give up going to certain areas.

Cause it makes so much more sense to work your short life away for a home you are too tired to enjoy or upkeep. Then of course, you can someday retire, and hope you don’t die the first couple of years, like happens to so many. If I could, this is exactly how I’d be living.
