I too suffer from Acute Panic. On the day of My Heavy Truck Licence Test, I had just begun the normal driving component, not yet at the difficult or complex stuff when a young boy unexpectedly stepped out in front of Me. As far as My Examining Officer was concerned, the boy was dead or critically injured because there was no way a Student Driver could possibly not plow over him. But I stopped the Truck without even Hitting him. The Examining Officer had to drive the Truck back to the Testing Centre because I couldn’t, I was in such a state of shock. When My Driving Instructor began questioning what had happened, how I had Failed and when could I do the Test again, the Examining Officer informed him of what had happened and that regardless of My ability or not, to do other stuff Required by Law, I had Passed because I hadn’t Hit the Boy. For the next 25 Years I not only drove Heavy Trucks, but Heavy Emergency Service Vehicles, (think Flashing Lights and Sirens ) Heavy Military Transports (as an Officer of the Crown) and a 1938 London Double Decker Bus (for which at the time I was not Licensed to drive, but under heavy Police Escort - 8 Police Motorcycles and 12 Police Officers aboard - later the Police issued Me a Driving Licence for Articulated Double Decker Buses based solely on My Willingness to drive that Bus for them).

Seriously impressed with the “this is not easy” reverse down a ramp!

Another fantastic video, I love watching your videos. Great advice for new drivers. I am a new driver myself and i do panic a lot also which just adds additional stress tot he job. I am trying hard to get over it and the one thing i have learned is never be afraid to ask. 99% of experienced drivers will help as you say they have all been there before. Keep the videos coming

Great advice for new or any driver ... Don't panic ask for help...and If you're unsure ask.. always enjoy the videos.. shows how truck driving really is and how hard they work..

Brilliant video Ned one of your best I think, fair play to you for taking about when you just started and when you panic in certain situations I can relate I got my class 1 two years ago now drove for 3 weeks then I packed it in because of panic and I regret it every day since. Ned i can totally relate to your tips for new drivers as a new driver myself i know how easy it to panic when the proverbial shit starts to hit the fan, On a few occasions ive found myself in a tight spot but ive taken a second to evaluate the situation and calmly solved the problem. Keep up the good work :)

That was very good advice you gave about making sure you have to correct information and to Ask if you are not sure. We have all been there and done that,- drove off with the wrong trailer or gone to the wrong place! Those airlines do tend to fracture just at the end near the brass fitting under the spring.

I have always said: The Only Dum Question is, The Question I Do Not Ask!!

Ned: Your ABSOLUTELY correct...DON'T PANIC! I was going cross country driving a rental truck towing a car trailer. I pulled into a motel with only one way in & out, parking spaces on both sides full, & pouring rain at night. Not accustomed to backing out a trailer rand not being able to see because of the down pour, I knew I was toast. Lo & behold I hear a gentleman say he was a trucker & would back me out. He took the wheel and after several attempts because of the conditions it succeeded. I told him he was a Angel sent for me and offered him money for a dinner, which he refused to take. I'll never forget that man! All because I didn't panic!

Totally agree with everything you say about staying calm. I’ve seen it many times where cocky drivers mock others who are new. Had it done to me when I started driving in the mid 80s. Great advice I received is take your time and ignore others, get out and look if you need to. Laugh it off because when you watch other drivers no matter how experienced they will make mistakes. Mistakes also cost lives when you become complacent. Stay safe Ned

Just watched this video and it brought back memories when you were describing what it was like trying to back up the ramp on the P&O Dublin to Liverpool it wouldn’t have been that bad if it was straight in but to the port /left side of the rear door and the mirrors were practically useless trying to back up that ramp ‘twas some achievement to get it done in one go.

Another great video Ned 👍 with all due respect I know exactly how you feel but stay in the cab Ned there are some scum bags out there on the roads and your safety is paramount ✅ I agree the standard of driving in this country is deplorable and there is very little common courtesy on our roads, if some cuts me up I have given up getting angry with them as it gets me into bad form and I prefer to keep my piece of mind ✅ lovely sound off that V8 - Turbo is whistling away nicely !!

Used to do multi drop up north and down south. Comming up out of the docks and along the Liffey was like Dicing with death some mornings after comming off the ferry. It was like wacky races.

My first ever hgv drive was for Marks and Spencer and I was driving a vehicle with a Eaton twin spliter gearbox, absolute nightmare, got to my first delivery milk, yogurt, cream, came pouring out when I opened the back doors. So I blamed the warehouses boys as you do.
