Today we meet Jim, who is just about to retire and hit the road. He’s a minimalist who want to travel light, cheaply and with as few restrictions as possible. To accomplish that he has chosen to live in a Ford F-150 with a tall shell because it will give him the best possible fuel mileage in his pickup. A tall shell that mounts to the side of the bed-walls gives him an adequate amount of comfort, actually improved his MPG and gives him stealth and freedom.

This guy has a great attitude. "I'm really excited". I lived in the back of my truck for close to two years. No set up. Just a stealthy camper shell. It actually wasn't that bad.

I went full time in my truck right around the time your video came out. I'm 60 years old and don't see myself ever moving back into sticks and bricks again. This life has forced me to be an innovator, an engineer, and a problem solver which I have grown to love. Currently spending winter in Arizona with travel plans for the coming year.

I lived in my 1948 Kit Companion camper for a year in the nw. For heat in the winter I wore lots of warm clothes had down comforters and wool blankets. Wore a knitted hat And ate out a pot of water to start boiling for oatmeal in the morning. Coldest I slept was 16*. Starting the stove and water boiling it was 65* within 15 minutes. And boom breakfast was quick. I took the doors off cabinets to help coping with dampness. Never had an issue either. Before that my mom and sister and I lived in a tent in Florida for a year at a campground with a large pool. Can we even imagine living in a dugout like the pioneers? Perspective.

I love it! very nice build, great problem solving! I love the library, that's a new one for me and it's brilliant! The sliding window so he can get into the cab and vice versa, that would be essential for me. I've thought about some kind of truck/camper/shell setup, and being able to slip into the cab without having to go outside would be a non-negotiable for me. The heater is brilliant too. So simple. I need to find one of those. Jim has a winning personality and I love his passion and excitement for what he's doing. As a fellow ultralight hiker I'm super impressed that he's gotten his pack weight down to 10-11 pounds! Wow.Great interview and build!

Get a hospital bedside commode from the Goodwill and put a separator in to separate the urine which can be diluted 10 to 1 with water then water and fertilize a plant with it. Use pine shavings for solid waste, just keep it covered, a little urine wont hurt. Use pine shavings intended for horse stalls or other animal cages. The resin in the pine shavings prevents any smells. Stir it with a stick periodically to help break down the waste. Wrap it in bags and place in dumpsters or bury it in the woods once a week. Or take it home and fertilize your flower beds, but not food gardens. I've used this method for years.

What a well thought out build, it is freedom when you think backwards , he satisfys questions by asking them backwards, that is a cool attitude, going backs to basics, Would it work for everyone maybe not. Outdoor people get this lifestyle. You travel to see, walk , hike and do , not to be confined to an indoor space. Frame of mind is everything. The question most people avoid is What do i need to be happy , not what i want to be happy. Love the high windows and the escape route, in this day and time is has become more essential.

A different build out for sure. For me, I'd like to have a pop-up on the top to be able to stand up when I want to. But it suits Jim. Also, it would've been nice to have a photo shot from the doorway looking in to get a better idea of what the camper looked like. jmo Would like to see a follow-up sometime to see the changes he makes and his cargo trailer build.

Love this design! I've been looking at cap campers, and so many are short bed trucks, I have 8' bed, so glad to see how you arranged it. The high up windows are so much more functional than the low down ones. The side to side bed is what I like too. Clean and modular. Love the shelf and the access to the truck is something I hadn't considered, especially being able to reach into the back seat (I have a quad cab) and leave it open to air condition/preheat the back before entering. Put a autostart on my diesel truck and might be a way to wake up and start the truck up to heat the camper, without leaving the sleeping bag.

I just seen this today Nov.18, 2023. This is fantastic built. I have been thinking about what I want. I have a 4x4 PU now. Thinking on getting newer truck as mine has 193 K miles and starting to rust, It's a Ford F-150 King Ranch 2005. Maybe I will go with a new motor as I am getting older also, lol 70's. then the truck will go well beyond my lifetime without trouble hopefully. The 5x8 trailer is something I also thought about so I can bring my tools, all my different table saws, drills etc. Maybe pick up a little bit of work or help someone. Well I have said to much already. The video Jim made was excellent, think I will watch it again. Thanks Jim and Bob.

I've recently retired and as soon as my condo sells i'm transitioning into van life. I'm very excited about being free again and I'm sure my eyes will be lit up just like Jim's. Beautiful little/big build he has going. For the first time in my life I regret being 6 foot five :/. I've considered a box truck but, like Jim, I need to be able to get into the more remote places, so 4x4 and low profile is my goal. So many things I like about this build but It's just too narrow. I'd have to go lengthwise with my bed. I will be talking to the folks at Bel-Air that's for certain. Thanks for the upload Bob and may the nomad angel smile down on both you, Jim and every nomad out there in the world. Peace 8)

They all do. The ones that are thought out and being used by people who are living their dream. No two are the same. Just like people

This is wonderful & well thought out. Attractive rig. Nice man! Wishing you happy travels. Please gift someone the Buddy Heater😊 if you won't need it. Your heat solution is a good idea for your space. Thanks for another great video, Bob.

Lauri, The heater started malfunctioning. Lucky I noticed because it later caught on fire. I no longer trust the safety of those heaters unless you are watching it.
