The Homeless Firefighter Hey bud, good on you finding early on what really matters in life. 30 yrs EMS/Fire Svc and 35 yrs Military Svc as well. I work the same fire shift you do, so I totally relate to the Sub/Swap concept. I once sub/swapped almost two whole months to $$$ double dip for military leave. As far as the nice nest egg that you have accumulated, please find, watch, like and subscribe to The Crazy Framer. He literally frames up an entire multilevel home by himself. The money you have saved will easily pay in full for a plot of land as well as the material to build a small modest comfortable dwelling. Learn to frame a structure and go from there. You will not have to give up your freedom to roam!!! The thing I learned from our line of work: 911 has enabled us US Americans to be fat sloppy lazy and self absorbed!! (not all of us) But you def know what I'm talking about. I noticed that despite all of the traffic chaos in WW Nam, nobody seemed to be road raging over the road!! I wish you well friend!!!!

God I wish I had a job that provided showers at work.I'd NEVER EVER pay rent or mortgage again. If anyone knows of a relatively inexpensive gym with showers that have warm water, I might consider it still. hahaha I own basically nothing and wouldn't have it any other way. funny, how the US became the US because Europeans killed off the primitive natives, and so many are ditching materialistic bs for what really matters.

I know that this is an older video and I am late to the dance, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention that putting your mattress on a flat piece of plywood will cause it to mold underneath unless you are constantly flipping it. If it's a non flippable mattress, you will still need to flip it and air it out at least once a week. That's what slats and / or box springs do to protect the mattress on the bottom

I’m from Walnut Creek and Modesto CA, but lived in Sacramento for two years before I moved to Saint George, UT. Miss California but don’t miss the rent prices. I had a 650 sq foot apartment that was pretty much 1000 bucks a month as well. Anyways, I’ve been thinking of moving out and travel more myself. Friends and family think it’s weird and they class me as “homeless” but I see a lot of benefits out of it. Especially when I work 3 12s at the hospital.

Hey Sam, I randomly stumbled upon this video and am indeed glad I did. I’m currently a senior in high school as well as an explorer/cadet of almost 4 years for a combined Fire/ALS department outside of Tampa. Last summer, I took a trip to Colorado and Utah and fell in love with the area. In addition to being an explorer, I’ve found a great hobby of doing professional photo work for departments around the country of their apparatus for their websites, annual reports, etc. While in Colorado, I met many members of different departments specifically in the Denver metro and almost immediately got the thought “Man, I wonder if I could ever get on with a department out here, this place is gorgeous!” Fast forward almost three months from being there and I’m still dead set on doing everything I can to get hired out there at a good department. Moving to Colorado from Florida at a young age with career in mind would be a daunting task, especially with most departments out there requiring you to go to Medic school before hire/finish before end of probation. I suppose I could get my Certs in Florida and test for Colorado before moving there, however I have to research what carries over a bit more and make sure that would go smoothly. I know the cost of living out there is sky high (average rent close to/above 1k, lowest average around $800 from what I saw) so, I’ve considered taking my Ford Ranger out there with me and living out of it until I get stable enough to either pay rent comfortably or, as you stated, save up enough to put a down payment on a house. It is relieving to see that someone in the fire service with the unique shift schedule can live comfortably out of their truck, I’d never heard of anyone here in Florida doing this. This type of lifestyle and the changes that come with it would be hard for me to get used to but is something I’ve always wanted to do, whether that be for overland trips or just day to day living in general. Thanks for making this video! Hopefully somebody else in my position will stumble upon it too and find it helpful. Stay safe and keep the faith!
@TheHomelessFirefighter
@TheHomelessFirefighter 6 лет назад
Chris thats awesome you're pursuing fire, its a great and rewarding career. Colorado is a beautiful place, I played rugby there a couple of times in college. The shift schedule definetely allows for this type of lifestyle and im enjoying it so far. Keep me up to date with how the interviews and the whole process im general goes.

I pretty much do a similar set up, I threw a little half side Thule carrier up top and throw a bunch of stuff I don't need access to all that often up top like camp chairs, bbq grill, camp tools, etc. Kinda nice to have a "garage" to keep junk in. Appreciate you sharing!

I may do that as well, but I just dont want to accumulate a whole bunch of stuff. But I guess I can bend my rule. Thanks for watching.

definitely something i'm considering doing, i'm thinking about trading my 05 wrangler for a pickup and doing the same thing might be fun with two dogs though ha. but how does your Toyota do on gas? i'm thinking of a smaller pickup like a ranger just because of the better mpg than id get with a dodge.

Doing it with dogs could be interesting. It doesn't do that good on gas, I think like 16 mpg. Thats the only knock I have on it. I was thinking tacoma but when I laid I the back it was way to small.

Set one up for married men like me to have a free life like his. Nomadics are system breakers. I would do anything to start all over again and do it right. Been married 20 years and went on two vacations. That's literally house arrest.

No cooler, no stove, no water, food. No generator, inverter/converter, solar. Just a bed and drawers.

I'll be making an updated build video soon. I will show those things, but no I dont have a generator or solar. Use the place primarily to rest my little head.

Don’t you worry about carbon dioxide buildup while sleeping in a windowless truck bed? Think about how small you truck bed is and the available air space. I’d bet after 6hrs of sleeping, you must sense the stuffyness and at 8+ hours, your losing brain cells and 10+hrs you may not wake up...

I always keep the windows cracked at least 3 inches...no matter how cold or hot it is. But, even if I didn't, there's enough natural air cracks to breath (truck shells aren't perfectly sealed).
