Thanks! I love vintage gear items and having a connection to these items makes them that much more valuable too me. Happy New Year, wishing you the best in 2018!!
Great video, it's VERY cool of you to share your experience and the many lessons learned by being out there. I also want to give you props for speaking clearly and making sure you can be understood, so many folks shoot outdoors and take zero account of the wind. Well done.
Just shared this with my girl, we have a Tacoma and have been planning to take a year off and live out of it when my army life is over. I loved how you went into the tools, you never know when a tool is going to be needed.
i guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me!
@Judson Braylen thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
This was fun to watch. Like opening Christmas presents.....I'm headed for the Sierra Nevada in a week for a month in my 4x4 Explorer. My first solo trip other than trying out everything on a 9 day trip in a regular campground. I sleep in my SUV. Has blackout insulating curtains. Everything has a place and basic set up. Took thought and some months of planning. I loved that water filter you saved for last. I'm headed over to another tab to look that up. Great video!
For your cooler, get a 12v/110v model and keep it up front and you can crarge it right off a cigarette outlet or a 110 if you pull into a campground or a friends driveway. For your fly fishing setup, keep an eye out for Eagle Claw 5 piece rods, they usually come with an aluminum case. The nice thing about that rod is the bottom section can go on one way and it can be used as a fly rod, flip it 180 and you can use it with a baitcaster reel. Quality rod too. I've got 3 or 4 of them and when I was in the Air Force in Alaska and flying out to remote sites, that rod put a lot of trout in my frying pan..
Good schtuff. I have a similar setup but one thing I have is a roll of heavy duty aluminum foil. Also, a mini-hammock (Gear Hammock) which I find useful as a sort of hanging drain for washed dishes to drip dry in. and a cheap plastic bin to wash them in. Thanks!
Thanks for that video. I haven't camped since the 80's, now retired gonna car camp out of my SUV, need to start over again with equipment. That was helpful. I will use your Amazon link when I can as a thank you for the tips.
ive watched several camping videos and I truly enjoy yours, you give a thorough description and what to use items for is helpful to me as well. I have seen in almost all the camping videos where people are having power inverters, some ive even seen with its own fuse box in the back end, I would really appreciate if you would do a video on the power inverters and how to attach them to the truck or suggest where I can find more info or tutorials on how to do that. Thanx
Hey Mary! Will do, I'll start thinking of a video I can do to highlight how I use the inverter. Oh, and sorry for the delayed response as I just now saw your comment. Happy New Year!
Put a cooler inside of another cooler. The space in between the two can be used for other food storage. The ice on the inside cooler will last longer. When 4wd camping we would tie the coolers into place under the vehicles so that the critters couldn't get to them easy.
You and Brian "made my day" with your comment about the Camp Time(r) Roll-a-Table. It has been our baby for 35 years now, and its virtually the same design since 1982...So, when I go to work tomorrow ( Sunday), to fix the machine that makes the side-bars for Roll-a-Table, I'll go to work with a smile on my face. Thank you very much ! CampTimeDave in Spokane Valley WA.
I got a battery from battery plus that’s a combination of starter and deep cell battery that’s around 100 amp hrs. I run my arb frig. (52 qt) off it that’s in my access cab. Seems to work well if you are driving enough . Frig. has low battery shutoff so you don’t drain the battery. Thinking about getting solar and use it to charge the battery also if sitting. Enjoy your videos.
Hey, Thanks for your videos. I am just setting my first truck camper and you have been very helpful. About the surplus shovel. You are right. Those are indestructible. I remember as a kid back in the 70's in California, there were REAL military surplus stores. I would get a shovel, someone would steal it, buy another ect. Regards from Ody Slim
Excellent setup! Love the cast iron setup. I have a skillet but I've been looking to get a dutch oven. Gonna get your setup instead with having the ability of having two pans or using it as an oven. Thanks for the tip, love the channel.
You've given me some great ideas. Thanks. I wish you had mentioned the name brand of the tarp. I couldn't quite make it out when you held it up and I'm looking for some type of tarp system. Thanks again!
You obviously have devoted a great deal of research and though to selecting your gear. Thank for the inspiration. Do you have a video showing how you set up the tarp?
notice you damaged the bin. i am in australia. lots of corrugated rds that smash bins (cars cans and jars) to pieces. i line my bins with cardboard and pack tight. seems to work well. less movement less damage. :)
Some friends and I are heading out on a 3 week trip through co, wy, and mt this Saturday. Your videos are a great help! If you see 2 3rd gen 4runners following you in Buena Vista, it's just me haha. Would be cool to run into you out there
Ever look at USA made canvas tents? Not ultra light but thankfully you have a truck to carry it. I have a kodiak that i haul in my topper truck for camping. Thanks for the vid 👍🏻
Just part way in vid I have a similar set up. I want some 6 volt batteries to run a small freezer. I figure I can make ice or enough ice packs to cool my cooler, that way I'm getting fridge and freezer and only powering one.
Amazing tons of tips out of experience...I really wish you have a website. I watched the video about why you're doing this, I think you can lead the way for other that would like to take the same path.
@@OffGridBackcountryAdventures hope you had a great Christmas in no doubt some stunningly beautiful part of the USA. What a wonderful life for your gorgeous dog!
Wondering if you would do an updated video like this. I see your setup has changed since this video was made so I imagine your load out has changed aswell.
Hi E Patters, that's a great idea. I've not done an update video in a while. I'll get that shot right after all this rain passes. Currently camping outside of Strawberry, AZ. Great terrain around these parts! ~ Brian
Very nice presentation. You explain things very thoroughly without repeating yourself. (That’s a RU-vid pet peeve of mine...”You’ve said that twice already!!”). I’m a new subscriber.
Fantastic video Brian, my wife and I enjoy beach camping on padre island national seashore. Can u do a video on food storage, and your camp shower. Im thinking abour making my own. Also, since we beach camp, whats your opinion on the tent cots out on the market. The reason we're thinking of tent cot is to limit the amount of sand that tracks in. Need some advice bro. Thanks
Hey Albert! Thanks for the comment and I apologize for such a delayed response as I'm just now seeing your questions. To be honest, I don't have too much experience with tent cots. I use a full size cot for my winter camping which I purchased at Cabela's but it's really big and heavy, not ideal for tent camping on the beach. I've heard good things about the Helinox Cot but it's pretty pricey - around $250.00. I apologize for not having more info on those products. I'll do a video on food storage and the camp shower as soon as the weather starts to warm up here in Colorado. Currently it's pretty cold at the cabin so I'm staying indoors this winter and plan to start full time truck camping again by mid Feb or early March. I'll be certain to dial in a video so be on the lookout for it in two months. Have a Happy New Year's Eve, 2018 is going to be a great year!
Your Yoga mat has a 2nd use and that to roll out and put on the ground when you need to work underneath your truck.. Keeps you clean and sharp pointy rocks out of your backside..
Question: how do I really go about all of this? I have 6 months to prepare for this! So I truly need to know the ins and outs of of truck camping. What do I need to know? Please and thank you.
So right, Brian. I can't believe people haul generators, boom boxes, tv's, blue tooth, air conditioners, solar systems, etc. to the camp site. Sheesh. If you have to take all that crap with you just stay home. Less is more.
I disagree.. I don't see anything wrong with having a few comforts, especially if you have someone that is not so outdoorsy that will enjoy the stay a little more, its a balance. My fiancé has a cpap that needs to run 5-6 hours a night as well, I certainly don't see anything wrong with solar....how on earth can that be a bad thing? :0)
Unfortunately, many yeti products are no longer made in the USA, some are, but not all. I suppose the appeal of low labor costs and maximizing profits is the driving force.
Yeah, I've noticed that too. Seems the Rambler drinkware and Hopper coolers are made in China now. Yeti's website says the Tundra coolers are made in the US (Iowa and Wisconsin) and the Philippines. I'm wondering if the parts are made in the Philippines but the cooler assembly is in the US? I just picked up another Yeti Roadie from REI - they lowered the price $50 to $200 which was better than the pelican cooler I was looking at. Overall, I'm very pleased with the Yeti Roadie - good compact size for one person. There are so many awesome coolers out there these days - Pelican, Orca, Cabela's brand, Yeti, Engel, Igloo...the options are endless. Do you have a personal preference? I always like to hear from others about their experience with different coolers.
I am still looking for a cooler that I plan to keep for life, much like you. Right now, I use your basic igloo, it works but its no yeti. I do have yeti cups and rtic cups, in my opionion they are the same, just slightly different lid. I think yeti is as good as it gets for the money. You can see others sell, but they dont sell like the yeti products. yeti has the marketing and popularity going for it, and a quality product to sustain. Cant go wrong with a yeti. Thanks for the videos!
Iv watched a bunch of your vids today and I'm a new subscriber. Im really digging the vids but curious. You've mentioned bear spray in multiple videos but so far I haven't heard any mention of a gun for self defense?
Hey Mr Waynes! Not a dumb question at all, typically I run the engine to charge items with my inverter but you can turn on the inverter without turning on the engine. You'd only want to do that sparingly since it can drain your battery pretty quick. I do it occasionally for 15-20 minute charging sessions - I set an alarm to make sure I remember to go turn my engine on in order to recharge my battery. I made the mistake once of draining my battery using the inverter in the backcountry of Utah's canyon lands....won't make that mistake again!
Hey Kelly, I use the hacksaw to help cutting through any metal or tough plastics that my knives can't get through. For example, I made some modifications to my fender flairs and used the hack saw to trim the areas which weren't needed. I've also used it to cut through pad locks on gates that were illegally closed on Forest Service roads. Sometimes we have misguided people who put up gates on public roads and think they can close off access. The Forest Service has give us approval during our trail maintenance patrols to take these gates down so the hack saw helps expedite that process. Happy New Year and I apologize for such a late reply!
Hi Eric, thanks for watching! Yes, I had some issues when I first got my topper where the topper gate would meet up with the tailgate so I put some rubber molding on the topper gate in order to alleviate the issue I was experiencing. I haven't had any problems with the area you mentioned but was thinking it may have to do with the barrier in-between the topper shell and the bed. I put down a thin rubber layer in-between my topper and truck which seems to do the trick. Best of luck with resolving the issue!
Hi Bryant De La Campa, I now just put my new yeti into the cab of my truck while I'm sleeping. I had the cooler stolen from underneath my truck one evening while I was sleeping during the Memorial Day weekend. Really creeped me out someone would be so brazen. Happy New Year!
Yes, I made a video of a little hack I use to lock the topper from inside. Here is the link if you'd like to check it out...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vEFpwbjgX60.html&t
