It is not normally in the industry. I worked for a company that prided itself that way and now it advertises that if you’re paid that way you are being cheated. Go figure! You have to ask your recruiter does your company pay all your employees for 50 minutes of every hour? These companies pray upon the new and inexperienced and even though they are worn before they get in the industry they have to learn on their own. This is what it’s going to become of the trucking industry for dominantly new and inexperienced for a year or two and then they will move on.

Best way to deal with low pay that I've found is to get yourself out of debt and sit home half the week. Run half and then be home half. This is best way to level the playing field. If they refuse to pay then you stay home until they do. Fair is fair.

One day it took me over eight hours from NYK in Long Beach to go ninety miles to the Flying J in Frazier Park. I made a whopping $23 for that mess. And my service team leader was still upset with me that my Target load wasn't going to get to Woodland on time because I ran out of hours after being stuck in the Hell of the 405 and 5 for what seemed like an eternity.

I would like to see a combination of mileage pay + hourly pay. That way drivers have incentive to make miles, and are compensated for delays, etc. Straight hourly pay leads to too many people milking the clock.

I have been in short-haul working for a beverage distributor hauling our own product. Our route drivers get paid by the day, plus per stop and by the load. I worked 52 to 58 hours per week and was two-wheeling heavy loads into stores, etc., with up to 20 stops a day. I recently took a line haul job with my same company with hourly pay. One stop a night with 400 miles of driving. A bit less money and I work 9pm to about 6am, but lots less work with zero traffic. I am guaranteed a minimum of 40 hours pay [typically put in 37 to 40 hours] and I get time & a half if I need to go over 40 for some reason [weather, breakdown, etc.]. I could not be happier AND got a 2020 Freightliner tractor!
